There are instances where one may be so passionate and over-engaged technically in their field that when shifting to a new opportunity it is difficult to pause and retrieve these "common-sense" communication skills. Thank you for your video. Helped clear a memory block that apparently formed over the years. Really reminded me of the proper way to approach interviewing. Makes me consider seeking an interview coach to help refresh that area of my communication skills. The example responses were well drafted; as an engineer that has interviewed others for software engineering positions in the past, those types of responses would of pique my interests.

As someone who has interviewed dozens of software engineers and given input to managers, this is pretty good. The only that I would be wary of is the "I work too hard, have trouble with work life balance, blah blah" because I'll never believe it if someone says it. However, I would also never ask a candidate what their greatest weakness is.

Interesting. What you described, namely communication and ability to explain technicalities in simple terms is rather something which I would imagine under role of Business Analysts. At least, in my company this was covered by them as it was difficult to expect from SW Devs to have such communication skills that they would be able to represent their products in front of the clients.

    • @CareerVidz
      @CareerVidz 3 года назад +1

Thanks for your feedback and insight. It's always great hearing the experiences of those in the role. I think what you say will be true in many companies, but also for other companies, particularly medium or small business, more diversity in the role can be expected. It's always a plus for employers to hear you have client facing abilities. Thanks for sharing your experience and I hope you enjoyed the video 😊

Got an interview on monday. Granted, it's my first one ever and that I have taken a pretty unorthodox way and I possess a life story, that is vastly different than an overwhelming majority (if not unique) so the deck is not necessarily stacked in my favor on the first try - not everyone have their life going as planned or the way they want to. With that said, I do have some schooling at a university (almost completed bachelors) and I am "here" now, ready so to speak to develop personally. I wanted to be up front with that, but I will take some of the material in this video with me and let you know after monday, how it went. Not everything in this video applies to my experience, as a developer or as life experiences, thus, using some of the content in this video would be lying, although I have heard from more than one person that a good mantra to have is to "fake it, until you make it" - meaning, not lying, but possessing a broad confidence in oneself and one's own abilities. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I'm not really stressed about the interview as such, but I am nervous about freezing up when having to do some "white board coding" which I suspect I will be facing.

    • @CareerVidz
      @CareerVidz 2 года назад +3

You can do it and you don't need to lie, there is plenty to learn from my videos for your answers, just use your own experiences instead. I feel this will really help you: ruclips.net/video/t0u6RgriZRY/видео.html

The first question here is 'why do you want to become a software engineer' implying that one is at the start of the career, trying to penetrate this market and is fairly beginner, aiming for a FIRST job. While the third question's answer is 'I have a lot of software engineering experience'.
Is the candidate at the start of the SE career or does he have already a lot of exp?

Hi! These questions are designed to help people at different levels in the industry. For example, the first question could be re-worded to 'Why do you want to work as a software engineer for our company?' - if someone is changing employers in the same field. It is best to prepare answers for all these questions :)

    • @vikingghost117
      @vikingghost117 4 года назад +8

@@patrick_jane This Covid 19 thing threw a wrench in the company's engine. I passed the first interview but they'll get back to me in a couple weeks from 2 days ago when they want me to take their coding assessment. So far so good! And that's more time to study for this test :D. The advice in this video was directly applicable. I only ended up being asked like not even half the questions. The one thing that actually impressed them the most about me was That I knew pretty much everything about their company, and their vision, and was genuinely excited about their goals, and wanted to be a part of those same goals. I'm pretty sure that answer I gave really sealed the interview. I'm sure all the other answers I gave were good too.
One thing I wish I did better is when they were asking me about my experience with other languages that they needed me to learn that I didn't know already... I with I could go back and not stumble over my words so much. I basically wish I said, "You know I don't know those languages, but I excel at learning new languages, because I really enjoy learning, and I understand that as long as I put in the time, I'll be ready to do any job you need me to do."
I can't remember what I said exactly but it was semi along those lines... but said in a more hideous way... but must've not been too hideous because they said they'll need me to learn basics in BASH, PostgreSQL, and be able to identify some coding errors in a language of my choice, and be able to fix those errors. If I can do that and get 90% or more on each question they have me do then I got the job :D.
It's been non stop studying. I can't thank CareerVids enough, but to put simply THANK YOU! Everything in here is directly applicable to this kind of interview (software developer)
Over all I'd say be yourself. Do some confidence boosting activities before your interview, have solid well thought out answers to all the questions in this video, and you'll kill it! I learned in one of my communications courses at college, some crazy statistic, like 70% of people who do confidence boosting activities outperform in their interviews over those who don't, and typically get the job. For example... for 5 minutes... stand with your legs spread as far apart as you can, and your arms held out as far as you can reach semi upward... and just tell yourself how awesome you are and smile.... guaranteed you'll think you look like a moron, but you'll inevitably laugh at yourself... and then the craziest thing happens... all that silliness goes away and you literally just feel awesome... more yourself... more loose... not stressed out (at all or as much)... If your arms get tired put your hands on your hips and pretend your super man or wonder woman for the girls ;).
No joke... do these things and you'll be a genuine confident version yourself in your interview. Good luck!!!! Kill it!

