i had a grandma with dementia, sometimes she would get very lucid and actually talk about how she knew her mind wasn't the same anymore. I'll never forget the time she told me and my sister she could see a beautiful woman sitting right next to me smiling, but she knew she was the only one that could actually see her
I currently have a grandma with dementia who was recently put in a nursing home and she speaks so softly and faintly but you can tell she can’t get out what she wants to say

To be honest, i'd be freaked out by a coat rack in a bedroom too. Like why is their a coat rack in my bedroom? Not to mention the shadow it is casting on the wall. By the way, this is not a "hallucination" if she is freaked out by the shadow on the wall caused by the freaky coat rack.

I dont think I would go so far as to say its not a hallucination though. Because, to mom, the coat rack was still a real person when she came back in the room the second time. It's more about the inability for mom to interpret that this is not a person, but a shape that looks like one. Likely, if she could remember that the coat rack was there, she may have realized like many without dementia would have.

Cr1mssy the point is that you treat what they’re seeing as if it’s real because it’s real to them
In the first senario she brushed it off but in the second she took mum seriously, found the issue and rectified it. It can be hard sometimes to decipher what the issue is. In this senario mum is able to both vocalise what is wrong and be mobile and competent enough to come and seek help (for example) this isn’t always the case.
Sometimes what might seem frivolous or obvious to you isn’t to someone else
Billie Joe Exactly I wish they would put in more help for low functioning people. My mom had to be taken out of the home due to current events and the can barley communicate. We actually found out recently that her nesting dolls placed on her dresser scared her to death at night. I wish we knew sooner.
Yeah my dad waves at people when he's watching tv and thinks that they can see him. He also thinks that they talk to him as well. I feel so sorry for him, but I thank god for these videos. Thankyou for posting them. They are helping me cope and teaching me what to do.

Tell him they acknowledge him, but are incredibly busy people and have scheduled those appointments he's watching them in and they have to finish them but nonetheless, they appreciate his support and greetings

My father thought I was sleeping in a big puddle of mud and water right in the middle of a busy road. And he was yelling at me to get Outta there.
That would be really creepy . One elderly lady I was looking after said she saw people moving past her room in the passage and eerily staring in at her . I felt a chill when she said that , even though I knew that it was just a hallucination on her part ...
My mom is 67 experiencing this very same thing, some say she is traveling an I should prepare for the worst but she is healthy an active but at night it scares her to death

I really like the way you showed the caregiver suggesting taking the coat rack outside of the room.
The Lady thought there's some intruder in her room, She must have let her Imagination run away with her.
I still get a little freaked out when there is a person shaped shadow in my room. I think it’s best just to have a nightlight inside the room (As long as they aren’t bothered by the light) as it will alleviate stress from normal “spooky” shadows and could help with hallucinations.

My grandmother has just had a hallucination about lions and tigers in the basement...she's been loosing her memory steady the past 3 years . It's really scary and was scary for her to. 😢 Thank you for posting this video.

Yeah, that could trigger something, but mirrors get really confusing to people with dementia, at least it's that way with my mother.
I am a caregiver here in israel, and dealing with person with dementia is not easy. My first employer have dementia and every night she's shouting and i need to be patient all the time. There are nights that i can't sleep because she's shouting all night. I need to help her to calm herself. I need to play music sometimes just to relax her.. But i didn't work sometimes..
But i love my first employer so much and its very hard for me when she passed away.. Soon i will be uploaded my tribute video for her.. And hope you everyone will visit my youtube for my journey as a caregiver in Israel..

We are experiencing the shouting with my mom. Everyone is so exhausted because she shouts and screams all night long. I feel so sorry for her because every day she says she's so tired.
For well into my childhood, like 12 or 13, I was creeped out by such things as weird shadows in my bedroom. I wouldn’t call it an hallucination, rather, lack of judgment. There was a chair with wooden arms that formed a shadow like a giant horse’s head with its mouth open over my crib. It happened whenever the moon was bright. I would lay perfectly still to prevent it from eating me until the moon’s angle changed and the horse disappeared.
My grandfather recently had hallucinations about seeing ghosts and couldn't find his belongings. He thought that we( me and my brother) had taken it. Next day, when I was at the dining table, he came up to me and told me that he will burn the house down and said that "I've already searched all in my closet, all of the clothes had been taken out and put on the bed. Still, no money were found." Then he also said something quite worrying, he said, "I've already taken care of you guys since you were 1, why are you doing this to me". I assume that he think that we stole his money. Later then, I called my father for help, then he searched for his belongings and found it. 2 days later, while I was surfing RUclips, one of my brother came up to me and ask me to take care of grandfather. I talked to grandfather and one of his sentence was "it's no use, if you want it, then take it".
What is triggering this hallucination. I'm quite worried that he will actually burn down the house. Help
Talk to his doctor. There are medications that can help with some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease. They dont cure it, but they basically help what's left of the brain function at its fullest. When the disease advances beyond their effectiveness, there's another that can help with combative tendencies. They aren't perfect, but it sure would beat having the house burn down with you and him in it.

