Im a flight attendant in the Air Force and i must thank you for giving me so many ideas to bring to work && shoot, even at home! Your my favorite chef youtube and TV wide :) thanks for everything!
Just tried this. Can't get cinnamon schnapps in wayne county nc and this is awesome, One suggestion from my daughter, if you freeze the redhots first, they will break easier.
I use fire Jolly Ranchers and I don't have to crush them or strain after a few hours it totally dissolves. I also made it with other flavors and they all came out great.
Red Hots are also awesome in apple cider!! We never broke them up, just toss into a giant bottle of apple juice and let it sit around for a while. It will all eventually dissolve. For a tasty autumn or winter drink, just heat it up gently.
we do this around here with all kinds of candy , Halls is an awesome substitute for the Red Hots, but we blits the candy with a bit of the alcohol already , make it easier to blend and dissolve
You can just put the candies in the vodka bottle, screw the cap on and put it in your dishwasher. The heat from the washer dissolves the candy and infuses the vodka with flavor. I've made chili vodka and some swedish fish vodka using that technique
I don't see why not! You can infuse vodka with just about anything. If it doesn't dissolve immediately, let it sit for a few days in a cool, dark place and shake it up every twelve hours or so and the flavors will extract. I made a coffee vodka a couple years ago using some whole coffee beans that I'd cracked slightly between two spoons that was pretty incredible. There's plenty of information on vodka infusions online; just Google it. :)
In the Nordic countries we mix a candy called Tyrkisk Peber (Turkish Pepper) with vodka using the same method in this video. It's has a spicy salty liquorice flavor instead of the cinnamon of red hot. Not as suitable as red hot for valentines but it is very delicious.
i dont know if red hots are actully hot but this reminds me of a russian vodka recipie called hrenavuha. basicly. you take horseradish, grind it, put it in a bottle of vodka with a couple of spoons of honey and let it rest for a day or two. if you ever had horseradish you know the havok it can cause. so its a nice touch after you get the kick from the alcohol. to get kicked again by the horsereddish.
Chef John, I believe candy vodka was invented by the finns in the late 70's! Especially our signature "salty" liquorice candy, salmiac, is used to flavor vodka. Allegedly the idea came from a finnish singer Jari Sillanpää who experimented with different candies while working as as a bartender on a cruise ship in the 80's. Another story tells that even before that the finnish youth used candy (esp. salmiac) to make vodka taste better.
I found out that you can skip over the mashing and processing the candy. After pouring out some of the vodka into another container, for displacement purposes, I put the candies directly into the vodka bottle, poured the vodka that I had put aside back into the bottle, you will have a little vodka left over, let it sit over night on the counter top. The next morning it was ready and tasting fantastic!!! Sometimes chefs make things too complicated :-)
OMG Thankyou - personally (being a muslim myself) i really dont care y other's are complaining, i mean i'd make this with carbonated water and a litlle sugar and Boom! u have the same thing - alcohol free :D regardless i do like the idea :)
I know coffee flavors are pretty strong, (my mother used to put re-freezable plastic ice cubes in her coffee and they tasted of coffee ever after)---but why not use a coffee grinder for powdering the candies?
For those who can't get red hots: The candy is just cinnamon extract, sugar, and food dye. All ingredients you can get at a grocery store. Just play with the proportions.
Chef John! You've already given us so much, but would you be willing to give us a downloadable version of your label? Or maybe just the font that you used?
i had a dream last night that chef john did a spinoff series of MST3K, and in the middle of the movies he'd do a cooking show, and we'd all get to eat what he made during the second half of the movie. i'm just sayin', yknow, that would be really cool. we love you chef john!
Chef John, would this method work with atomic fireballs, or do you think the sweetness of the center would over power the spicy coating. (I've never had red hots, they might taste exactly the same as fireballs, but I don't think they have the sweet center) Thanks
Where did you get the bottle from? There are dozens of things I could do with such a bottle and being I make chainmaille, well it goes with the entire theme of what I do.
You can use Jolly Ranchers following the same directions below, no straining needed. I separated the colors for aesthetic purposes, as well as taste. Beautiful cocktails that mix very nicely with 7-up or sprite

Haha the "I'm gonna taste and adjust for seasoning" totally flew over my head. I was just like "oh yes of course.. cayenne pepper"
big fan of the ooooool' smasha smasha.
You don't get too many recipes for "bottom shelf" liquor, so thank you Chef!
Your sense of humor is great
Chef John, you are the best!
we do this around here with all kinds of candy , Halls is an awesome substitute for the Red Hots, but we blits the candy with a bit of the alcohol already , make it easier to blend and dissolve
Holy crap.
That is such a great idea. Love Vodka, love cinnamon.
You are amazing.
I love your sense of humour!
Matches well with the chocolates, roses and card from the local supermarket most V-day's consist of.
wow thank you for sharing this recipe. So awesome Mercedes

i love flavored vodkas, cant wait to try it!
Thanks, but my singing is more for making babies than birthing them. ;)
Not as harmful as living life afraid of a millionth of a gram of red dye. ;)
What a cute and nice little bottle!!
Creative use of the candies :) Maybe I'll try it with soda water or something since I don't drink.

