Well…I just watched the end of your video and saw the “family” comment. My husband and I considered ourselves a family as soon as we got married. We were a family for 2 years before we ever had children. Having our kids didn’t make us a family, the two of us became a family as soon as we were married. You guys are the sweetest family right now!!

I'm just starting to dream about lifestyles that I would like to have when I'm able to retire and sailing/cruising has gotten to the top of the list. I watch a bunch of videos on youtube and have seen plenty of weather/passage videos - but it all seems like an adventure with a happy ending. Being ten minutes into the video and seeing the tears and feelings that you guys are putting out in the open is refreshing. You're telling the truth. None of us have an "S" on our chest, were not perfect or infallible. It sucks to miss something that can turn out to be as big as this, but it's still real and it's valuable to those of us who are watching from half a world away. 8 months have passed since you dropped this video, and I'll catch up to you guys' most recent stuff in a matter of hours - but I hope that you've continued to show the truth in the lifestyle that you're living and I'm thinking about getting into. Thank you for documenting your truth and your life and letting us all get a glimpse of what's out there for us all (good and bad) should we be able to tighten a sheet and find the right heading. Thanks for the last 8 months that you guys lived and that I'll watch in the next few days.

Life is a constant learning process. Reality does NOT play by a certain set of rules. I work in a hospital, and I am constantly confronted by reality and its brutal sense of humor. Guatemala entrance is just another learning experience that will not be forgotten any time soon. Just another hurdle in life’s many adventures. Everything that you have accomplished so far in both of your life’s (medical issues, becoming a pilot, college, re-building a boat, etc.). Your crying is just a release of emotions all at once. Some yell, use profanity, hit a wall, etc. this is where your dogs can be an awesome emotional support. You will conquer Guatemala, and many others around both of your journeys.

Yeah it wrong but I’ve traveled the world backpacking and I can tell you there are many borders you will not cross without paying a little! If you have all your papers in order they hate it! Best thing to do is just ask “what is the fine”. I know people will say you shouldn’t because it makes it worse but sorry yeah sometimes you should! I even saw a girl arrested at a jungle border in Asia 100’s of miles from civilisation, because she wouldn’t pay $10. To this day I dread to think what happened to her! Also those guys are probably only being paid a couple of hundred bucks a month if there lucky. They see us in are expensive boats living a life they could not even dream and yeah to be honest I don’t blame them!

Thank you so so much for sharing the difficult times. I have been watching a couple other sailing/travel channels, and while I know that they have their struggles also, they often don't show them. This has led me to feel not so good about my own life as I also desire to live this kind of lifestyle. I've had to take a break from watching them because as they do make me happy, I feel that subconsciously they have also been making me unhappy ("why isn't my life so good?") Actually seeing the struggles you go through and not just knowing about them gives me a kind of balance when I watch your channel. It's not that I take any kind of joy in your despair, it's more about me knowing everyone struggles with certain things in life and I'm not alone in my struggles. So with that, I am sorry you've gone through some difficult experiences but thank you do very much for sharing and I hope you don't have to go through many of them. Cheers!

I think this is one of my most favorite videos. People always talk about how perfect everything goes and so rarely post their failures which as we all know is not the way that real life works. To show that everything doesn't go perfectly the way that you did was so real, And quite frankly beautiful. Some of these shows will kind of fake drama for the sake of drama, but this was just real life and it was very appreciated. ❤

Thanks for sharing guys. Its late where I am, so will be brief. As others have said. The gamble that you took with the boat. The incredible amount of hard work that you both put in, to make her better than 'factory' if my memory isn't playing tricks, was something I'm unlikely to forget. Mistakes are brilliant learning opportunities. You know that. So, learn the lessons and move on. Like, don't let your food stocks get so low. Or maybe, always have an emergency 'stash' of non perishables that you don't touch, unless its a genuine emergency.
Crossing borders since 9/11 is one of the most bureaucratic obstacles that we have to face in our world. Most people only do this once or twice a year, for vacations. Or, not at all. So, there will be hiccups. There will be dramas. But courtesy and a smile will often open doors that previously were closed.
I'm ex-UK military and while the military can be very dysfunctional compared to civilian life. It does have a lot to teach you.
Like, debriefing after a 'situation', passage or whatever. It should never be a shaming session. That's not the object.
Just a run through of what happened, what went well. What could've gone better. What you'd do differently next time. How you might prepare differently. Do this until it becomes a habit and you'll find yourselves doing it in a chilled conversation, naturally. Then mentally filing it away. Or putting it in your log book for future reference.
I love the term satisficing. Things don't have to be done perfectly. As long as you accomplish your goals or some of them. You don't expend more time and energy achieving them than you want to and you achieve them safely etc etc It often doesn't matter that you don't hit 100% of a goal. Nobody is watching over your shoulder. Nobody is scoring you. Armchair admirals may criticise. But, they'd likely do much worse themselves. There's a saying in some branches of the military, that 'every day above ground, is a good day'. That's a low bar, you might think.
But, in the military, it can be a very high bar. With what you're doing, its lowish, so basically keeping yourselves afloat in all senses every day is something to celebrate and be thankful for. Everything else on top is a bonus.
As to the 'person' who corrected your definition of your family. I understand that often in life, what people say can be thought provoking and it seems to me that like me, your relish being challenged. If its done to aid growth. But what the guy said isn't fact, so far as I know. Its just his opinion. He's welcome to it. But that doesn't mean he gets to dictate what labels you or anyone else use to describe, whatever.
His opinion is no more valid than any random person. In fact, he's way behind the times and needs to educate himself. The old definition of what constitutes a family has been consigned to the history books. We have all sorts of families now. Almost a kaleidoscope of possibilities.
I suspect that this journey that you're on. Both physically and metaphorically. Will help you grow as people and as partners, in ways that you can't even imagine yet. You've stepped outside of your comfort zones since the start of this journey and as I'm sure you know, at least as well as I, that's where the growth is. We only get to pass here once. You've got to make your life count for something.
I almost forgot. I'm really liking the new raw style. Very 'front line journalistic' ;) Hopefully it takes a lot less time to edit etc
    Apologies for stating the obvious.
    Happy trails :)