My mother in law points to an empty couch and sees people on it or a man that disturbs her. Theres no toss pillows or visual triggers. This could be daytime, room well lit and well rested (nap) I don't discredit her I just say Im so sorry your having trouble with this which she says thank you and then gently divert. This video was a bit dumbed down :(

My grandpa with dimetia use to think there was a man in the mirror not himself and when he saw "him" it drove him crazy. So we had to remove all mirrors in the room or make sure he doesn't go into the room. Him mom also had dimentia she didn't talk to the mirror.

@@lovelylove5940 He passed away 2 year ago. But dimentia effects different people differently. Like dispite the fact that my great grandma never talked to the mirror she one put firewood on top of the stove while she was supposed to put it into the stove.
I can't remove anything. My grandma has dementia and she sees things like parrots flying inside our house, at nights she would point behind the door and say "leave me alone",sometimes she would see children running and she would try to call them to her and talk.i don't know why she is always asking"where is the matchbox?" I feel so bad for her all the time

I have a better understanding, now, of what people experience when they "see" things that aren't there. It can be terrifying - almost like a child imagining a coat rack to be something threatening.
My mum has, what the doctor is saying cognitive impairment.
That doctor said that 13 years ago or. She's got dementia...I can't tell you how helpful these tapes are but I'm telling you right now I'm going to spend a lot of my life caring for my mom. If I do this full-time, my life will not be my own anymore. I wonder if your doctor can provide a carehelper.
Yeah, I´ve been working with Alzheimer´s and Dementia and in the work environment as care assistants, nurses, health care staff we work with many elders, dementia, and Alzheimer taking care of them from morning to evening. So it is quite a personal assistant job .
This happens with my mom but with dreams she talks about everything she's done all day but she's been in a hospital bed all week and I tell her but she didn't but won't budge and it saddens me that I will never have my old mom back and the other week she was just fine and now she's this torn down in a week and almost fell in a permanent coma. And I'm just a kid.

In my limited experience as a lay person working overnight in an apartment building for independent seniors it's best to acknowledge and deal with the emotional response first people are emotional first and rational maybe second. That does not get less true has dementia deepens. I find there's often a fixation on the perceived responsibility or threat. Even if you can distract them in their thoughts the emotions persist intend to just drag them back in the same direction. You're better off recognizing and acknowledging what they're feeling and focusing on changing the feeling rather than hoping bald facts will do that for you.

My grandpa is 85-90 years old. His dementia has taken a turn for the worse recently, and now he's taking medications I used to take for hallucinations. He helped design and work on nuclear power plants and could tell you details about it, but he doesn't remember who we are on the zoom call every Sunday. We're working on getting palliative care for him so Grandma can take a break once in a while to get her hair done or shop or hang out with a friend.
Update: he's in a nursing home.

Last night was the first time this happened. There were a couple of things that could have been triggers, but most of it was things that she was seeing out of the corner of her eye. She had cataract surgery about a year ago, and I think maybe poor eyesight could have played a part of it. But I need to learn how to better talk her through it and this helped a bit. I just pointed out the truth instead of appeasing her ( idk if that’s the right way to word it) and convincing her I made it better. Anyway, this is rough, thanks for the pointers.
Even though this video is 5 years old, as a caregiver, 90 year old mother may have alzheimers or dementia. Scary times. Hate to see what happens next day, week or month. Will consult her doctor asap. Very informative video👍

My dad is always seeing 2 kids everynight and sometimes he told me there were many people inside his room..