These are all behavioral questions where "SWE" could be replaced by any occupation. I was looking for more technical insight (i.e. design patterns, algorithms, et cetera) directly related to SWE and not generic behavioral questions and answers.

I got 2 questions for Software Engineer:
    Q. What is your program language Strength?
    Q. What is your program language Weaknesses?
and 2 questions for application support:
    Q. What is your technical Strength?
    Q. What is your technical Weaknesses?
    May I have your advice?

    • @CareerVidz
      @CareerVidz 3 года назад +2

For both of the strength questions, it should be easy to know what your strength is here and only you will know as the software you use will be different from others. For the weakness, again, I think being honest here is best and only you will know what your weakness is, but always turn it into a positive, is your program language weakness C# as you have instead focussed and honed your skills all on Java, HTML, CSS etc. which are better suited for the roles you are applying too etc. I hope that makes sense and helps 👍

Some of these were helpful. But for the love of god please do not say your biggest weakness is work/life balance. Take the time to think of an actual area where you could improve, and talk about what you're already doing about it.
To think that that is a clever response is to basically call your interviewer a moron.

don't interviewers get tired of this stuff? if i was on the other side of the desk I'd roll my eyes and probably write someone off immediately if they were giving these teacher's pet answers.
"omg yes sir my weakness is that i just love giving up my weekend to do extra work and take on more stress, I'm addicted to generating a return on investment for the company which i won't see any of myself!"
yikes. I'd rather hire someone who said "you know what, i do this to pay for rent and food. idgaf what it is, just give me the work and I'll make sure it's done"

