Babagana Kingibe is an honorable man. He has demonstrated honesty in this interview. I am glad to have watched this interview. Well done NTA.
Wonderful! The first time I have watched the NTA interview part 1 and 2 interview of Ambassador Kingibe. I was amazed to find a man that had been so badly vilified, give a very good first hand account of the events so eloquently. He came across as a vastly experienced civil servant and diplomat. He would have been a more competent leader in government than anyone I can think of now. God bless him.

Very well articulated view of the true nature of the events that surrounded the June 12 annulment and the aftermath. In life, you cant see beyond what you don't understand, at least now those who were not in the know now have a candid account on what really happened from the mouth of one of the major actors, now you know. No more false and daft speculations, no more innuendos, that is what kills Nigeria and Nigerians. Thank you ABK.
For me, this is one of the few men I have listened to among our many past leaders, that made a lot of sense. Humble enough to admit where he was wrong. Am truly inspired. Not all our past leaders where disaster😅

The good thing about this interview is, he is giving names and many of the protagonists are still alive. When people are stating the facts, it is easy to piece the missing pieces of history together. Many things make sense now regarding what happened before and after the June 12 annulment. This interview confirmed what many of us had suspected from the start. It was Abiola's naiveness as a politician and his relationship with the military that killed June 12. How could a presidential candidate go into bed with the leader of the Junta to inform him of his choice for the vice president before announcing who his presidential candidate would be? Obviously, the military wanted Atiku as Abiola's vice to protect their interest but once he went for Kingibe his chances were numbered. Abiola thought that Babangida and Abacha were his friends and that he could talk them into handing the presidency to him, even after they had annulled it themselves. He conspired with Abacha to take over from Shonekan with the naiveness again that Abacha would also hand power to him. He was the one that nominated the likes ofJakande into the Abacha's government thinking they would protect his mandate from the inside. But Jakande was vilified and called names as a result, and many of them kept quiet. He was outsmarted by Abacha. Who would have thought that the Igbos in the SDP spoke out against cooperating with Abacha, but when they saw what was happening and the handwriting on the wall, they wisely told the Yorubas that this was their fight because they could see that the betrayal was much more from the home front of the South Westerner. Due to tribal loyalty, many will watch this and still believe what they wanted to believe because it did not suit their original romantic narrative of June 12.
It's unfortunate that all you wanted to achieve in this your senseless epistle is to exonerate the igbos for their betrayals and then indict Abuola and Yorubas. Pls state one Yoruba man mentioned here by Kingibe that betrayed Abiola. Igbos are always betrayals right from the times of Nnamdi Azikwe to Ojukwu. Anything that doesn't favor igbos is always frustrated by them. Did you ask what the role of your kinsman called Arthur Nzeribe in June 12 annulment? @@amumejitaiwo4813 Nothing to do with exonerating Igbos. I based my analogy on what Kingibe had said. It was you reading into it as exonerating Igbos. Like I had said previously, many of the characters that Kingibe mentioned were still alive at the time of this interview.

It all sound real but I personally find it very difficult to believe that someone was pencilled to be a minister without even a courtesy of consultation against a government he's part of. Again, why accept such nomination knowing fully well the consequences? The fact that he admitted MKO felt betrayed by that acceptance even casts more suspicion on the whole move.
RIP poor guy, he might have made his own mistakes but certainly didn't deserve how it ended for him.

It was not difficult to believe. Under the military regime, a lot of things happen that are beyond believe.
Remember this was a Junta government. They don't do things by consultation. It reminded me how they said Asaba was made the Delta State capital instead of Warri by IBB at the last minute. In those days, someone could become a minister, commissioner or even a military governor without being told, until it is announced and then a car would pull outside your house to take you to Abuja or to the state capital to be sworn-in and start work immediately. If refused, you are marked immediately as an enemy.
After the two interviews with ABK, my views on him changed. He was a fine diplomat tilldate. The press in nigeria made him look like judace iscariot becos of june 12 palava. But he wasnt.
Several thing stands him out, he was a kind man gentleman, a democrat, a fine diplomat and experienced civil servant.
Well am versed to my good friend to another good friend ot mine from Biu, Bornu state whom we both attended ABU zaria together, in the early 1980s and he is in person of Ahmadu Betara. He had shared some of these political intrigues with me be4 now.
Although the way they saw nigeria issues is different from the way we see it in the western nigeria.
We re all victims of military govt. Most of Nigeria's problems today were fermented by these undemocratic bunch of military men.
They were rouges in uniform and all of them in AFC felt they could become head of state by guns.
Am glad they been all been confined to their army barracks.

Abiola himself knew he’s the betrayal. And he Abiola expressed it to him in parable.
Abiola was just mistaken to keep rolling with him because he thought he’s unavoidable and that he still needed him in certain areas of politics.
If you think critically on everything he’s said from his own mouth, you will know that he’s the real traitor that was used right from the beginning to annul June 12 and to kill Abiola.
But if you let his cool and smiling face fool you, then you are gullible.
Baba Gana Kingibe should please not retire from active politics. He is still very useful and experienced to manage the affairs of this country

Because he has debunked the notion of your preconceived idea of what happened. Many of the later June 12 disciples were indeed behind Abacha overthrowing Shonekan believing that Abacha would have them over power. How naive.

