  • This was a special moment of commemoration, in a genre to which I have very little attachment. But I found the music to be incredibly compelling and inspiring in a way that I truly did not expect. If you watch this video, you will hear the tragic story.
Please share, and encourage your friends to share. We would very much like this message of support and appreciation to reach the sole surviving band member, Andrei Găluț!

RIP to the members of the Goodbye to Gravity and those who lost their lives, in a senseless avoidable situation.
As a musician and metalhead, I am hit with an awful impact of what occurs when events like this take place. It is why we have rules and regulations, particularly when Pyrotechnique's are involved. A dreadful loss of life indeed.
As for the song and band. Although I am not a Metal Core fan, I certainly respect the artform and truly appreciate what they are doing and how they are doing it. The years of work it takes to make the band "tight" is significant, more time than many would give it credit for. In addition, to make one's voice work the way it it does in this band take a great deal of practice so as not to destroy the vocal folds in one's voice. The thing I do really like about this song, and Amy, you pointed it out, is the atmosphere it creates. Metal is one of the few genres of music that can convey the darker side of life, the chaos, the misery and tragedy, which is ironic due to what would happen at this show. For me, I don't always want to hear about happy, wishful thinking, "pleasant" songs, sometimes I want to hear the bad things and I want it provided on those honest terms, which of course requires and hugely aggressive and "in your face" level of performance. Metal Core, although bordering on Extreme Metal is certainly not as aggressive as Grind Core, Death Metal, or certain Black Metal (and their subgenres) but it does come close. Goodbey to Gravity, does an excellent job of performing this style of music. Like many of those of us who are "open minded" will tell you, the music and its content may not be our "cup of tea" but for me, I can see the immense amount of talent and hard work it took the members of this band to pull their repertoire of music together. It is such a tragedy that their lives were cut short, and I expect their family and friends sincerely mourn their loss... AS IT SHOULD BE!!!!! My condolences Vlad.

You've hit the nail on the head when you talk about the sense of power that heavy music like this embodies. It can be angry, sad, and everything between, but at its heart, it's about making the audience feel heard and offer a sense of support and act as a source of power.
Heavy metal, despite sounding angry, tends to comfort it's listeners. It embodies the strength of our emotions, and turns them into raw sound.

Thanks Vlad for bringing this to our attention. You had a very powerful opening message containing much wisdom that can be had from such a tragic event. A very talented band, you are doing your part in bringing them to our attention, not just because of the story, but because they were a great band. I like most metal, but often don't like the harsh vocal style, but it worked really well in this song. Very powerful and meaningful lyrics. Actually, here in Brazil, there has been a similar tragedy in January, 2013. 202 died and 636 where injured in a fire in a night club. 4 people, among them the vocalist of the band playing, who shot a firework that started the fire and the owners of the club where convicted to 18 to 22 years of imprisonment. So sad !!!

The interplay… between the bass and the guitars, between the bass and the drums, between the guitar and the vocals, between the song sections, between the vocal styles, between heaviness and lift, and of course between the lyrics and reality 💔 Most moved I’ve been yet by a song I didn’t already know. I have two things to say but before that, thank you. This is very personal to me.
I am in Romania, I'm a rock musician and also classically trained with a PhD in Musicology. I lost five people I personally knew that day. I knew all the members of the band, from when they were younger and playing in different bands, I shared the stage with them often.
Plus there was Adrian Rugină, who organized one of the best concerts I've ever played in.
He died a hero. Got out of the club and went back five times to save others. He saved four, the fifth time couldn't come out. Our former producer, also our web designer suffered severe injuries, the latter being treated for months in Israel. So this one hits home. The producer's wife went home just ten minutes before the fire started saying that she's too tired. They have a daughter who was 4 at the time.
At that time I was working in a high school as a music teacher. Just two weeks before the tragedy I was talking to my students about disco. Both the musical genre and the institution.
I read to them some sad statistics about fires, shootings, stampedes that claimed lives in such venues through the years and I remember telling them: If you ever go to such a place, do yourselves a favor and before the fun begins locate the exits. I never thought that my warning will gain so much weight within just two weeks.
My other remark is regarding harsh vocals.
There are several ways and techniques to achieve that safely and in a healthy manner. Since I also work as a vocal coach, i am familiar with some of them. The thing is, listening to this kind of interpretation and understanding the words takes some getting used to. Some vocalists are very good at growling in an intelligible way, even female growlers, such as Alissa White-Gluz or Tatyana Shmaylyuk.
In time, as you listen to more and more songs that feature such harsh vocals you'll be able to discern more and more.
Oh, and most Romanians from that generation and younger have a pretty decent command of English. I am myself a lyricist in my band :)

