@@GizmoSlipTech Is the 4080 in the G18 the 12GB version? In Australia we have Scar with the 4080 12GB GPU and the 4090 16GB, but that and an extra TB of storage costs an additional $2500AUD. I just can’t justify that based on this review if the GPU’s line up with what you have tested. Both models coming with 32GB ram. And if course thank you for this video! It’s a life saver being able to compare the 4080 vs 4090 performances.

Thanks for video comparing the two versions. I was thinking about purchasing another brand of laptop, but this laptop has changed my mind. I was waiting for someone to post a video doing this EXACT comparison. I feel like your review of these two laptops is GREAT!!! I've seen the prices of the "SCAR 18" and some websites are TAXING even past $4500 for the Scar 18 version. I WANT THE BEST, but for me paying around $1400 (+) for a minimal increase in Performance is NOT WORTH IT FOR ME!!!! I would LOVE TO have the SCAR 18 with the 4090, but the STRIX G18 will suffice for me. Since the introduction of the 40 Series GPU's, vendors have been overcharging for laptops and especially if it has a 4090 in it!!!!
Hey Gizo, had to say thank you! I have watched so many of your reviews and after a ton of research I ordered my massive upgrade of a laptop and went with the GT77 Rtx 4090. I am super excited! Thank you again for the awesome reviews!
About the coilwhine, it doesn't dissapear, usually it increases(with getting older), but the brain learns to filter out continous sounds after a while, therefore many people start NOT hearing it anymore. And if you are older or have ear damage, you don't hear those frequencies anymore anyways... This is very noticeable when you don't hear it, but you take your laptop with you on work, all the colleagues are annoyed by it...even though I don' hear it anymore. I had to send the laptop back for this reason. Coil whine is a problem not only for yourself but also for everyone around you... This is a real quality problem that should not have happened. I also heard that it might be the atmos speakers getting interference when high voltage is applied from the battery. When connected to the mains the coil whining seems to be lower or non-existent. Did asus mention something about this? Are they fixing this for the next gen?
I have just bought my strix g18 today, my previous laptop has gtx1070. After seeing this test i think i made the correct decision, paying a lot more for 4090 seems unnecessary at 2k resolution, let alone 1080p :)
@@Mohanad204 So far no problems, temperatures doesn't go above 80C under heavy load. It is too soon to have any conclusion yet, we'll see how it will perform in the long run. @@MD.Nibras I am also using it performance mode, didn't see anything above 83 in the long gaming sessions so far. Mostly sustaining around 80, which is normal for a gaming laptop imo. I have 90-95 spikes on the CPU rarely but they are instantaneous and won't harm anything since max thermal tolerance of the CPU is 100 celcius. If it's staying above 90 for long periods it could cause problems in the long run, but if it's not the case i would't worry. My old gtx1070 laptop also running around 80 degrees Celcius under load, it has been 6 years nearly and still working like champ. I expect ASUS to do the same :)
As indicated by another review (BIBA Laptops), 4090 has a larger chip which has more area to release the heat, which causes lower temperatures on 4090, which also gives it more thermal room for overclocking. That actually would mean 4090 might in practice have more overclocking potential than 4080.
@@andadore443 I guess might depend on total thermal headroom. If you are also pushing your CPU which is most probably also connected to the same pipes or vapor chamber, the GPU might hit the thermal limit before it hits the power limit, I am not sure how the equation is set with all parameters included. You might be right, too.
The extra area doesn't allow more heat to dissipate, because the extra area also generates extra heat (more cuda cores). Therefore the heat dissipation remains the same. But there is a caveat, the 4090 has a minimum tdp of 80w versus 60w on the 4080, this makes the 4090 always hotter then the 4080.
The cost difference for the 4090 is just not worth it. If you get the G18 and need good cpu thermals, you'll probably have to re-apply the liquid metal. Lots of folks report subpar application from the factory (myself included). Correcting this gets thermals in line and with a decent undervolt I can get a 35k run in R23. the 10 minute loop ends up around 34k after thermal saturation. I added a 4TB drive and doubled my ram with a small boost in ram speed and still came out over 1k cheaper than the 4090 variant.
Just got a Strix G18 for $1900 from Bestbuy, it's an open box. So we'll have to see if backlight bleed is really bad or something, but for $500, I think I can live with a little bit. Should be here tomorrow.
Overall to me 4090 seems to have a larger gap to 4080 than 3080 had to 3070 in 2021 laptop models. Back then 12% performance gain required ~20% more power to the GPU and from the wall - something we also pay for unless having own solar panels. Now this performance gain comes at the same GPU power thanks to a larger chip. Perhaps this results in lower GPU thermals, which could mean even more FPS gain if normalized for fan noise.
Lenovo's pro 7i 4090 is available for order now, so I ordered that and will return the 4080 version. Works out to $200 more in my case. At that price, I'm ok with 10% more on the GPU.
As I mentioned at the start, I know for sure Cyberpunk 2077 was ran on Turbo fan profile (maybe a couple others, I should double check), which results in less fan noise and higher temps.

