  • One of the most popular courses in the OMSCS program at Georgia Tech is CS6515 - Intro to Graduate Algorithms. This course is required for almost every specialization in OMSCS and that means almost every student within OMSCS will have to take it. After releasing my final review on the course, I got a few comments about how I did in the course and what tips I had for anyone taking the course so I wanted to give 10 tips on how to get an A+ in CS6515 within the OMSCS program.

As I said in the video, one of the best ways to study for each exam was to look over the HW and also make sure to understand the Wikidot questions for that section. Check out the Wikidot here:

Yo Chris. Haven't started my OMSCS journey yet (that's in Jan), but this video will serve me well when I take CS6515. Thanks for making it!

GA was the most stressful class on my entire OMSCS course.

For me, Computer Vision's final project was the most stressful but I think GA was the most unnecessarily stressful.
      When did you take it?

Hi Chris! I’ve found your videos very helpful! I have a specific questions I have not seen you address though. I am looking to join OMSCS as a Mechanical Engineer as well. I’ve almost finished all of the prereq MOOC courses Georgia tech offers for the program and will be applying this spring. Do you have any recommendations as a mechanical engineering yourself for the application or transitioning into the program?

I actually talk about this a bit in my first few video:
      ruclips.net/video/T3jyD3oqmW4/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/Ky0QN7KEX-E/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/XL0Ruja-Vag/видео.html
I also share my GitHub where I have the application material I used to get into the program:
      github.com/chrisJ7/ComputerGuyChris
From what I have seen, the thing GT will care most about in your application will be your GPA for ME and the amount of programming experience you have (the masters is very programming heavy so make sure you know what youre doing).
Hopefully, my videos have given you some insight into what to expect and which classes might be good to start with. Best of luck!

Thanks chris , but in this semester 69% is weightage of the exams. And only scoring good on exam 1 will get you 23% assuming you get 10% out of 14%(hw, coding, project) still it will be around 30%. So atleast 2 exams need to be scored great in my opinion. Any feedback on this?

Hi Chris. You mentioned in the video that your computer shut down when you took the first exam. I am wondering if you could please give us a video talking about how the proctoring system works for OMSCS exams. I took an exam with edX with its proctoring system, which is a great pain in the neck (the system even yelled at me for my GPU). Particular questions are like: are books and/or multiple monitors allowed on the work surface; what are allowed in the room; what software needs to be uninstalled to pass the system check, ..etc. Really want to hear your experience about this topic. A tons of thanks!

Yeah, it was very frustrating when my computer shut down but thankfully, I was still able to do great in the class.
To answer your question, it depends on the class as to what is allowed. Some classes allow monitors, study material, and open web and some do not. If not allowed, the proctoring software, called HonorLock (which is a plug in you need to install) will not let you move forward. Before starting an exam, you will have to run a system check to make sure your system is good enough to run the proctoring software, then you will have to take a picture of yourself, a picture of your ID/drivers license, and a full room scan. Some classes are more intense about the room scan like CS6515 which is very demanding about it. After all checks are done, you will accept to be recorded while taking the exam and start the exam with the camera watching you. When you submit your exam, the proctored video is submitted with it.
I will look into making a full video on this but I am not sure how much information and screen shots I will be able to get so I wanted to give you this explanation as well.

Exams are now 69%, HWs 14%, Coding Projects and Quizzes 7% each, and 3% easy points for Logistics Quizzes.

So your saying you completely blew one of the written questions and still managed to get an A? Did you have to take the final to make up for Test 2? This class has given me so much stress and anxiety so far.

I bombed the written on exam 3 and didn't need to take final (only needed 15 points on exam 3). Averaged 46/60 on first two, 90% on hws, 100% on coding projects, 80% on quizzes. Relatively easy B but not an easy A.