In 2003 there was a fire in a Rhode Island club when the band Great White was playing. 100 people died, well over 200 people were injured, the fire started during the first song when the band's manager set off some pyrotechnics.
I'm not trying to minimize this incident, what I'm saying is people have to be very careful and very aware when attending an event in a small venue because in the end, you're responsible for yourself, an unfortunate but true reality. I went to see Ritchie Blackmore at a small club in NJ years ago, the owners were known to be corrupt and not only oversold tickets, they also let anyone in without tickets as long as they had money. Sometime during the first song we could feel the push of the crowd behind us, we were close to the stage. We decided to leave during the first song because we didn't feel safe. Luckily nothing happened but it's not worth taking a chance with your life. If you don't feel safe, leave. Always make sure to check for exits no matter where you go in case something happens.
My heart goes out to everyone affected by that horrible tragedy, as well as the many others that have happened around the world. Reconsider staying to see a show, especially in a small club, where pyrotechnics are involved. Corruption is rampant in every business, on every level. Sometimes we can only count on ourselves to stay safe. 🙏🙏🙏

@@yinoveryang4246 My Doctor is from Romania and from things he's told me, I imagine the corruption is on another level. It's horrible the way corruption trumps the lives of people who are doing nothing more than trying to enjoy themselves. Knowing there's a special level of Hell for those people does nothing to take away the pain and loss. It's beyond tragic.
Leaving the Blackmore show wasn't what I really wanted but my gut said get out asap. The owners of the club were literally mob-related, they cared about money and nothing more. Luckily I've seen Blackmore a bunch of times, with Deep Purple (to Amy, he's the guitar player in your Child In Time reaction), Rainbow, and Blackmore's Night. But even if it was the only time I saw him, I still would have left. I unfortunately saw the World Trade Center collapse, both Towers, from where I live in NJ. The smell of death and destruction lingered for what seemed like months and from the end of my street there was a clear view of the place they took all the debris, knowing there were people in those never-ending line of trucks made me sick. That day changed the way I looked at things any time I went anywhere. I always make sure to have an exit strategy everywhere I go now, and I always will. It's a horrible but necessary way to live your life 💔

Fortunately in that case, they were able to get everybody out, although the fire destroyed the building.

After the fall off the wall, basically, the same people that were in positions of power during communism, kept their jobs. This cannot help the psychological state of affairs and peoples trust in their neighbours in Eastern Europe. I suspect that when a way of life, certain power-structures, become culturally ingrained - it takes a long time to eliminate it. With human nature, sometimes all you can do is pray. 🙏Disasters are bound to happen, through negligence and greed. Some like 9/11, are more man-made. There's a difference.

    90+ deaths and 200+ hospitalizations.
I actually don't know if it garnered much national attention, but around here, it was a major shock that quickly became a larger scandal once the details of the owners' negligence started to trickle out. Beyond the fire itself, the deaths included club employees and the owners actually tried to stiff their families on compensation. It went to trial but the owners basically just got a slap on the wrist compared to what they were responsible for.

I dont know how he will find a will to carry on, but I hope he somehow managed/manages it.
It was your first metalcore song. Metalcore bands tend to blend low, growly vovlcals in verses, focused lyrically on more depressing, violent or just more emotionaly exausting aspects of topic of a song with clean, even slightly pop-y vocals on choruses, focused on more hopefull or emotionally relieving message of a song. The same goes for guitar riffs, motifes and melodies - lower, rithmic (often machine gun like mono note patterns) and more distorted in verses vs very melodic, often charmonised in choruses.

