What's up man! Thanks for watching. My feeling is that any 25 pin SCSI cable will do.I don't think it's overkill, especially if it's the only thing that you can get your hands on at the moment.
What''s up man! I haven't had any problems formatting my zip disk but you do have to have the operating system on floppy disk inserted in the floppy drive. That's where the O.S is copied from to the zip drive. Also if the ASR-10 isn't recognizing the drive make sure that the SCSI id's on the drive and the ASR-10 are the same. Hope this helps, TDS
Just relearned the whole SCSI, Zip/Jaz drive world. Living in remote Vermont, you pay to have things like this shipped to you because items like this just aren't common. In my desperation I put a Wanted add on Craigslist & ended up with a basically "new" Jaz drive for the price of fuel (cost to go get it). Lesson, sometimes people have things & just don't list them because it isn't worth the hassle... My question? Will a Jaz work on an ASR/EPS? I ran a Zip on my ASR88, years ago. Worked great. Id like to get another ASR, eventually. I'm wondering if I should keep my eyes peeled for another Jaz drive or If a Zip is my only option? Keep up the great work! Hyde
nice video, my zip iomega dont have the termination et scsi id bouttons behind the drive, so it dont work with my asr-10, could i find the same zip as this video on the net ? thanks .
Hello, I have a question regarding this topic. I have got an EPS 16+ with scsi port and there is a ram expansion connected, but the expansion does not have the possibility to connect another scsi device like a zip drive. How is that fixed? Do I have to search for another version of the ram expansion? Thanx!
What's up man!!! That's a really good question. The RAM expansion is the actual enclosure for the SCSI card which was often sold separately. In order install the SCSI card you'll need to open up the RAM expansion and seat the SCSI card in thee enclosure. This video will give you an idea of what it looks like. ruclips.net/video/eftJHYO0Sxk/видео.html Hope this helps! TDS www.thedaydreamsound.com
I see. Well, I've ruled pretty much everything else out and have concluded that I'm probably dealing with a bad zip drive. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the issue isn't with my SCSI board itself!! Thanks for your help, and keep up the cool vids!
Hey DDS! Love your videos. I am buying an Iomega Zip 100 for my ASR-10 and am wondering, will any old db 25 male to db 25 male cable work, or do I need to find a high-quality shielded cable specifically made for SCSI? I've been able to track down industrial, shielded db 25 cables but am wondering whether these will even work, and conversely, whether these are overkill. Any thoughts?
I've had nothing but nightmares using my eps16 and scsi. I have tried multiple Zip100 drives. I have tried Syquest EzFlyer drives, and I've also tried an old SCSI hard drive. All of them are properly terminated, and set to the proper SCSI ID. All of them are sketchy. I can format the disks, use them for a while, save sounds, etc. After using the sampler for a while (saving sounds etc), the eps16 gives up, and freezes when trying to save sounds. It's like the drive goes to sleep, and it's not able to find it again. I love the sound of my EPs16, but I'm honestly about to give up, and live with floppies (which work 100% of the time).
+jabberwalky What's up man! I hear you on that! The EPS16+ can be a very sketchy sampler depending on what shape it's in. In saying that, some versions of the EPS16+ are not compatible with a zip drive.
Can I add a note. I had a ZIP100 on my EPS16+ working fine, then a few years later the drive unexpectedly wouldn't see it!? I had to do the scsi term power mod (on a switch) which restored operation. I'm not quite sure what changed to stop the ZIP from working, however I tend to suspect the ZIP not the EPS, as I have being using it with other systems so it might have got damaged.
What's up Daydream Sounds. Great vid as always man. So I'm familiar with using sczi with my MPC2000 ( not xl). I picked up an Eps16+ a few years back, is it safe to say that one needs to hook up a sczi to the Eps in order to do any saving/Loading of music and sounds composed just like with the MPC2000? Also have you ever midi'd the MPC to the EPS amd used in sync? Thanks. Peace.
What's up! You could use floppies for saving. That's my preference but if you want to save large files SCSI would be the way to go. I have midi'd the MPC & EPS it's a great combination!
Simon Clements-Hawes What's up man! The internal zip drive's terminator works perfectly. But that depends on the scsi expander you have. Unfortunately some of the original Ensoniq expanders don't work with a zip drive at all.
Thanks for those informativ videos sir! Just bought the eps16+ and i have question u might know the answer to. Is there a external CD-ROM Driver thats compatible wirh the eps16+?
What's up Mobetter X!!!!!! You're welcome man!!!! Congrats on picking up a EPS 16+!!!! You'lll need an old SCSI CD Rom drive. They're probably pretty cheap used these days.
