Wow thanks a lot. It's really been a long way but it still feels like the journey has just started and curious to see what's coming next. Thanks for sticking around 💜
I have no musical tallent beyond playing casually with my CDJs, but Dune and this video has got me inspired to buy a synth to play and make the huge sounds you have created
I'm no pro dj, but it always fascinated me. I recall days as silly as it was to mix between Napster and Morpheus and win mix hoping to beat match tracks. Finally getting Virtual Dj, still, I was naïve to where these sounds truly came from. The synth journey began with a Roland SH-201 and it's super saw wave started the journey of synthesizers, drum machines and midi to keep it all in sync together, with the control to randomize and organically develop sounds through many beloved instruments. It's worth it.
Awesome, go for it! Like embazle said it's quite a journey and you have so many options that it stays interesting and rewarding. And most of all sound designing and composing is just a ton of fun. 💜
@@MilesKvndra thanks man! It's a rabbit hole I'm falling down right now, trying to find something fun but good value incase I don't enjoy it or don't use it. Any recommendations welcome!
@@Pastronomer69 I started to try a lot of software synths in my DAW which helped me to get a better understanding of synthesis in general before picking some hardware gear to buy. It’s not quite the same but definitely cheaper for the start. Recommending a hardware beginner synth is tricky as there are a lot of options. In general I’d say a subtractive synth (the Moog Sub 25 is also one) is a good starting point, it’s not as complex as FM synthesis or waveform synthesis (in my eyes).
Your Dune track pushed me over the hump to get the Subsequent 25. Been eyeing it for a long time and finally got one a couple days ago. It is unquestionably the best sounding synth I’ve ever put my hands on. Even over the Matriarch which I had for a while. Thank you! Fantastic song as well.
Wow that’s awesome to hear! Glad you enjoy it so much - I really liked the Matriarch too when I first played it and thought about it, curious to hear what it is that you don’t like about it?
@@MilesKvndra the short answer is the oscillators. I didn’t feel they were as strong or full as other Moogs. The Matriarch has a ton of flexibility, and is a great modular playground, but for performance and repeatable patch generation, I find the 25 to be much more appropriate and satisfying. Then it just has that big full Moog sound I love.
@@edrift3d interesting! Need to give the Matriarch another go. But yeah 100% agree on the performance side of things, the Sub 25 is perfect for that. Could be a little lighter and more compact for transportation but once it’s on stage I know it was worth taking it 🙂
Nice breakdown M! Thanks for always taking time to share insights of your process, always bringing valuable points on the table. I've lately been trying to re-create a "similar" sound/vibe with the Roland S-1. I'm still very far away from this at the moment haha. I guess I'd have to upgrade to the MS25 at some point haha XD! Wishing you a lovely day out there my mate! We talk soon
Thanks so much my friend! I’ve done the same thing on the Digitone but it’s not quite the same - the Moog filter + oscillators are something special. Hope they can keep up the quality now that they are a part of inMusic. Chat soon my friend 💜
Thank you! Yeah I’ve thought about the Sub 37 but I needed a synth that I can also travel with/bring to gigs which is why I went for the 25. the 37 is slightly bigger and heavier, which definitely makes a difference. However, if I would’ve searched for a studio synth I’d definitely have gone for the 36. The additional modulation options + the built in arpeggiator are amazing features!
This was amazing. I've been hooked on Dune since it came out, listened to it many times and would love to learn how to build up synth music like this. I can't afford to splash out on a Sub25, could anyone recommend a VST synth that will get my in the ballpark of this? I tried Helm and Tyrell N6, and I can't seem to find the corresponding controls on them.
Thanks so much! Before owning hardware analog synths, my favourite VST synths were the u-he Diva and the Native Instruments Monark (this one is only a mono synth). If you are an Ableton user, the Drift synth that comes with Ableton is also amazing. I have been doing a lot of sound design with it recently.
This sounds absolutely great !! I just tried to recreate it at home and got fairly close but not quite identical (sub25+ValhallaSupermassive). Is there any chance you could share screenshot of plugin editor? e.g. how many poles on filter, filter amplifier settings etc. btw. do you have any idea what "osc 2 beat frequency" does? I just cannot work it out. Great work!!
@@MilesKvndra Ah OK! Thanks. I will reset mine to factory settings and will try again. Yes "Osc 2 beat frequency" is a hidden parameter. I cannot remember all the shortcut combos from "user manual," so I am using VST plugin (Subsequent25 Editor). It opens a lot of extra options which have dramatic impact on sound and it is great for automation in Ableton. It was a bit of a faff to download it from Moog website, but I got there eventually. Sub25 is such a "simple" to use synth, but in good hands it can do spectacular things. I made only one song with it so far, but the difference between that song and all my other songs is quite large. ps. your music is top of the top. pps. @@piotrgraniczka3563 ah okay that makes sense! I definitely need to utilise the VST plugin more, just used it in the beginning to set up some stuff and I use it to save/organise my presets but I barely look at it as I more play the synth live with the parameters at hand. And yeah the Audiofuse Studio is great, really happy with it as my studio interface!
Hey, I mainly choose it for size and weight reasons. The 25 is a slimmed down version of the 37, so you can do all that and even more with a 37. But as I travel a lot with the setup to gigs, I need it to be as compact as possible and therefore went for the Sub 25.
Thanks so much for this masterclass! Your Dune piece made me buy a sub25... BTW how did you manage to get this master miles controls mapping to control the sends on ableton?
Wow this is awesome and congrats on the new synth! The controls is basically an FX rack in Ableton using multiple instances of Multimap + Map8 (both M4L devices), which I use to control various parameters during live sets just with 16 macros that I can access on Push. It's quite deep, so I planned to do a video about it some time in the future.
@@chatdesalpes I usually apply my FX to multiple tracks or even groups of tracks so it makes more sense for me to have them set up as send/return channels. With this Valhalla Supermassive it’s a special case: I initially wanted to use it on multiple tracks but ended up using it only on the Moog. So you’re right, technically I could use it also directly on the Moog track.
Small correction: when talking about attack it is important to talk about duration or tume, not amount or value. "Increasing attack" or "adding a little attack" are erroneous terms that are both confusing and wrong in the sense that they often describe the opposite of what people are trying to convey. "Adding attack" (what many incorrectly mean as adding time) in literal terms means shortening the attack time and conversely, decreasing attack means adding more time to create a slow or long attack! 😊
Hey if you release the song just on RUclips without monetisation turned on that is fine but officially releasing wouldn’t work as the license for Dune is handled by Audiio, who are managing the Content IDs for my music.