Hi Amy, Despite being heavily into metal music, the band, the song, and the tragedy that accompanied this performance were all unfamiliar to me. I gladly went in blind and experienced it all for the first time, together with you. I liked the actual song a great deal, but even more, your capacity to recognize its value as mind stimulation despite not being personally enamored of heavy music (at least not yet). 😁
Despited the tragic circumstances, I think the very nature of the tragedy, and the fact you knew of it before listening to the song, likely increased your capacity to "commune" with the lyrics and the overall tone of anger and outrage. As you listen to more and different types of heavy music, I suggest you keep in mind how and why this music is so compelling, most especially to youth, younger and not fully mature minds aged 8 to 25. As an educator, you may come to realize how this music fosters critical thinking skills regarding the most profound issues of human consciousness, within vulnerable and undeveloped minds that are being subjected to brutal ideological and indoctrinative assault.
The "aural assault" of heavy music is an antidote to the brainwashing, indictrination, and culling of critical thinking skills that every modern society undertakes against children and all with brains that are not fully developed, which means in most cases until age 30 at a minimum. Of course the actual conscious awareness and focus upon this fact by the heavy music lover is often very limited and submerged. The more immediate, visceral impact is almost always emotional, not intellectual. And yet the overall role of such music in broadening the individual mindscapes of countless millions, needs to be fully understood and appreciated by the music "scholar".
To broaden the definition of what is "corruption", it is good to understand that by far, the single greatest form of corruption is the universal culling of consciousness that EVERY child and adolescent is subjected to. The externally imposed narrowing of thought and mind process, so that every adult becomes trapped in a brain box, unable to see that almost everything about life is wrong, and CAN be changed, can be fixed, but will NEVER actually be fixed because the species itself has been culled of the mind freedom to perceive reality, truth, and possibility as it actually exists within the uncaged, newborn brain of every child.
And so heavy metal music revolves around the themes of pain, trauma, suffering, rage, victimization, revenge, attack. You can say it is all, in one way or another, a direct response to the universal child abuse that we are all subjected to. Because at its core, child abuse, no matter how it manifests, is simply the destruction of purity, freedom, and mind potential, the instinctual craving for truth and knowledge that every child initially possesses at birth, before the "corruption", never admitted to, never recognized or acknowledged as such by the collective consciousness of hopelessly mind-corruped humanity, is committed.
    Take Care, Amy!

Hopefully you will have the opportunity in the future to return to Deep Purple. Their song 'Smoke on the Water' has a more positive result from a similar potential tragedy. The lyrics are very descriptive of the fire that occurred at the casino they were recording at in Montreux, Switzerland. They were recording there at the same time Frank Zappa was doing a concert. Fortunately they were able to get everyone out, although the building was destroyed. I have a feeling it might be on the list of songs coming from Karl, since it has one of the most famous guitar riffs of all time.

Part of why the words are so hard to understand is that this type of vocals has no clearly defined pitch, only a frequency area where most of the sound happens. Your reactor colleague Elizabeth Zharoff from "The Charismatic Voice" has an excellent video about that, where she dissects the "pitch" in a spectrum analyzer. The song analyzed is the "Pain Remains" trilogy by Lorna Shore.
    Link: ruclips.net/video/Di_I3bkDnPE/видео.html
Warning: You might enjoy the voice on "Pain Remains" even less than in this song. Will Ramos' voice is even more extreme and grating to someone new to heavy metal music. I still find it a bit much myself, after listening to a lot of extreme metal over the years.
By the way, I know exactly one singer with harsh vocals where the words are clearly understandable to me, and that is Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy. So having difficulty here is to be expected.