Hi! I just got an iomega zip100 drive. (SCSI) for my MPC3000. But whenever i power the zip drive it blinks. And nothing happens. Also, the zip disc will not eject. so i have to manually extract the disc by putting a paperclip thingy in the back. sorry for my bad english
What's up Mink!!!! Thanks for reaching out! Congrats on picking up your EPS16+!!!! To remove the SCSI card you're going to have to open it up. Our review video will help a bit. ruclips.net/video/ba3xfn3UJD8/видео.html
jaime garza What's up man! In that case the only way around is to get another 16+ with a floppy or buy some Ensoniq EPS16+ preformatted zipdisks from somewhere. It's one of the downsides to having an internal zip drive or a broken floppy drive.
Thanks for your response! Just an update: I'm having trouble getting my ASR10 to recognize my iomega 100mb zip drive (when I try to format the zip drive or change storage device I get the "Disk Not Responding" error). I think my problem might be that the ASR10 is unable to recognize the unformatted disk in the drive. I've also heard that the "FORMAT SCSI DEVICE" command doesn't work with newer zip disks. Just wondering, are you able to format zip disks with your ASR10?
I’m not able to get the Zip working on my ASR10 & it’s driving me bonkers.. I can occasionally get it to see the Zip drive, and begin formatting, but it ultimately fails & I can’t even get any of the Zip drives that I own to see that disk anymore, or reformat it. (Tried on XP & OSX & OS9.2.2 machines, and Akai S2000).. Also tried Ensoniq File System Tools program to format it from XP, but the ASR doesn’t see the disk that way either. )-;
Zip Model Z250S works great with EPS-16Plus using both 100 and 250 MB disks. Its terminators are pretty cheap and that is a BIG problem for the EPS 16Plus as if there is no termination, it won't see the drive. but the ZIP Z250S no problem whatsoever...The way to tell the difference is it has a rounder, more 'soap bar' shaped body than the Z100S2 (shown in above video. Use SCSI 25 pin cables, NOT DB-25 Audio cables. Both look same, but audio DB-25 won't work. SCSI 25 pin cable grey/cream color
Actually, TDS is incorrect in that SCSI ID';s need to be same on both devices; the SCSI ID's need to be different. The EPS 16 SCSI Manual states on page 6 "SET THE SCSI ill OF YOUR DRIVE TO ANY NUMBER (0 to 6) EXCEPT3f The ill of your SCSI drive must be different from that of the EPS-16 PLUS. If. it isn't, the EPS-16 PLUS will never see it."
For anyone interested in running a Zip drive, I’ve been in & out of a few problems with them to learn a few things. 1st, you need to do the scsi mod on the Ensoniq scsi circuit board to get it to run properly. Otherwise you will run into errors. 2nd, I suggest running OS from your floppy. The reason being, if you are transferring files from/to another EPS16 or ASR & the OS configuration doesn’t match 100%, it can cause errors on the Zip OS & you’ll get errors on your disk (or the click of death) & you wont be able to properly use that disk anymore. Took me a while to figure this one out but, it only takes a few seconds to load OS from floppy. Then you are free to move that Zip disk around anywhere you like.
+Jermaine Wright What's up man! Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately the EPS16+ SCSI port was an optional addition that is no longer in production. Sometimes this expansion option pops up on Ebay but it's very rare. It's almost easier to buy a used EPS16+ with the SCSI option already installed.
Might I suggest NOT using the Zip 100 Model S2 ( model number denoted near power plug is Z100S2) Their internal terminator goes bad fast. Once it won't terminate, the EPS-16 Plus will not see it. Another Alternative is the Syquest Syjet (Model SYJET1SE) 1.5 Gig. I got mine to work but it takes FOREVER to format the disk. One of my disks keeps saying 'disk error' after the EPS flashes *formatting* for about a half hour. Other Syquest disk formatted fine. I found BEST unit to use is ZiP 250 Model
There's nothing wrong with SCSI & Zip drives. Yea they're obsolescent, but not obsolete. They're just tools with which to do a job. I use an Iomega 100 & an HP laptop (Pentium 3, 800mhz w/300mb RAM & best off all, an SCSI port!) I bought in 2000. It's the only way I can load patches & combs (& occasionally, samples) onto my Korg Triton Pro X. Sure I could buy USB this or that, but why? To save a few seconds of load time? Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? Cool stuff BTW. ;-)
Thanks again. You are a legend. It super hard to find tutorials on these old samplers in this day and age
I agree. I still prefer zip drives. They're like a master key for the majority of older equipment.
What's up man!
Thanks for watching. My feeling is that any 25 pin SCSI cable will do.I don't think it's overkill, especially if it's the only thing that you can get your hands on at the moment.
You're welcome! The 16+ let's you format the SCSI drive but you have to have the floppy drive active as it uses it to copy the OS to the SCSI drive.
What''s up man!
