I've just watched 3 lapped zip tutorials and you're the ONLY person who has explained how to make the lap in a way that makes sense. I've been sewing for 30 years and it's never made sense until now. Thanks heaps!
Thank you so much! after watching a lot of useless lapped zipper tutorials , and getting more and more frustrated, finally I came across your brilliant video !! You are the best teacher !! Thank You🎊
I've been sewing since I was ...10? And I'm 41 now. (Pretty much self taught) I've always hated zippers with a passion. I decided to figure out what I've been missing that makes it so hard. I've been watching videos for 2 hours. Everyone teaches a lapped zip but they skip over exactly how to get those edges and seam allowances where they need to be. You explained it exactly how I needed to hear it Thank you!
I think it helps to use a slightly larger seam allowance . I use a 5/8 and I do not trim it before I lay the zipper. You can pre finish the seam edges with a serger or zig zag before hand.
I have watched so many lapped zipper videos but it's only now that I really understand it. Marking the original seam allowance made it so much easier to understand. Thank you!
I think this is the easiest tutorial I've seen . Thank you for the details in the explanation you've saved me so much time and given me a much better finish on my dress ❤
I'm an experience sewist, but have never done a lapped zip before. Thank you for your clear and concise instructions; I'm just off to insert my first lapped zip!
This is the best and fastest method for heavy gowns made from expensive fabrics. There are other tutorials on RUclips using wonder tape or using machine basting which are not really useful unless you're making a simple project esp using cotton material. Not everyone has access to wonder tape. Also the basting method by machine can even cause bubbles and wrinkles which after you seam rip the material will cause further damage I recommend this method only. Esp for beginners
Wonderrful video. I havent put a zip into clothes for years. I realise now where i was making my mistake. I will try one today in a dress i am making. Thanks
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I've just completed my 1st ever lapped zip while sewing along to your video. It's in the centre back of a denim skirt and looks sooooo much better than the "centred" zip I've always used. I love it, thank you 💗.
There are so many lapped zip tutorials on RUclips, and I think I've tried them all. I do believe this is the best I have ever seen. Beautiful result. The only thing I struggle with, but you don't seem to have this problem, is topstitching over the tacking guide threads. I find that they are locked in by the topstitching and can never really be completely removed. So annoying!
peggy olson Thank you! - glad you found this useful. You could try using a water soluble thread for tacking - the stitches will all dissolve once you wash them. Just don’t use this type of thread for regular sewing!! 😊
This was really clear, thank you! I'm thinking of making some summery pants and was wondering if you recommended inserting the zipper this way or another way like the fly zip or invisible zip?
Hi - thank you for your comment. I would use this type of zip finish on the side seam of trousers (pants) or possibly in the centre back. If you're using the lapped zip on the side seam you want the lap to be positioned to the front, so the zip is partially hidden when viewing from the front. The invisible zip could also be used in the side seam or centre back. If the opening on your trousers is at the centre front I think a fly zip finish would look best.
