  • Continuing with one of my favourite elements of Odissi - another Odissi walking pattern.
This walk at 'normal' speed is quite a simple one, just stepping one foot in front of the other, but with Odissi styling!. We again move from prushta dhanu pada, where the foot is behind and the heel pulled off the floor, and take our foot at a slightly elevated position from the floor around and place it in front of our weight carrying leg. A nice point to the toe as we bring it round can bring a lovely quality to the movement (note to self - improve flexibility of foot!).
As always with Odissi, we lead the walk grounding into the earth with our heels, and our hips and knees focusing on turning out to maintain the diamond negative space between our legs.
The foot that is stepping through is placed on the same line that the stable foot is pointing (about a 45 degree diagonal out), and about one foot (your actual foot!) distance in front. After you have placed the heel, twist your foot around to point in and transfer the weight across.
I've used 3 speeds here in an attempt at clarity, though the first speed is super slow!
    Enjoy and happy practising!

There is no mistake, only the basic single step walk demonstrated at slower speeds before the final 'normal' pace. Please consider your own understanding of the dance form before making unconsidered comments like this.
