You just have to sit down and figure out "what are the steps I would need to go through to start a real car that video games don't usually make me do", then there is a button for each of those steps(and if you look at the relevant spot inside the car it will tell you the button). The evil/funny bit is that of course a typical gamer is going to sit down, try to drive but nothing happens, assume getting the car working is a puzzle using the other stuff nearby, and then start making things more difficult for themselves by trying to solve that non-existent puzzle.

I'ma be honest because I have this game and have played it before so I thought to myself "I'll do it. It can't be that hard right?" only to have the same issues though it took me 2 seconds to figure out the first issue being the handbreak and 10 minutes for me to give up and ask my brother who plays the game more why it wouldn't start only to find out that I was driving a european car and for some reason european cars have so you put the gas AND oil in the fuel tank for some reason instead of having a designated oil pan at the front of the car
European cars also have a dedicated oil pan. The car you were driving had a two-stroke engine and those require a premix of gas and oil. It's a game design decision, not a wholly European thing. Some of the engines in the game have a pan, some don't.

It's easier in some merits but far harder on others. It basically trades the complexity of one car for multiple less complex cars and nightmarishly complex controls (you control the hands individually and several objects require coordinating with both). On the road there are gas and diesel cars, right-driver seat cars, buses, monster trucks, '50 oldies and the sort you will inevitably have to trade your first car once it gets totaled or you can't find the right kind of fuel for it, or you can cannibalize some of the external components of one onto the other with some comedic effect, like tractor tires on a beetle. One popular mod for the game adds the MSC cars as well.
i really like this game lol, but being honest it gets really boring once you get a buss going, you can keep so much stuff on those bad boys that you only need to stop on the ships for fuel
