Feb. 1981 I called the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 2AM and was told to call back later; the janitor said everyone had gone home for the night. LOL! I'm still here....
Bob Newhart wasn't just a comedian; he was a beacon of joy and wit in our lives. His humor transcended generations, bringing families together around the TV. Every laugh, every smile, was a gift from him to us. RIP to a legend who showed us that clean, clever comedy could touch hearts and change lives. We'll never see another like him. 💔 😞
There are few comedians that are funny, but they cuss way too much. Now I'm not afraid of a few cuss words now and then but every 5th word or so is too much for me.
A few years back, my wife and I saw Mr. Newhart perform at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Conn. Besides his amazing comedy, a really nice touch was that there was a band of local musicians onstage, who performed the themes to both classic Newhart series. They opened the show with Lorenzo Music's "The Bob Newhart Show" theme (the Chicago series), and when Mr. Newhart was done with his set, they performed Henry Mancini's theme for "Newhart" (the Vermont series). All in all, it was one of the most enjoyable evenings we've ever spent. I have no problem with over-the-top, in-your-face comedy, but there's something special about a person who can be as subtle and understated as Mr. Newhart was, and yet still slay the sold-out house. He could convey more with a simple facial gesture or shoulder shrug than a lot of people could could in a full-on 10-minute rant. RIP, Mr. Newhart. You were one of the best ever, and I'm so grateful that you left us with such a wealth of wonderful memories.
In the sixties, when I was a child watching TV shows with the family (one TV in the house), we were all happy when we heard Bob Newhart was going to be on, usually a variety show, because we knew he would make us all laugh. Thank you, Bob Newhart, for all the great memories.
When I heard of Bob's passing away the other day I felt real sorrow and a true loss. "The Bob Newhart Show" is my 2nd favorite Sitcom of all time. RIP Mr. Newhart
Bob Newhart. The man was an absolute genius. This skit proves it. One sided convos are hard enough to do, never mind doing multiple ones like he's doing here. The man was so smooth, intelligent, and yet so low-key that sometimes what he says just blows right by you. Marvelous, and proof that you can do humor clean as a whistle.
I'm here because it's July 18, 2024, and I see others are as well. I've never seen this one before, just checking out other Newhart stuff I've never seen as well as my favorite bits.
I was a bit depressed when I started viewing Bob Newhart in action. Thanks to his everyman routine, I feel much better. Comedy that lifts and reassures the spirit.;)
I used to sit in my bedroom and listen to him for hours. I loved his comedy. I was a big fan of both of his TV shows. God grant your soul Rest, Mr Newhart
Bob Newhart reminds me of my grandparents and spending time with them as a child. I guess it’s because whenever his show was on, it was when I was always pending the night with them. Their television stayed on CBS which is right along with their generation at the time. Life was simple, safe, sweet and secure. Thank you, Mr. Newhart. Well done, sir.
They put a warning on this RUclips site for Bob Newhart! I understand, laughter might breakout. The atheist hotline is the same number as the prayer hotline except no one answers. That, boys and girls, is very funny.
Before my time but loved every second of this. I always enjoyed how much prime time tv got away with back then. In the original "Bob Newhart Show" during the episode where Bob is held hostage in his office, Carol orders food for everyone. Jerry (the dentist) is upset because he has a hot date with two flight attendants but Carol is pleading with him to stay. She offers him some food from a bucket of chicken and Jerry says, "Give me a pair of thighs." As primary school kid, even I laughed out loud at that one. Thank you for reminding us of how lucky we were to have him in our lives.
I saw this routine updated a few years ago. It's pretty timeless though he had updated the Agnew joke to "Oh, you can't get a hold of President Reagan? Well, keep trying Mr. Bush." I remember as a kid watching his Chicago-set show, the episode where Bob Newhart, Peter Bonerz and Bill Daily spent a drunken weekend (Emily was away) trying to say "Moo Goo Gai Pan" into a phone 23 times. That was literally the funniest routine I'd seen ever.
There never was and never will be another Bob Newhart. I just loved him from the first time I saw him in black and white tv on the Ed Sullivan Show. He is sorely missed.❤😊
A few days ago we had a tornado sighting and very severe thunderstorms in our part of the Midwest and lost power for a few days. When I learned that Bob Newhart had just died I realized it was just God laughing it up with Bob. R.I.P. Bob
What a comedic genius... the RUclips asked me if I wanted to proceed because it had a theme of self-harm. You know back in the day that this aired there was no concern about that because WE ALL FREAKING UNDERSTOOD that it was a show and that this was a bit for comedic effect... we don't need to be coddled and given inane explanations... unless society has really sank to a whole new low.
Another icon of childhood gone. Bob was such an even keeled, clean, dead pan delivery comic. He remained just under super stardom. Not that he wasn't worthy of that, but his humility transcended the Hollywood elitism of today. He was a pure entertainer.
I only just learned that he passed. A sad loss. I remember listening to his one-sided phone calls back in the '70s. Every one of them was hilarious. His appearances on the Big Bang Theory showed he still had it decades later. I'd never seen this before, so thank you for posting it.
Love the princess phone. By the way, the overheard phone call was Bob's game all his life, that's why the Newhart show had him as a psychologist, so he could be on the phone all the time.
Bob's one way phone calls were a huge inspiration for me when I had a radio show. My idiot cat George, supposedly produced the show. He didn't have a mic, as there was a big attack on air, when he was cyberdating one of the backup singers for the Jingle Cats and I wouldn't play the tape. From there on out, George was a staple to the show, and I had these one way conversations with him. Good stuff, Bob! You will be missed.
RIP! Alas poor Bob I knew him well.😢 where are your jokes now? The old guys were a different breed. It was a kind of humour that they don't do today. You couldn't do this gag today anyway, because everyone has a mobile phone now, and no one calls anyone😅
Being a Brit, I found that US humour didn’t travel well across the pond. Way back in the early 1960s my friend bought Bob Newhart records. Although as I said US humour didn’t travel well. Bob’s sketches were the exception. Although extremely funny, they soon became so familiar we could recite them word for word. I still give a titter whenever I hear them and reminisce of those days 60+ years ago. However Newhart had brilliantly controlled timing with his narrative. However this particular sketch is new to me. Thanks for posting. I really enjoyed it. So funny.

I was sad to hear the news today that Bob Newheart had passed away. He was of an older generation than me but I still remember growing up and seeing him on T.V when I was a kid. It was clean humour but was also sometimes tongue in cheek. His ability to create conversations with imaginary people was very clever and also very funny. The driving instructor is one that I remember well. God bless you Bob, you will be missed. RIP.

He and Bill Cosby made the funniest albums!!

Man was a Genius, One sided phone conversations are very difficult and he did them better than anyone. There's a great show in Heaven tonight.
Litterally. Humor requires great intelligence.
*But there's no heaven so no one's going to see it.*
I won't take anything from him, but he almost certainly borrowed the routine from Shelley Berman.

I can't believe how I have never seen this before! I used to watch him on Nick at Night.

I liked all of Bob Newhart shows, and he was a great comedian. I offer his family my condolences.
Bob was great!
"This is my brother Darrell and my other brother Darrell". 😂
His 3rd show (I think?), where he had a wife and daughter was fun as well. I don't remember it all that well, but I remember liking it.
