  • Is North Carolina BBQ the best in the World? When we made our video: An Italian Tries BBQ for the First Time and we said how much we loved Tennessee BBQ, so many of you said we HAD to go to North Carolina for the best BBQ in the World. While we still need to try Texas BBQ, we found ourselves in Charlotte, NC and knew we had to take the opportunity to rate the pulled pork, vinegar sauce, brisket, ribs, collard greens and all of the other sides. Who do you thinks makes the best BBQ? Let us know in the comments what we should try next!

    North Carolinian here, and Charlotte is not the place to go for bbq. For traditional Lexington style, you can either go directly to Lexington, NC or any other smaller city in western NC. For eastern style, anyplace east of Raleigh is a safe bet.

      @cbirdman not at all, i live in NC, been to BBQ places that were good and some that are bad, just because they are all vinegar based doesnt mean they are remotely the same, it wasnt the vinegar that turned them off, she said the vinegar sauce elevated it

    • @cbirdman
      @cbirdman 6 months ago +2

      @Williewc420 Vinegar is very polarizing and people either like or they don’t. And the place they went to was recommended by many people from NC, so I doubt it was “bad” place. Maybe not the best, but enough to get a feel for how it is supposed to taste.
      I live on the border of NC and TN and have had both from the best places you can find. I’m not a fan of the NC sauce.

      @walterhill9642 NC BBQ was not invented in Lexington. NC BBq comes from the cooking methods of slaves. The style of BBQ famous in NC can be traced back specifically to slaves in the Wilmington area. Know your History.

      I was thinking this while watching. When it comes to good eating anywhere in the world, but especially in the US, chains are not where it's at! Each region in the US, and each locale within that region, has its own specialty foods. If you want the good eating you've got to find the good, stand alone places the locals know and love. In that way the US is no different from Italy!

  • @j.w.spears5783
    @j.w.spears5783 7 months ago +170

    If you’re in North Carolina and the restaurant says pulled pork, then you are not eating authentic “Carolina Bbq.” All of the good restaurants just call it barbecue. You usually order a large or small barbecue plate. Good eastern BBq already has vinegar added while it is being chopped up. Don’t eat at a chain and think it represents NC eastern barbecue, it does not at all.

      Midwood Smokehouse is not a chain, although they do have several locations around Charlotte. Their BBQ is Lexington Style but not the same as Lexington BBQ. I prefer MAC's Speedshop to Midwood Smokehouse. And prefer both over Eastern NC style, which is pure vinegar based. Although I've had good BBQ across the state.

      Rock Store BBQ is the best BBQ around the Charlotte area imo. Smokehouse is a close second. There are a few good BBQ places. Avoid Sonny's. That's not BBQ. Lexington does have the best however. I prefer pulled pork to chopped but that's me. Chopped just seems dry to me. Yes, I'm from NC. Born and raised.

    There's two main styles of NC BBQ. Eastern style is vinegar/pepper flake based sauce. Western brings in the tomato influence. For good, old school Eastern style you have to get whole hog. All the different cuts of the pig, chopped, shredded, and blended together. Including the skin which crisps up into cracklin' as it's cooked. You get a blend of both flavors and textures that holds up to the vinegar forward flavor of the sauce. Sam Jones BBQ is a top notch example of the style.

    Native North Carolinian here too. If the BBQ place you went to didn't look like a grungy hole in the wall that you might get stabbed in, it's probably not the best place around. Its funny but true lol. I don't think y'all did yourself justice with whatever place you picked.
    For example, Backyard BBQ Pit in Durham, NC is a brick building with no central AC, crayon on the walls, and a few ceiling fans and that place is legit. So, so good. Their smoker is just behind the building and you can see smoke billowing up if they're cooking when you visit. If you go there during the lunch rush, the line is literally out the door.
    OR find a local that has experience cooking BBQ, that's probably the best you'll eat. My Husband's family has 3 large smokers out on their farm in eastern NC; they start cooking at 4 or 5 am and it cooks all day. That is the best BBQ you'll ever eat, seriously.
    PLEASE find a good place in Eastern NC for a second try, I think you'll be pretty surprised.

      👍👍 I've had BBQ all over the state and the best places were the little local restaurants. Back in the 70's, they were pretty common. There were several in my area. My favorite was Mike Smith's BBQ, a few miles outside of Wendell, between Poole Road and Eagle Rock. At lunch time the parking lot would be full, with a bunch of Highway Patrol and Sheriff cars parked in the parking lot on their lunch break. Me and my buddies would ride our dirt bikes there sometimes during lunch break, when we were helping folks barn tobacco in the area. Mike used hickory wood, which we'd cut and split for him several times a year, so we usually got to eat for free.

