NOTE: For this to work, the user will likely have to sign into their Google account because the file will be saved to their Google Drive, and you need a Google account to have a Google Drive account.

Thank you! I was looking at older ways to do this and it kept on doing viewform and wouldn't copy. Thank you!

Thank you for this! Question. I sell Google Doc templates. Every once in a while, a customer "requests access" via Google Docs. How is that even possible when I've taken them to a "make a copy" page?

Probably because they edit the URL and change it back to “edit” and then request edit access? That would be my guess at least. I just ignore those requests lol

question; what if the copy that I force them to create/download I still want to have access to look at it with them to see the edits... is that a thing?

Good question! They’d have to then share their downloaded/copied version with you for you to get access to it.

But what's stopping them from just flipping it back to the original via that link? I'm trying to make this bulletproof so someone can't just re-edit the link and have full access. I need them to be an editor but for their own copy without being able to access the original.

Even if they switch it back to edit, if the doc itself only has viewer access, they won’t be able to edit it. If your share link grants edit access, then it could be a problem. But viewer access would make them have to copy it in order to edit anything.

Thanks Mariah - I appreciate your short and concise explanations. I'm curious. I've created an e-book in canva that I've uploaded to my GDrive to share with people. Is it possible to create an additional page in canva and add it to my google doc book, or do I have to do it all in Canva and re upload the whole thing? Hope my question makes sense.

Aw yay, thank you! I’m glad you’re finding them helpful. For your situation I think you’d have to do it all in Canva and then reupload the whole thing, which would then create a different sharing link. It’s kind of a pain, but that’s the only way I’m aware of how to do it.
