  • Moviehouse Productions presents stories of the origins of two Philadelphia delights, Hires Root Beer and Tastykake.
A druggist by trade and brilliant marketer, Charles Elmer Hires, transformed a volatile ancient brew of roots and berries into a beloved American soft drink.
Philip Bauer and Herbert Morris overcame indifference and neglect in Philadelphia's baking industry to give birth to TastyKake, the "cake that made mother stop baking."
So... maybe you washed down your TastyKake with a Hires Root Beer, or perhaps with a big glass of milk in front of your black and white 'TV"...either way, you enjoyed!!!

Having grown up in Northeast Philadelphia, I also remember going to Food Fair with my mother for that week's food shopping needs.
And before I was diagnosed as a Type-1 diabetic in 1967 (then it was referred to as "Juvenile Diabetes"), I ate more than my fair share of TastyKake Jelly Krimpets and Butterscotch Krimpets! Even as a kid, I was never a soda drinker; I preferred milk.
Have you seen the ingredient lists to what passes today as TastyKake products? I shudder to think if that's what I was engorging myself with back then!

Hires is the best mass produced root beer. But local Amish root beer and birch beer is the best !

As a Philadelphian I have a soft spot for Tastykakes especially Kandykakes. Personally I thought Hires root beer wasn’t so great,I’m a Hanks man myself.

It's a shame that Tastykake changed it's recipe when they went national - if I wanted Hostess, that's what I would buy! Living out west, I truly miss the chocolate eclair and wish they sold them here.