    I was born & raised in Georgia where I've eaten nothing but pulled pork bbq. I've also had bbq in Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Every state had their own twist on the sauces & how they cooked the pork, but all-in-all the pulled pork was good in those states. I love the bbq sauce on the sweeter side. Four years ago we moved to the Austin, TX area for my husband's job. Out here it's all about the brisket which honestly I'd never had. I had read that Texas is #1 for their bbq brisket so obviously I had to give it a try. Guys, let me tell you - it's an experience to behold. It's the BEST!! Better than pulled pork. On a trip back home to Georgia, I tried brisket at a local bbq place and it did not even come close to the quality of the Texas brisket. Jessi & Alessio, I hope you can make a trip out to Texas and give it a try. They also have hand made sausage at these bbq restaurants but I've tried it only once and it was good, too. Texas definitely knows what they're doing when it comes to brisket. But I don't want to leave out my home state. Georgia definitely has its share of delicious bbq places with delicious and juicy ribs & pulled pork.

I definitely agree with most of the comments here though. Ranking mom and pop restaurant in TN VS bigger restaurant in NC. Y'all may have had garbage BBQ. I'm not sure where y'all were and i've probably never tried it so i'm not going to say it is or isn't good. I’m from the upstate of South Carolina, and as a kid I went to family reunions in the lower part of the state where vinegar based BBQ is popular. It was definitely an acquired taste for me! As an adult, I like the vinegar based barbecue more, but I still prefer tomato base barbecue instead.

    To eat real NC BBQ you have to eat from a mom&pop BBQ Restaurant. There’s Eastern bbq, and western bbq. I was raised on Western NC BBQ, but I like both. Cone to Shelby NC and eat at Red Bridges BBQ, now that’s real NC BBQ. 😋😎

    So many factors enter in when judging bbq. How hungry, prior experience, the right place on the right day with the right bbq chef, which part of the pig your bbq comes from, the sauce(s) used in preparation and at serving, etc. Y'all did a good job of expressing your opinion....and everyone has one. Fun video. Jesse is sure protective of her Merican foods.😀

    As far as restaurant bbq goes in Charlotte, Midwood is fine. But it's a chain. Not a great barometer of NC BBQ IMO. The spot to go to in the Charlotte area is Jon G's, and it's not close. Inconvenient on distance, time commitment, and hours, but totally worth it.

    I thought I would share what I just learned about American style pizza, though many small pizza places came from Italy, pizza wasn't popular until Pizza Hut was the first American style, but the second came only months from Domino's Pizza. Now, this may be the weird part, Pizza Hut started in Wichata, Kansas, and the second was out of Yipsalanty, Michigan, yep, places I wouldn't have thought of either. 😃

That said there can be to much vinegar they are all tomato based just one has more sweetness to it. We have a local restaurant in Lexington Tennessee that was rated #3 in United States on sauce it's vinegar based but it's only a hint this sauce was bought I hear for 10k when owner was selling out years ago everyone loved the sauce so much that new owners bought recipe. @ThePasinis Most recommended by whom? People who live in North Carolina or tourists? I suspect the latter. It would be like polling Americans who visit Italy for two weeks and only go to a few major cities to recommend places. While chain BBQ in North Carolina is better than chain BBQ in Ohio, it's also far from the best the state offers, and doesn't reflect the varied BBQ across North and South Carolina. It would be like going to Rome or Venice, eating at a place that caters tourists with English menus and pictures, and reaching a conclusion about all of Italian food, which as you know, is hyper-local.

    In NC you need to try whole hog BBQ thats really what they are know for. Sam Jones and Rodney Scott are famous pitmasters for whole hog BBQ . They both have several resturants i think Rodney Scott has some in SC also. There are two types of sauce and BBQ types in NC. One Eastern NC is Vineger and pepper based sauce and whole hog BBQ. Western NC is Ketchup based pepper sauce and pork shoulder based. Memphis really hits hard for pork. But to give NC a real shot you must try whole hog BBQ especially from one of the big names.

    For God's sake...Yelp has one location of the Midwood Smokehouse ranked at #10 in Charlotte. The rest are ranked below that one, including the one you went to. There are 9 restaurants in Charlotte that are rated higher than their best one, and Charlotte isn't even a BBQ town. If you went to Lexington NC, where BBQ was invented, your heads would explode. IMO, if you went to Prime BBQ in Knightdale, you'd forget Texas existed. At least get to even the top 50 in the state before you say something ridiculous like "TN BBQ is better than NC BBQ".

If they can do a good brisket then chances are they have worked out everything else too.
