Paul has been one of the rare singers with the right rhythm both in his voice and in his body, so his live performances have always been passionate but also elegant. Paul for ever!

That intro is so hauntingly beautiful and twisted.
I came for a nice 80's songs but I didn't know that he was this good live!! I discovered a true musician.
Paul young & The Royal Family lost something when Kim & Maz left in 1984, they were integral to the whole sound. They did appear on Playhouse & Standing on the Edge on the Association Album, them two tracks being perhaps the best two on the album.

They were replaced with three male singers, two of whom - Jimmy Chambers and George Chandler - later formed Londonbeat, responsible for the US No. 1 and UK No. 2 "I've Been Thinking About You".
Interesting how this song evolved to the 'live at the Tube' performance a few years later.
The two girls were gone...replaced by the guys...Pino detuned his low E string to a D to get that deep low end and is slapping and popping and sliding everywhere.
I miss the girls but the later performance seems more confident and polished.
Hm? I think the 3 male vocalists brought a Motown vibe and stepped up the whole band's sound. No disrespect to the ladies.
At the 1:55 mark, that background singing by the short-hair girl can give you cold chills. It is so other-worldly.

On the formation of The Royal Family, Paul recalls:
“[Q-Tips manager Ged Doherty] went to three or four record labels and most of them were saying that they would have me alone. He knew I’d been working on some stuff with Ian [Kewley, aka Rev, keyboard player with Q-Tips] that the others were not so keen on. So he suggested it was time I tried something different.”
“One of the first ideas we had was to get the girls do some answering parts on ‘Love Of The Common People’. Maz [Marilyn Roberts of the Fabulous Wealthy Tarts with Kim Lesley] was going out with Pino [Palladino, fretless bass guitarist extraordinaire] and he was fortunately up for anything. We immediately thought that ‘Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)’ would be a great one for Pino, too.”
"We got Steve Bolton on guitar, a very unorthodox player. He played like Adrian Belew with a lot of feedback control and then he could funk like a mutha. Mark Pinder was a very four-on-the-floor drummer. We had all this weird stuff going on."
The great artists are the ones that sound as good live as Memorex. I LOVE this song. It has an awesome tune and sound. I can't tell which part I like best, Paul himself or the two ladies singing backup. The two singing backup have a pretty unique and haunting sound that really adds to the overall feel of the song. Super great.

Paul Young was a great vocalist back in the day. Sadly mother time has not been kind to him and his singing voice is a pale shadow of what it was. Where ever i lay my hat was a brilliant vocal performance
he gave it all and it take's it toll. I still respect him, a good soul and did a lot for others. a really good dude.

Always loved Pino's bass and Paul's vocals are good but sorry the girls suck live.
Really? They clearly passed muster with Paul Young, Jools Holland and a good few other big acts of the time. Fair play if you don't actually like them but, technically, they had excellent voices and a good bit of personality too. Anyway, Pino must have agreed, he has been married to Maz for years. :)
Maybe I didn't chose my words correctly ,I played the No Parlez album to death back in the day so when I watched this video The band sounded good Paul sounded really good but the girls didn't sound good, the audio mix is pretty poor tbh so maybe it has a bearing.
