  • We are back at Chris Tilley's superb Barle Valley Light Railway, this time all at half speed playback with his newly restored Roundhouse Old Colonial. Chris bought this in 1985 and later converted it to 7/8ths, but after 28 years the slip eccentric valve gear had worn out. Tony Willmore at Rhos Helyg Loco Works rebuilt the valve gear and lined it out. It is spirit fired, manual control and is barely run in yet. One of the open wagons was built by Rob Bennett (of Busybodies) and the rest were built by Chris. The driver was a bit preoccupied with keeping his pipe alight and out of the wind, but needless to say he got into trouble for not looking where he was going!
After an hour of making Part 1. we had lost the will to try to get the slowest running and so let the loco potter round at her own speed. It was just a bit too fast for relaxing video so I edited it all to half speed, slow motion. It makes the simple blast pipe 'enhancer' sound rather nice. No Summerlands Chuffers were involved in the making of this film!