What not to do:
- Say there is no one there and use physical contact to move them back to bed
What to do:
- Identify the cause and move it out of the way
Ensure to keep the trigger eliminated
See things through her eyes, identity possible triggers

Geee.....I'm 74 and I am concerned for my 56 year old room mate, he has been hallucinating
in our complex where we live for a few years almost and it has been very traumatic and annoying, not to mention what the neighbors think. He will go out and say and do stuff out of sorts to say the least, then take pictures and set up cameras and says, see, I'm gonna catch one, but he won't go for a test and it is getting worst. His mom passed of this disease and I'm afraid he really has it too as it is hereditary! People do get it young and I am the ole gal and it is very sad and hard on me as well!

My grandma doesn't even seem to have dementia, at least not from what I've seen, but just recently she's started to talk about how she's repeatedly seen "four faces" in various settings that she's told to go away, and now a "woman in white clothes with black hair at the end of her bed."
The latter sounds like a Japanese yurei or some shit and I'm really terrified for the state of her brain.
I work as a caregiver in a retirement home and they really do start hallucinating when they have dementia/are reaching end of life. :(

I start my job as a night caregiver at a nursing home. I am studying up so I can somewhat know what to expect.
My mother in law would sit on her bed saying she was looking after a little boy and was talking to him.
Thank you for this video. My mother in law sees bugs and men in the house. Sometimes they are there fixing stuff and sometimes they are robbing her. I don't know what to do. Sometimes, I say I kicked him out and other times I say they are not there. She also sees her sisters, has conversations and walks about with them. I am happy that she has not ventured out. We called her doctor and he says nothing. He used to say it was a bladder infection and had her on antibiotics. Her husband is about useless. I do not know what to do. I try to get her children to do something, but they are at a loss because when she is lucid she refuses treatment. What can be done to help her?
You need to get access to her online medical records. The lab work will show results concerning any blood irregularities or nutrient deficiencies. My Mom's doctors never addressed or even mentioned that her white blood cell count had begun to drop radically. Her immune system was compromised and once that happens, any number of internal complications can occur. Bacterial infections in the gut or brain, etc., lead to disaster as the brain is poisoned by toxins in the blood stream. My Mom was resistant, I had a similar situation. Some terrible health complications can be addressed with simple medications or even better, through dietary adjustments. Someone in the family needs to have your mother in law sign off on Medical Power of Attorney (if not full power of attorney) to begin advocating for her. She has to sign off before she is deemed mentally incompetent. She can still make decisions for herself but this allows her advocate to attend doctor/hospital visits with her to hear what is said. If her cognitive functions continue to slip, eventually someone will need to have POA and advocate for her completely. Don't put it off because once she is deemed incompetent, she can't sign a POA. POA can be officiated by a local Notary Public but it's best to have someone go over it with you and do it correctly. Look into "Durable Power of Attorney". Medical POA can be granted to you, without any other legal controls your family members may be concerned with. If they cooperate with you on these things, get access to her online medical records and look carefully at her lab results. Some of it is not so easy to figure out but any glaringly obvious issue may likely jump right out at you. Then you need to ask her doctor/s about those issues specifically and find out what can be done. Don't let them brush you off and if they make you feel uncomfortable, request another doctor immediately. I suggest all this because of my personal experiences with caring for my Mom full time and always being at a loss about what to do to help. Her doctors never mentioned critical lab results and made us feel small for seeking the help she needed.

My grandma too and she's religious and prays for them to go away. She's seeing the color red as well. She's Korean and says she saw American ppl and since she can't speak English and couldn't tell them she's calling the police. She asked me to to help if they came back since I speak English and half Caucasian.

My concern is when your loved one is prescribed medications that MAKE the person have side effects and cognitive problems and paranoia happen.
A terrible disease it took my mother Alzheimer's even more disturbing when I was married my mother was going to go stay with my sister he brought her down to say to see me and her two grandchildren while visiting there just for a couple of days my narcissistic husband tried to throw my mother out into the street with nowhere to go she was visiting me and our two children disgusting disturbing human being to do this to an elderly woman which is still owed and never paid her back the $800 that he borrowed from her when even allow his children to go to her funeral deny them the right to say goodbye

This was actually no help. My father sees people in the house all the time. Will sit there and cpunt the people. 25 people in the house or there were 15 people in his bed or he couldnt take a shower cuz someone was in there. It never ends. Someone is taking the tire off the car, I mean it is always something. So its not an object that he is seeing that he is misinterpreting.