Lauren Hart of Once Human has a great video explaining how to sing like this (before she learned the proper technique, she stated her throat would literally bleed while singing)
      ruclips.net/video/VjICgCZx3p0/видео.html
Good point about undefined pitch, as this kind of singing (also called guttural vocals or death growls) is very different than singers like James from Metallica or Joe from Gojira, who are (mostly) singing in a shouting style (control of air compression resulting in vocal distortion) but to a defined pitch.
As to why these styles of vocals would be used....they are effective in conveying darker human emotions (anger (usually righteous), depression, trauma, disbelief, rage) in a way that clean vocals might be less effective.

Unfortunately, this disaster is all too representative of Romania. The authorities did not care to do their jobs, they used their positions to make some more money on the side, and were confident that nothing will go wrong. Well, it all went wrong. And as usual, all the wrong people suffered. The people that died there were blameless. Innocent bystanders that trusted the system. Most of the people that were forced to resign and even some that were found guilty were also not the ones to blame. Maybe some can be blamed for ignorance, but those that should have shouldered the blame will never be punished. Because, you see, in order to be allowed to profit off of Romanian corruption you have to be in with "the boys". You have to be part of the mafia. And they don't let their own take the fall. At most you get a slap on the wrist, but you'll be fine.
And thus the country goes on, from one disaster to another. The people in their state of powerlessness always take the hit. Then the people in charge take the tragedy and use it as political ammunition against their enemies. And so it is that despite literally executing our communist dictator by firing squad in 1989, communism is still alive and well in Romania. They just call it "social democracy" these days.

    What a shocking story!
I can really understand your feeling that a musical analysis being a bit out of the place. During the first listen I also noticed different things, that could be interesting to talk about from a musical point of view, like the chorus being relatively melodic in contrast to the roaring verses.
But it doesn't really matter, does it? - Not up against that horrible story. It was people who became victims.
If someone come and tell you, that both his parents just died, it is not the appropriate time to tell him, that he has buttoned his jacket crookedly or give a review of his choice of words. Like saying "That was a fine rhetorical detail using that expression" or such things. It is so totally irrelevant.
It was people trying to express themself in a country with a dark history of repression and being a very messy affair when they finally could speak. They were trying to say something relevant. We must respect that. If we like or dislike the way they did it from an aesthetic point of view doesn't matter.
I think you should have taken the consequence of feeling uncomfortable going into an analysis instead of forcing yourself to do it anyway.

Last year I also discovered the late, great Chuck Schuldiner and Death. Now I adore MDM(melodic death metal) bands like Dark Tranquilty , Insomnium , Mors Principium Est et al...
The musical versatility and talent in these "extreme metal" bands is often otherworldly.

I really tried with this channel. It has a lot of potential, it has a lot of good reviews of really good music. Sadly a lot of fixation with metal and music is a lot more than that, special rock music. I haven't seen nothing of alternative, kraut, indie, just a little pinch of psychedelic, no latin rock, no indo raga rock, post rock, math rock, ... but yes a lot of metal, (and even in metal is too limited, I don't see Grunge, Nu Metal, Stoner)... at this point, it should be "virgin metal, prog (and a few other preferences in rock music)". And this isn't Amy's fault, I really appreciate her job, and is a tragedy that her potential has being wasted. Claps for making reviews of The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, The Who... and that kind because yes, those are essentials, even Metallica and Black Sabbath was ok and I clap for Tool and Opeth, because of their musical richness but most of the times they want to go for something newer do we really need, Nightwish, Marilion, King Diamond, Van Halen, Caligula's Horse?... What's next... Dream Theater, Guns 'n Roses? If there's people that likes glam and that kind of stuff it's ok, nothing wrong with that, but all that music is so pretentious, so out of honesty, so out of Blues, Soul, Groove and a lot more of afroamerican roots that gave popular music that "freedom of speech" that the occidental academic didn't have, so far from Jimmy Hendrix, all that kind of stuff that 80's decade tried to pull off from popular music...
Again, isn't wrong if you like any kind of music, but still a waste of time if you want to take an expert in gourmet food to McDonald's.