G18 is what I wanted the M18 to be. Your buying a 18 inch for the screen and M18 drops the ball on this one. I like alienware and love the build quality and customer service. But my Alienwares always run hot. I bought a G18 and my screen died and had to get unit replaced because of a crap repair. But Best Buy did replace it. Not sure how long I will have the G18. The 4090 is more efficient at the same wattage vs the 4080. So at the same power, the 4090 will be a little bit cooler. Its also on a physically bigger die, allowing more surface area to transfer heat to the heatsink. The thermal paste or liquid metal could have been applied better on the 4090 version also. Do not forget about the GPU RAM amount and threshold difference (16 GB on 256-bit BUS for 4090 vs 12 GB on 192-bit BUS for 4080). Today it is only about 10-15% difference in performance, however, in 2-3 years period, it may have much more significant impact on it while playing in more advanced and graphic demanding games.
I doubt it, because the cpu seems to be a bottleneck for the GPU in most cases. I also think the PCIe 4.0 also is a bottleneck for the 4090. This problem might disspear with the new meteorlake cpu's which have PCIe 5.0
Why is seems that scar 18 has a cooler GPU and hotter CPU compared with G16? Is there any difference between the cooling modules of these two computers?

For those concerned about coil whine on the G18, i just got mine today and its so minimal on my unit i had to press my ear up against the machine to barely hear it. I heard from a reddit post that Asus revised the powerbrick in a way that reduces coil whine. Not sure if its true, but the newer batches are much less likely to have bad coil whine from what im seeing
I’ve had the 4080 version for about 2 weeks. No coil whine, so I’m wondering if they indeed fixed that issue. Also, almost no light bleed on the screen either.
I had no coil whine or bleed. Then my lcd went out and had to be repaired by Asus. The laptop all of sudden developed bad coil whine and replacement LCD had terrible back light bleed. Just had it replaced because the front LED strip somehow got damaged during repair also. Nightmare