I got so many delusions when I was younger. Specially when I'm sick or feeling withdrawn to people.

My grandma condition is that she doesn’t recognize the people around her anymore. She calls dead people, lives ancient events, and imagines different world. Please send me anything might help.
I wish this worked, but sadly after 3 to 5 minutes they come flying out of the room again. My mom's is lasting all night, we haven't slept for 3 days and my son is terrified of her. She is constantly taking off her oxygen and staying up all night long, even with all of the medication..nothing helps.

My grandma would see spiders, I didn't know how to deal with it. I tried showing her they weren't there, but she would insist and get mad at me. So do you pretend to see them, or do you explain that they're not really there? Either way doesn't work. We think it was some meds she was on. She would yell all night sometimes, talk to people from her past.
u apply a simple body lotion saying it will protect her from spiders. ans spders will be burnt and don't return anymore.

Seeing a shadow or a coat rack in the room is not an haluciation.... My mother in law always saw things but really believe d hellicopters were landing in the room and would push us out the way so we didn't get squashed...now that's a proper hallucination.

My grandmother says she gets messages ( hearing voices). I'm not sure what triggers it though. I'm not sure what to do.
Mississippi Mama she may be hearing spirits ask her to ask them things she shouldn’t know and see if they tell her the correct answer also see if she can get them to tell her who they are and where they live/lived then look them up if any photos can be found of the people and ask her is this who your hearing/seeing
Mississippi Mama....Your grandmother is old and has succumbed to dementia. What you need to do is place her in a facility, be kind to her, and try to get on with your life. Robert.
Can she tell you what the messages are? If they are peaceful or comforting I would just leave it alone. If the messages are scary or upsetting, I wouldn't know what to do about it either.

My grandma's doc prescribed an antibiotic for UTI but it gives her headaches anyway, I don't think it a UTI.

You might have schizophrenia
Some things may be spirits or demons for those try asking them to GO AWAY !!! and saging if they continue then go for meds unless there not scary like a child’s imaginary friend

This is not helpful at all. They see things that are not there, I can not remove nothing from the room. Like its always that obvious what is upsetting them, they have dementia, so most of the time they forget the words "Evil man in room" and just come out screaming. what to so then . thanks for nothing

On Nov 3, 2016, I was told I will not be getting a kidney transplant because I have blood circulation problems. I live in the US.my wife have had Dementia and many miscarriages over 18 year's of marriage we have done everything possible in the medical field with no results.
In my 20's , I developed venous statis in which the capillaries pop and my skin darkens on both my legs below my knees and above my ankles.
I have a inherited kidney disease as FSGS and minimal change , two kidney disorders. At that time, there was no treatment for me because my blood was normal but I had proteinuria alot of it.
My kidney disease didn't really getbad until 2006, then I was referred to a kidney doctor. He prescribed predisone. It didn't work on me. It was supposed to slow down the disease. But my problems befan to appear in 2012, when I started to gain weight, I thought at the time I was eating too much, but I later discovered it was excess water. Because later that year, my legs started to leak water. I actually had to squeeze the water out of my socks and trousers. Then I developed claudication which causes pain on my calf muscles in the back of my legs. I would walk a few steps and they would seize up. I would rest a few moments and the pain would go away. Then walk a few more steps and again experience pain.
Then in February 2014, my kidneys finally failed and I was put on haemodialysis. Then I lost circulation in my toes, then gangrene then amputations in May 2014 on my left foot then my left leg below the knee in June 2014Then my big toe on my right leg, on October 2014, and theno the rest of my toes in Nov 2014.
By July 2014, I lost 40 liters of of water or 88 pounds of water through haemodialysis.
I thought since I had 20 other medical problems besides my 2 kidney disorders that I wouldn't qualify for a kidney transplant. Plus I have 47 chromosomes.
But at least, I now know, I won't be getting a kidney.Unless someone invents a cure for poor blood circulation.

To be honest so much difficult to take care the person had dementia.. so much fighting i don't know how to handle it

The honest truth.......I really believe when a person gets closer to the Other Side, if you know what I mean, I think they actually are seeing into another dimension, but that doesn't mean that dementia isn't real either, just that, it could be paranormal as well!