This looks like a terrific idea.
Happy Valentine's Day to you! I love your videos Chef! You are too funny!
Your glass goblets are beautiful
So cool so good making these as gifts for my sons teachers God knows they need it lol
This works with Warheads candy so well
Chef John needs to sing in EVERY episode.

Good stuff, Chef John you strike again!

So simple so brilliant !!
WOW you sing too!!! your amazing!
Chef John is getting to get "Very" lucky on Valentines Day with this Red-Hot-Hooch!
I love the cadence of your voice.
Love the singing!
I found out that you can skip over the mashing and processing the candy. I loved the warning label :D
OOOhhhh YES YES YES all cayenne recipe week!
Such an awesome gift idea! ♥
This looks like a LOT of fun! Can't wait to give it a try :)
OMG Thankyou - personally (being a muslim myself) i really dont care y other's are complaining, i mean i'd make this with carbonated water and a litlle sugar and Boom! u have the same thing - alcohol free :D regardless i do like the idea :)
More recipes like these please!!!!
Yes! The warning label made the drink!
that could maybe work! You'd just have to use a lot because red hots have really strong cinnamon flavor.
Crystal d'Arcques stemware for the win!
I know coffee flavors are pretty strong, (my mother used to put re-freezable plastic ice cubes in her coffee and they tasted of coffee ever after)---but why not use a coffee grinder for powdering the candies?
fabulous idea!
Google "Skittles Vodka". :3 skittles, jolly ranchers...basically any hard candy works best but it's the same base recipe.
this looks cool, I love red hots
You are simply the best x
Fishermen's friends and Salty liquorice goes well this way too!
Chef John, can you use Skittles (separate colors) for a sweet type of drink? Same recipe?
you can order Red Hots from a site called American Fizz.. their shipping cost is really low for Europe. i order from them at least once in two months
XD! I love your warning label on the bottle!
You are so funny! Love your warning on the label.
You can do this with skittles as well. Separate the colours into different bottles and you end up with a rainbow of fruity vodka :)
For those who can't get red hots: The candy is just cinnamon extract, sugar, and food dye. All ingredients you can get at a grocery store. Just play with the proportions.
Very beautiful loved it. But where did u get the bottle from?..
Chef John! You've already given us so much, but would you be willing to give us a downloadable version of your label? Or maybe just the font that you used?
As you should.
So easy!! The 'disclaimer' is clever:)
I love red hots. I buy them at the dollar store. I have not seen them for any where else.
This looks like way too much fun to make.
I cooked apple slices in red hots for 4 hour (with a whole.clove) the added the vodka and canned it
I spot the usage of Chicago typeface in the label! Timeless! Chef John an old school Apple user?
i had a dream last night that chef john did a spinoff series of MST3K, and in the middle of the movies he'd do a cooking show, and we'd all get to eat what he made during the second half of the movie. i'm just sayin', yknow, that would be really cool. we love you chef john!

Love Potion #9 is a truly great song! The Searches version is good, but the (original soul) version is GREAT!
Oh no! I wish you would have published this yesterday, so that I could make it for my valentine :( thanks for the great recipe though :)
Apple juice! But it will take longer to dissolve. Best heated and poured into a nice mug. :D
Sorry Chef John, I become so stupefied by your majestic ways that I forget to press like.
That's why I came back...and for the singing too...
Thanks for the laugh. Love your videos.
Would this work equally as good with gelatin hearts or milkchokolate?
I replayed the part you were singing. Haha awesome Chef John!
You can use Jolly Ranchers following the same directions below, no straining needed. I separated the colors for aesthetic purposes, as well as taste. Beautiful cocktails that mix very nicely with 7-up or sprite
Not the dreaded Red Dye # 9! I'll risk it ...for LOVE!
Red hot idea Chef John🍸😍
Actually it was "Candy is Dandy, but Liqueur is quicker". ;)
Love potion #9! Great song and Sandra Bullocks break out movie too. :)
You out done yourself!
Most cinnamon candies should do the job. You don't necessarily need name-brand to make it work. :)
pretty bottle! :)
-lainey
Brach's Cinnamon Imperials?
But you can get the imperials and red hots on Amazon.com. Don't they ship internationally?
I would not mind more drink recipes.
Love the label. That was too funny.
where did you get that bottle?
now I know what to get as a gift for my american guests when they come to Poland :)
Great idea! I'm going to try it :D thanks!
no problem!
Pure awesome, Chef! I need a drinking buddy!
Woaah! I have same wine glass as yours! :)
use Skittles, skittles Vodka is awesome :)
Where can I get the bottles? Cause its sooo cute and I want them! Lol
i wonder if it would be tasty using whip cream vodka :)
Chef John, you are my valentine this year :)