Is the 4080/4090 $500 price difference worth it in the Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 8's? Price points a bit closer together than other manufacturers it seems...
I’m thinking about going for the 4090 but, what I’m worried about, is if it’ll have heating issues such as the legion 7i with its 3080 ti. I was almost about to purchase the all AMD version of the legion 7 but I just had to wait and see for the 4000’s series and now I’m stuck between the 4080 and 4090
Think about % increase in unit cost vs % increase in observed performance, for better perspective. Think how long you'll want to keep the laptop (it's speculative, but more VRAM/bus more cores and slightly lower operating temps - since both 4080M and 4090M are limited to the same max TGP of 175W - should help it stay functional and relevant for longer). Unlike laptops of last decade, there is no potential for upgrade. No opportunity to buy midrange and do a mid-life upgrade to a high end GPU, when performance starts lagging behind. So what you buy is what you get, there will be no relatively cheap 'trade-up' options these days. You may be able to justify the premium for the 4090M based on sane considerations and pricing, the Eluktronics Mech16/Mech17 is a similar markup over the 4080M. For comparison though, $1400usd here though when they're both gimped by display res and CPU power limit, and bundled with extra RAM/SSD you might not need (or can probably get cheaper elsewhere) is clearly not worth it.
Yeah another thing holding me back from getting the Lenovo pro 7i with the 4080 is that it comes with only 12 Gb of vram while the 4090 comes with 16 gb if the 4080 came with 16 I would’ve bought it already
I am going to upgrade from an old Lenovo legion laptop with a 1660ti and an i7 to either an Asus m16 with a 12th gen i9 and 3070ti or to an Asus Strix G18 with a 13th gen i9 and 4070 which would you recommend? I was concerned with the thermal issues of the m16. But I have also heard that 4070 is not much better than 3070ti
I would buy the Strix G18 for the better thermals, Frame Generation, better CPU, and bigger display-but it is larger in size. That is the biggest difference
No everyone this resolution is really low the higher the resolution the better frames you'll see on the 4090 over the 4080 4K is when you start to see the results and I honestly don't want to play 1080p
Is a gaming laptop worth it? Over a desktop. I’m the guy who had a desktop and sold it. It sat there collecting dust as most my friends are on ps5. The idea of a gaming laptop is sick because it’s mobil and can game like crazy. Not sure I can justify the purchase tho lol
I probably won't ever go back to desktop. You do lose alot of upgradeability with a gaming laptop but the fact that you can game anywhere that has a power outlet is such a plus with me, and with these particular ones its high end desktop equivalent. It's a great choice for people that just want a gaming machine they can travel with, if price isn't an issue I would pick a gaming laptop over a console, definitely.
its depends. Huge giant heavy DTR (biggest of the big, 6kg 2inch thick Clevo with desktop CPU + 2x GPUs) works for me. I have had multiple workplaces for 15+ years, hate being tethered to the same desk all day long, don't game on battery, am never that far away from a power outlet, and I am massively impatient so NEED powerful hardware. The GPU power is also nice to play games with. That level of luggability is all I need. The only problem with having work and play on the same machine is discipline lol. I write it off as a business expense over 3 years against income tax and hold it for years more so the annualised cost of ownership is not as bad as the initial pricetag suggests. If anyone from the tax dept is reading, what I meant to say was I use those GPUs only for business activities such as video encoding and running 3x 4K displays.

Meanwhile, to solve the problem that the keyboard without independent number keys, Strix SCAR 16 utilizes a virtual number keyboard configuration on the touchpad. If you are looking for a more portable gaming laptop with mid-to-high end gaming performance, the smaller Strix SCAR 16 will be a better and affordable choice.
I bought my last PC (Asus) in 2012 so I'm quite overdue for an upgrade. I splurged and ordered myself the 16" Scar with the 4090. I couldn't be more excited. 😁
I bought my last in 2017 and ordered a SCAR 16 4080. I'm super excited. I don't know how you held out for so long. My 5-year old laptop is struggling to play 1080p at medium settings.

I just purchased the new ASUS Scar 16” + RTX 4080, and it is amazing. I had to fight a bit for it, due to being able to find a lot of the other models for 2023 available, but the Scar 16” (2023) is either sold out, or on backorder, which really shows it’s the best of everything for the price, being $2899, and everyone seems to think so.
2899? I thought it is 3400+
Hi You are able setup light per key or only zones?
I just purchased a scar 16 (4080) for 2100 euros (hoping it doesn't have coil noise). Did you notice coil noise on yours?

