    When purchasing a new in-ground swimming pool, you need to determine what size pool pump is required. There is tendency to purchase a bigger pump than is necessary thinking bigger is best. However, not only does this lead to higher operating costs, but you may also be overpowering your filter system. As a general rule you should have a pump that filters all the water in a pool in an 8 hour period. This page will show you how to select a pump that filters all the water in your pool in 8 hours.

    In regards to the feet of head calculation, do I subtract the feet of head number directly from a pump's GPM to determine if the pump is suitable, or do I take a fraction of the feet of head and then subtract that from the pump's GPM? I am wondering if this holds true for all pumps, or if every pump is affected differently by the feet of head calculation. I have not been able to find one person who can answer this question. My pump's GPM is too high for my filter. My electric bill is extremely high when I run the pump, so I need to find an appropriately sized pump. My filter's GPM is 44. My feet of head calculation is roughly 28. Thank you.

    What size the pipes(Water inlet and outlet) do people often use in the United States? 1.5" or 2"? Who can help me answer my question, I am very grateful.

    Great video. In it you talked about having 12” of straight pipe on the suction side where it entered the pump to act as a reservoir keeping the pump cooler. The video showed that part as a bigger piece of pipe. Did i interpret that part of the video wrong or can that 12” straight pipe into the pump be the same size as the rest of the plumbing?

    My pool is 6m3, my pump is 14m3/h and my sand filter is 6m3/h. so the flow rate is 6m3/h? Or the pump can push beyond the filter's design flow?
    It works for years but i guess its overkill?

    When you say 2" plumbing, does it matter if the fitting is 1.5"? For example my dedicated vacuum line is 2" but the end fitting is only 1.5"

    Hi , Just subbed by the way , great description . My plumber paired a filter with a 336 LPM capacity with a pump the flows at 350 LPM . (92.5 US Gallons ) I am a bit a bit annoyed at the fact he didnt up my filter size . In your opinion is this close enough or is my filter compromised . Cheers in advanced.

    • @Inyopools
      @Inyopools  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Ben, thanks for subscribing :) The fact that your filter flow rate is lower than your pump output could definitely lead to problems down the road. Do you have a single speed or variable speed pump? If you have a variable speed it's possible to run it at a lower RPM which will reduce your LPM. If you have a single speed pump, you may be able to replace your impeller with a smaller size, which will also reduce your LPM. Feel free to comment with your equipment make and models and we can try and point you in the right direction.

    • @ben-vf
      @ben-vf 5 лет назад

      Inyo Pools, I really appreciate your reply . Unfortunately it is a single speed pump , Zodiac FloPro WFHPM15 . The sand filter is a Zodiac ZT700B (max 336LPM) . I am pretty sure I am being generous In allowing a 10 meter head for the pump . The performance chart for this model at 10 shows a flow of 350 LPM. I like your idea of maybe changing the impeller size . This is something I will definitely look into. The pool is only about 38000L and its turning over about 21000L an hour. There is an inline gate valve before the pump as it sits slightly below water level. It would be great if I could just close the valve a bit but I am pretty sure you would call that a NO NO :D I wish I had educated myself to some extent and found your channel a lot sooner.

      It is always to have a slightly higher flow rate higher on your filter than what your pool pump is putting out other wise you putting a strain on your pool pump is out & also strain on your pool filter I'm buying a single speed pool pump that has also 350 litres per minute & the new sand pool filter has a flow rate of 360 litres per minute which will go perfect with the pool pump & instead of sand in the filter I will have glass media which is better than sand always have a higher flow rate higher on your pool filter than what your pool pump is putting out & won't have any problems hope that's helped you out

    Hello, how can I calculate the HP of the pump if I have solar heaters that are 30ft on the roof of the house?, or should I use a second pump for this propose ?

    • @Inyopools
      @Inyopools  10 месяцев назад +1

      The HP is dependent on a lot of other factors. First, what pump model are you going to use? Different pumps have different flow rates; a Hayward Super II pushes more water than a Hayward Super Pump. A Pentair SuperFlo has a lower flow rate than a Pentair Whisperflo.
      Second, what is your pool's plumbing's feet of head? The top-end flow rate of your pump is affected by the length and rise the pump has to overcome to pull water from the pool basin. The higher the feet of head, the higher the pump grade and the higher the HP needed. For example, the Pentair Challenger High Flow and High Pressure, the high flow version, is best for pumps with a FoH of lower than 50-60 feet, whereas the High-Pressure version is used for systems with a feet of head of 60 or more.

      @@Inyopools thank you very much for your answer, actually my pool is 30 thousand liters capacity, according with my calculations with a 3/4hp pump is more than enough, however if I add the heaters those heaters are 26ft height, that's why I don't know if I use the same pump rehabs I have to modify the filters capacity, pressure, etc, or if I add a new pump just for the heaters the rest remains as it is, what do you think?

    Hi, how much head loss would a filter sock add? Thankyou

    • @Inyopools
      @Inyopools  6 лет назад

      Mike, there are so many variables that affect feet of head so it's almost impossible to say anything with certainty. I would imagine if you kept it clean it would have a minuscule effect on your water flow. A lot of pool owners use a skimmer sock to pick up smaller debris without any problems.

    How hot should the motor housing get?

    • @Inyopools
      @Inyopools  6 лет назад +2

      We get this question a lot. Temperatures as low as 115 degrees F are hot to touch, and too hot to keep your hand on. Some motors may run much hotter than that on the shell, and be normal. One of the long time rules was to keep the bearing temperatures under 200 degrees F. The biggest percentage of the pool motors have Class B insulation, with overload protectors which trip at approximately 256 degrees F. This would be the temperature of the winding, at the hottest point. The temperature of the motor shell depends upon the temperature of the winding, the shape of the stator, and the air flow through the motor.
