  • Why was World War II so much worse than the first world war? It's something to ponder in history. Sure, many of the weapons got better, but what else made World War 2 so much deadlier than World War 1 for all sides? This video will explore certain factors that increased the lethal potency of the world's armies and led to the mass destruction of untold millions of people, both military and civilian.

At the end of the Great War the winners seriously punished the losers. There was no justice in the Treaty of Versaille. That being the case Germeny was feeling that they had been not only beaten but humiliated globally. (not defending them, just trying to see the spur). When they began to flex their new muscle it felt good like they were coming back to life again. As you pointed out the industrial capabilities had increased tenfold. The US saw a chance to become the new world power and did so buy selling old ships to the UK. As usual war fostered scientific leaps and before they realizied it, humanity used the new weapons in the hopes of preventing an extension of the war as the Allies saw the Soviet juggernaught pushing west. People then as always have been sacrificed for political gain. Then during the trials of people for war crimes the judges (or more specifically their nations) began planning for the next war by searching for and basically bribing the scientists to emmigrate to their nations, or in the case of Russia seized them and took them to the USSR. All the talk around the Paris World's Fair that predicted that man was now too enlightened to commit war were and are forgotten. The old inate forces of greed and the desire for power trade, military or financial had reestablished themselves, and mankind was dragged down a pathway of supposed tolerance and equity while those in the background sated their lust for worldly things. We know better, but we don't act better.

David, yes, I recently watched a medieval documentary and the narrator commented that most wars were started over rivalries, land grabs, etc. Thanks for your comment!

World War One was the last war fought on Napoleonic lines and it was the first war that saw mechanised military warfare. WW1 was also the last war that the vast civilian populations were not the main target. WW2 civilians were a target because they were the workers in factories that produced heavy weapons, aircraft and the ships needed to sustain the war effort in all nations involved. When Japan invaded China in 1936 it was the civilian population that was the target of a terror campaign, likewise in many parts of Europe as the Nazis rolled up country after country it was the civilian population who became the main target. Jews, Homosexuals, Gypsies and the mentally infirm. So from this point I would say yes WW2 was worse than WW1. But WW1 was a meat grinder, life was meaningless to the Generals running the war from the comfort of a palace. In Britain we have a saying "Lions led by Donkeys" true today as it was back then. Coined in classical antiquity, the phrase was commonly used after World War I to describe senior commanders of militaries which participated in the war, most prominently those of the British Armed Forces. The historiography of the United Kingdom during the 20th century frequently described the infantry of the British Army as brave soldiers (lions) being sent to their deaths by incompetent, inept and indifferent commanders (donkeys). They would sling 20 thousand men at a trench system knowing it was certain death then sip Champagne and pat each other on the back for a job well done. WW1 was a nasty war for the Soldier. But all war is evil, all war is bad, the next one will be worse because of the nuclear capability nations have. The next World War will be the War to end all Wars for sure.