A very revealing video that you should not overpay 50% of the cost of a laptop for 4090
As I showed, there are quite a few other upgrades in the $1400 upgrade, like RAM, SSD, speakers, and RGB implementation as well as the RTX 4090. But yeah, most people will still want to go for Strix G18 imo.
@@GizmoSlipTech yeah just like the desktop versions of these cards I think you are really gonna see the differences when you go up to 4k.

they bundle other stuff in with it. 4090M is only a $500 AUD (like, $USD350) upgrade over 4080M on the Mech17 GP2
Is it next week yet? Waiting on the Scar 16 4080 is killing me! Lol
Looking forward to watching this comparison in the meantime
HOW IS IT NOW ANY POBLEMS ?
I just bought a strict scar 18 with a 4080, 14900hx, 2.5 K mini LED nebula display, 32 gigs of DDR5 5600mhz, 1tb GEN4 nvme. It still sells for 2999. I got an open box from Micro Center for 1799. Not a scratch on it and I bought a one year accidental on it so I have nothing to worry about. It’s an absolute monster, and the screen is hands-down one of the best features.
Thanks for putting this together. Quite informative. This video answered a lot of questions about which of these machines to purchase.
Glad it was helpful!

Thumbs up for you being the first doing that necessary comparison 👍👍

How you like it so far?
How is it doing so far ?
@@Mohanad204 So far no problems, temperatures doesn't go above 80C under heavy load. It is too soon to have any conclusion yet, we'll see how it will perform in the long run. I still have my 1070 laptop today, using it since late 2016. It has been more than 5 years and it still works fine, temperatures are similar. I hope G18 will perform like it too.
@@rstk4408 bro I too got my g18 day before yesterday I play on performance and I get temperature of above 80 to 90 to 92 is is harmful to get this percentage or its totally normal I. M worried pls reply me
@@MD.Nibras I am also using it performance mode, didn't see anything above 83 in the long gaming sessions so far.
I currently have a GTX 1660 laptop. Just purchased the strix g18 rtx 4080 5minutes ago. Can't wait!
So 12% fps gain for 1,300 more dollars? Crikey those few extra frames are spensive.
As indicated by another review (BIBA Laptops), 4090 has a larger chip which has more area to release the heat, which causes lower temperatures on 4090, which also gives it more thermal room for overclocking. That actually would mean 4090 might in practice have more overclocking potential than 4080.
but after all, everything depends on the TDP, which cannot be increased
Update???
so how'd it go?
But if there are SCAR 18 with 4080 and 4090 - whitch one I should buy? +800$ worth for 4090?
Overall to me 4090 seems to have a larger gap to 4080 than 3080 had to 3070 in 2021 laptop models. Back then 12% performance gain required ~20% more power to the GPU and from the wall - something we also pay for unless having own solar panels. Now this performance gain comes at the same GPU power thanks to a larger chip. Perhaps this results in lower GPU thermals, which could mean even more FPS gain if normalized for fan noise.
Bigger difference will be in 4K resolution.
The difference in temps were huge. The 4090 routine sat at 10-15C lower than the 4080.
Lenovo's pro 7i 4090 is available for order now, so I ordered that and will return the 4080 version. Works out to $200 more in my case. At that price, I'm ok with 10% more on the GPU.
If cooling is the same on these laptops, why is g18 always having 80° temp on gpu while scar is more around 68°
As I mentioned at the start, I know for sure Cyberpunk 2077 was ran on Turbo fan profile (maybe a couple others, I should double check), which results in less fan noise and higher temps.
Is the 80° on gpu problem if you wanna keep laptop for long time?😅
It's also a bigger chip with less energy per squared millimeter.

Guys, why SCAR 4090 GPU is more cooler then STRIX 4080? Because by GPU 4090 itself? Or by SCAR better cooling?

