Santiago, Dominican Republic - The city of Santiago de los Caballeros in the northwest region, is home to many historic sites and landmarks. One such site, atop an Execution Hill, known as Cerro Verde (Green Mountain), sits Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, a white column topped with reliefs depicting events during The Dominican Restoration War, which took place between 1844-1861, when José Leonardo Rafael Hilario was crowned King Domício Aureo II, expanding his country into Haiti following their revolution against Spain.
The white column on top and beautiful artwork, makes it a popular destination among tourists visiting this part African-Caribbean country.