SOFTWARE ENGINEER Interview Questions & TOP SCORING ANSWERS!
Tell me about yourself and why you want to become a Software Engineer?
TIP: In your answer to this interview question, provide a list of skills and qualities you possess that will enable you to perform to a high standard in the role of a Software Engineer.
"Before applying for this software engineer role with your company, I spent time reading the job description and the person specification. I wanted to make sure I was both properly qualified for the role, and that I also had the appropriate experience and skills to help drive the company forward.
I am hard working, driven, technically astute and someone who will work closely with people within your organization to achieve your commercial and financial objectives.
I want to be a software engineer simply because it is a role that I am extremely passionate about, and also one I get immense job satisfaction from, especially when I get to see first-hand the positive contribution my work makes to the organization I am working for.
If you hire me as your software engineer, I will not only work hard to deliver consistent positive results, but I will also use my developing, researching, analytical and technical skills to help the company continually thrive and develop.”
Why do you want to work for our company as a Software Engineer?
TIP: Show the interviewer you have conducted some research into their organization. Be complimentary in your answer, and talk about what makes their company unique.
"For me, the company I work for is very important. I believe that, to be able to perform your duties and responsibilities as a software engineer competently, you need the support of your employer, and you also need to work with like-minded people who are all working towards a common goal.
During my research into your organization, it soon became apparent that you are not only a leader within the industry, but you also continually look for ways to grow and develop.
You also clearly hire some of the best people available, and this means l'II be working with other professionals who all genuinely care about the work they produce.
1 am someone who is ambitious: I don't like to sit back and just do the bare minimum, and if you hire me, I feel confident you will be impressed with my work values, ethics and high standards.”
How would you deal with a member of your team who disagreed with the work you carried out as a Software Engineer?
TIP: This interview question is subtly assessing your teamworking capabilities. Do you put the needs of your team and the organization first, or are you more concerned about your own reputation and your competence?
"I have a lot of experience as a Software Engineer, and I feel the work I produce is to a very high standard. Having said that, I am also aware that when I do work as part of a team, it is important to listen to other people as they may have valid contributions to make.
On that basis, I would certainly be open to listening to why they felt the work I was carrying out could be altered or improved.
At the end of the day, we are all working for the same organization, and if it means changing the way I do things for the benefit of the team goal, I will certainly do that."
In your opinion, what are the skills and qualities needed to be a Software Engineer?
TIP: This software engineer interview question is clearly assessing your understanding of the role. The best way to answer this question is to give them a definitive list of the skills and qualities needed?
"Whilst there are numerous skills and qualities needed, there are 9 in particular that are essential to becoming an effective Software Engineer.
In no particular order, these are TECHNICAL COMPETENCE, COMMUNICATION and INTERPERSONAL SKILLS whilst dealing with clients and internal team members, EXCEPTIONAL ORGANIZATIONAL AND PLANNING capabilities, a level of COMMERCIAL AWARENESS, and also an understanding of how important it is to MAINTAIN COMPETENCE in your role through professional development.
You also need an ability to EXPLAIN TECHNICAL INFORMATION in a simple and concise manner so people understand it. an AWARENES OF CURRENT ISSUES impacting the industry you are working in, and also strong ANALYTICAL and ATTENTION TO DETAIL skills”
Tell me a time when you worked as part of a team to solve a complex task?
TIP: This is a behavioral type interview question, and as such, I recommend you use the STAR technique to create your answer?
SITUATION: I was part of a multi-agency project building a software application for an important client. Towards the end of the project, we encountered a number of bugs and problems with the software application, and time was against us to get everything fixed before the official handover date.
TASK: I felt it was my responsibility to come up with a solution to get the issues fixed. I stayed behind late that evening with two other experienced team members to come up with a plan that would ensure the bugs were not only fully rectified, but that a support system was in place to respond to any future issues if they were to arise, post handover.
ACTION: We started off by CREATING A LIST of all bugs and issues. We then attempted to RECREATE EACH BUG so that we could assess what was causing the issue.
We managed to recreate all of the bugs and it was then my task to
CREATE A TIMESCALE for rectifying and testing each issue. Once we had a PLAN IN PLACE, we could then allocate tasks to team members based on their area of technical competence the following morning.
RESULT: By creating a plan of action, and by working closely together as a team, we were able to tap into the combined team expertise and competence to not only provide a time-sensitive solution to the problem, but to also implement a support mechanism for our client.
Tell me how you would handle the stress and pressure of being a Software Engineer?
TIP: When answering this software engineer interview question, show you already have a plan in place for dealing with the stress and pressure of the role.
"I think as a software engineer, you have to realise that stress and pressure is all part of the role. And in actual fact, I feel I tend to perform better when I am up against it and there is a definitive timeframe to work towards.
I manage stress in three ways. First and foremost, I ensure I plan my work well in advance, so I know what I need to do, and by what deadline. By having a plan in place, it means I work more efficiently and I can decide which tasks need my attention first.
The second way I handle stress and pressure, is to make sure I work closely with other members of the team, and that communication is a constant theme throughout the day.
Finally, I handle stress and pressure by making sure I dedicate some time each week to keeping up-to-date with developments from within the industry. This gives me the confidence in my role as a Software Engineer, and it also eliminates any unwelcome surprises when updates do come out or changes within the industry are released."
    What's your biggest weakness?
TIP: If any software engineer interview question is going to catch you out, it's this one! The issue is, we have to give a weakness, but we do not want to give a weakness that is needed to be a competent and professional software engineer.
"We all have weaknesses, and I know my own is the fact I find it really hard to strike a healthy work-life balance.
I love my job as a software engineer, and even when I am not at work, I am usually spending time with computer systems or developing additional skills and qualities so I continue to grow in the role, much to the dissatisfaction of my partner!
This is an area I have been working to improve upon, and I am trying to spend more time relaxing with my family so I can then maintain optimum energy levels when I am at work.
Conversely. one of my strengths is the fact I am always prepared to listen to feedback. and I do genuinely want to improve and develop as a person on both a personal and a professional level "
    What are your salary expectations?
TIP: Again, this is a tricky interview question to answer - one the one hand, we don't want to go in with an unrealistic salary expectation, but on the other, we don't want to devalue ourselves. Your answer has to offer a WIN-WIN situation.
"I have conducted some research prior to attending the interview on what I feel would be a fair salary for this position.
The average salary for a software engineer in this industry is $90,000 to $110,000. Whilst I do feel I am worth the higher salary band, I understand you don't know me, and I need to prove to you my worth.
On that basis, I would feel comfortable with a salary of $102,000 and I feel you will see a positive return on your investment at this level if your hire me."
QUESTIONS TO ASK IN YOUR SOFTWARE ENGINEER INTERVIEW
    Q. What has frustrated you about software engineers you have employed in the past?
    Q. What are the plans for the company over the next 5 to 10 years and how could I help you to achieve them?
    Q. What's the first thing you would like me to concentrate on in this role?