So the only response was that he never saw Abiola again until Abiola was dead. Because his conscience won’t let him...
He is a smooth lier who thinks he knows how to avoid important questions or hide the truth.
You know you cannot live forever.
Did you actually watch the interview? He saw him just before he took his last breath. Obviously, those in the know like the Abiola family do not think like you, if not what are they doing in his house? What did he lie about? He mentioned names, places and dates and some of these people are still alive and no one has refuted his side of the story. We don't like the truth unless it suits our preconceived narratives. The fact is clear - it was the South West that killed Abiola's mandate, with Abiola himself taking the lead, out of pure naiveness of trusting the northern military boys with a different agenda.
Abiola trusted the military so much but didn't know how much he was hated by them.
I don't think they hate him. But the reality then is that the Northern military-political establishment does not joke with power, even if it means destroying a friendship. As I mentioned earlier, once Abiola substituted Atiku (military inside man) with Kingibe, his chances of succeeding IBB then was numbered
The military leaders may have had well intention to 'plant' a model of democratic system. However, it'd have been better if Kingibe had been the candidate not Abiola.
What’s wrong with Abiola
Great insight gleaned from this revelations by Babagana K.
It is unfortunate, Abiola made some silly mistakes and also attached himself to the wrong people, is so obvious he did lack political idealogy... So with this fact, we can clearly point to the tractor.
So you watch one side of the story and believe everything without a recourse to the other side? Kingibe said he didnt lobby to be vice president and you believe him? That's certainly untrue because multiple camps including Kingibe's lobbied a lot for the position. A man paints a picture like he was a saint and MKO did many wrongs and find him easily believable?
1. Abiola and even the most foolish person would understand that you were the traitor the moment you traveled out of the country without Abiola’s knowledge at that critical period of time. Meanwhile, Abiola didn’t know Kingibe was out of the country, meaning that Kingibe traveled without informing Abiola. And the statement Abiola made to him that “ eye o so feye pe oko nbo” has revealed that Abiola already knew that you were a sellout.
2. But before Abiola would realize that you were out of the country, when he was tipped off and he wanted to run away to London, he made sure that he contacted you and your family, not knowing that you had first run away without telling Abiola.
When the military government realized that Abiola had run away before they got to him and that he would pose a bigger threat outside the country based on his influence, you were told to come back to Nigeria and appear to his family because that’s the only way to be able to get Abiola to confirm that you were in Nigeria and nothing happened to you. You were used as bait to set him up. You remember that you didn’t even tell him that you were traveling out of the country when you were running away, why then were you coming back from your trip to tell Abiola and his family that you were coming back from a trip that he didn’t even know you went to? Because it was believed that if Abiola’ saw that nothing happened to you he too would be comfortable to come back to Nigeria. Which was exactly what happened.
3. This shows that you actually planned everything right from the beginning and were having firsthand information from the then military government .
4. You again went to London to smooth- talked Abiola and told him that there’s no cause for alarm knowing fully well that Abiola was going to be arrested if he could come back.
You were used to set Abiola up to come back to Nigeria for the arrest.
5. You fought alongside Abacha and the military to oust the interim Government and convinced Abiola that it’s a good development for his mandates.
6. How would someone be nominated for ministerial appointment when the appointee didn’t see that you were interested?
7. Any other person could have taken appointments from the military government that you were being hopeful would restore your mandate, but not both of you who spearheaded the people’s struggles for June 12, 1993 elections. Not even at Abiola’s support of such ideas should you take it.
8. You took the appointment anyway even despite the fact that Abiola won’t nominate you.
9. You couldn’t even went to see Abiola while in detention until the day Abiola died because your conscience won’t allow you to go and face him.
Smh. Nigerians are not fool.

If you believe whatever Kingibe said in this interview regarding the June 12 struggle, then you can believe anything. The Igbo group went outside to confer among themselves leaving the rest of the people including Kingibe inside the room, yet Kingibe knew what the Igbo group discussed. This Kingibe is a pathological liar and a pathetic traitor of the first grade. He sold out June 12 and spearheaded the betrayal of late Bashorun MKO Abiola.
@@adebisifunmilola4663 oh so he kingibe was the first to leave the country and that was why MKO left that parable message for him with his wife for him?? He made sure not to say that, instead he claimed that MKO didn’t tell him about leaving , that MKO claimed that he MKO wanted to inform him kingibe but his phone didn’t go through, hence he left the message with the kingibe’s wife. A Vice President elect and president in waiting swapped his potential no 2 role for a ministerial (appointed and serving at the pleasure of his boss) role 🤷🏾♂️.
You have issues with the vice presidential candidate but had no such issues with the presidential candidate himself who welcomed Abacha with an open arm, went to the State House to congratulate him and then nominated a few loyalists into Abacha's cabinet or the actions of the likes of Bolaji Akinyemi that gives legitimacy to Abacha. Are you guys for real?
Well spoken and a command of English language. He uses it to perfectly absolve himself ot most blane and responsibility. A true politican, a terrible character. Based solely on hus words.

I feel sorry for Lateef Jakande. He was insulted for serving in the Abacha's government not knowing that Abiola himself nominated him and begged him to accept the job.
@@veelawrence4285the visit was not to congratulate abacha, abacha invited Abiola because there was rampage in the country because Abiola declared himself as the president right before general babangida handed over to abacha and that protest intensify when abacha took over.

I am a huge supporter of June 12 and Abiola's mandate till this minute but that does not blind me to the truth that Abiola miscalculated, thinking this Northern military establishment will still be his friend when it comes to power at the time.
Much respect to Isola Filani and Tokunbo Afikuyomi, both mentioned by Kingibe. Same Afikuyomi stood firm for Tinubu too, there is some consistency there.
These guys need to write this story in full. Part of the problem with this country is that the full story of these important issues in our history is not been documented for posterity.
Kingibe, IBB, Atiku, Gwarzo, Tinubu and Doyin Abiola and those who knew what happened should please write before they all die
Don't mind them. I totally believed Kingibe. I had read a piece where Commodore Kalu mentioned that he personally opposed any cooperation with Abacha by the SDP and said something similar to what Kingibe was saying and Ebitu Ukiwe too had said something similar to the effect that the military played on Abiola's political naiveness.