I returned my Scar 18, the Coil Whine was terrible.
Why is seems that scar 18 has a cooler GPU and hotter CPU compared with G16? Is there any difference between the cooling modules of these two computers?

ive always bought the top tier graphics card and sacrificed the cpu and ram. this time around i think ill go all in. it will be future proofed for a bit. i got the 1080ti, skipped the 20 series, and got the 3090 when it came out. to be honest, my 1080ti still kicks butt. to end my rant lol, it would make sense to get the 4090 because you cant upgrade and the few extra fps could mean the difference in playable and unplayable a few years down the road.
Will the 5080 mobile have more vram than 4080 in here?
Is the 4080/4090 $500 price difference worth it in the Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 8's? Price points a bit closer together than other manufacturers it seems...
Ikr I’m stuck on this debate too
I’m thinking about going for the 4090 but, what I’m worried about, is if it’ll have heating issues such as the legion 7i with its 3080 ti. I was almost about to purchase the all AMD version of the legion 7 but I just had to wait and see for the 4000’s series and now I’m stuck between the 4080 and 4090
It is only $500 dollars more tho 🤔
Couldn't find a Strix G18 selling at 2499😢
Does both have same motherboard?

It is diminishing returns as with all others things.

I have an 18 SCAR. Less than one year later, my SSDs died. I had two 1T SSD.
That’s really concerning. I value reliability over anything. Did both fail at the same time? That would be very odd. Did you discover the cause?
I hope you were able to recover an essential data.
@Adam-vs4ec I didn't check them individually, I just considered both of them dead. I ordered another two SSDs, and now everything is working fine.
I obviously had zero drivers installed and no internet wire, so I had to manually deactivate the Net function so I could install the windows without internet first.
One thing is different know, I have lower Ampere values on my new SSDs. Do you think it is concerning? I am not an expert. The old ones had 2.8 A, and the new ones have 1.9 A.
Is the G18 upgradeable to 64 GB RAM?
Whar's better the strix or the scar?
Im buying a laptop, the 4090 is 600USd more than the 4080 version, worth it or pass?
110w on the CPU is insane. My 6800H uses 25w
why no review for scar 16 4080 or 4090?
Waiting for it to arrive still
@@GizmoSlipTech ok nice
Can someone explain why laptop with 4090 has such higher temp during benchmarks? Same CPU's, and same TDP of GPU's. I wanted to go for 4080, but i want to go for 4090 bcs it was much lower temps, which is most important for laptops. But why 4090 had such higher temps on CPU?
The 4090 is more efficient at the same wattage vs the 4080. So at the same power, the 4090 will be a little bit cooler. Its also on a physically bigger die, allowing more surface area to transfer heat to the heatsink. The thermal paste or liquid metal could have been applied better on the 4090 version also.
Gerrads tech youtube channel has a video comparing 4080 vs 4090. You can see everything u need in that video. Search it.
@@bigtwinz3296 Thanks, but it doesnt explain higher CPU temp with 4090?
@@bloodthyrsty yeah not sure. They are same cpu with same vapor chamber and everything. My guess would be either the cpu on the 4080 was thermal throttling itself more and then running less watts bc of higher initial temps. Or the 4080 computer had a better application of liquid metal? Probably the 2nd guess. Laptop to laptop variation
@@bigtwinz3296 well, in the end i bought g814 N6070W with 4070 and 13980hx , and upgraded RAM + SSD, didnt expect i will buy this low gpu, but ihad gtx 1070, this is increase about 100%, but last 2 years playing anyway games from 90's or early 00's and diablo 4 which is okey for 4070.. welp
G18 has a Nebula display, but the Scar has a Nebula HDR display with mini LED, that's the big reason for price difference.
no look at it again i don't think scar 18 is miniled
@@hdkleecehennemi scar 18 is mini led. Otherwise it wouldn’t cost $4000
@@andrewx8888 na miniled version came this year, when the video first created it wasn't miniled.
Where can I buy the G18 for 2500?
In germany that shit cost 3500
yes, here we pay 4080 price for the 4070 g18, no way i'm spending 3500 or 4000 dollars in a laptop, and rest of 4080s in the 2000 range are hot garbage, i want a complete laptop, not a shit with a 4080, so i ended up with the rog g18 4070 for 1900
Will there be an alienware m18 review?
Surly my next laptop will be the g18
Thank you gizmo u r the best
When will asus rog rtx 40 series laptop launch in india any idea ??