Jade I hate seeing you cry and upset. You are such a sweetheart and have to try and find it in your heart to aim for perfection but leave room to forgive yourself when you miss the mark. Welcome to the human race. As you age i hope this will become easier for you. In the meantime know your true fans love you and without judgement. Try and adopt the mantra that you dont win or lose, you win or learn! Remember no one like someone who is never wrong. That fact that you both showed us your vulnerability is what’s so beautiful about your channel. In appreciation!

The way I try to look at mistakes is “ok, this is a problem I now know how to deal with. I wouldn’t have known how to fix this before, now I do.” Looking for how a bad situation adds to me and my experience, as opposed to how it takes away has really helped with my anxiety and perfectionism. I hope you’re both feeling much better! ❤

I’ve been binge watching you guys from the beginning for the last week. There’s so much I could tell you right now about why I’m not there myself but I do have the boat. It’s a cute little older Catalina 30 that’s perfect for just me. Maybe a +1 if I meet the right woman but for now, it’s my project and it’s perfect for me! At 48 years old, I’m still learning that what other people think about me is none of my business and I wish those people felt the same way at times. But here I go with what I think! I’m impressed with the way you’ve taken this journey and made it yours 100%. You’ve listened to what people have had to say, accepted what fits and let go of what wouldn’t work quite as well for your path. Something I’m also still working on. I’ve seen a ton of channels like yours but not many have shown raw emotion and it’s release, only highlighting the beautiful side of sailing. This was important for me to see because it shows the reality of sailing. I’m learning a lot from your reality as I work a bit more every day to hopefully cross winds with you. You guys inspire me and when I watch your videos, I think, why not me? I have no good answer for that. So thank you for being here and not letting the nay sayers discourage you from your dreams and hearts. Side note, the logic that you’re not a family without children doesn’t make sense to me. Do you cease to be a family when the kids are grown and gone? Are you only a family again when they come to visit and no more a family when they go home? I’d like to ask that person who said you weren’t a family those questions. The way I see it, I’m still a father even though my daughter (26) grew up and now lives 2,000 miles away. I started telling people to write their opinions of me on toilet paper, it’s the only way their opinions will be useful in my life. I know, I know, it’s just my opinion but I think you guys are a family. A very beautiful and inspiring family at that. Until I see you on the water, I’ll keep you on the screen! Much love to you both!

Life and Success requires payments along the way....TUITION.....So.... guys you're still in the game and are that much the wiser.......lessons learned like this are never forgotten. Wow I feel so badly for you, Jade! Anyone could make that mistake, but the energy I could feel coming from Brett is palpable! I understand frustration, but I also understand “stonewalling” and someone being twice as hard on you than you already are of yourself can be miserable. I understand the why you hate making a mistake when you only have each other.

You two are a family. Beating yourself up for making a mistake is a mistake itself. The best learning comes from mistakes. Recognizing when you make one is the key thing. Admitting it is even better. Progressing in spite of it adds to you wisdom and judgment. Looking back on my long life, the mistakes I made often became the best of times.

Jade, I'm like you. I beat myself up pretty bad when I make a bigger mistake like that. Then I back myself down off the ledge and hit the problem with a good dose of rational thought and learning from my mistake. No real damage done. Mistakes are inevitable and a part of life. You both handled it very well. I did want to say though you cried harder than I've every seen anyone cry. I've never seen tears actually drip off someone's face before! Not making fun of you all, I just found that interesting to see!

I absolutely love the "behind the scenes" stuff. Don't be hard on yourselves. What you have done and what you are doing is absolutely incredible. There are very few people who could possibly do what you've done and are doing. Very, very few! One thing! I understand that it's a big thing, but it's one you can fix. God I wish there's some way I could be of help to you. Watching you and traveling with you "virtually" has been such a big help to me. I have my Rockies here in southern Colorado, but due to an injury, I can't get around anymore. I came out here in 1997 and moved out into the wilderness for a couple years learning how to live with and off the land like we should. I have that same "adventure" bug that you do and I understand that part of you. As long as you keep posting, I'll keep watching with extreme gratitude for how it benefits me deep inside where it counts. You two are the best! Oh, and your puppies too. 😀 Happy sailing! P.S. right now you're talking about a "family", yes, you are definitely a family!

It's refreshing to see that people aren't afraid of their failures. I just didn't realize that some people have.lived sheltered lifestyles to where a small set back would cause that much distress... I guess when you live a life expecting failures that when they happen you just laugh and move on... You guys are doing great. Don't worry about others opinions so much and just be happy being yourselves! Failures are only FAILURES WHEN YOU ACCEPT DEFEAT! It's been fun watching you guys getting out there and enjoying life! Keep doing it! Just stop stressing over the small slip ups.... This small blip will be a mild memory of about a second of your lives later on! Mistakes just help you become more efficient later. Some of us have had to learn many skills because we and become proficient in them because I can't rely on others for the same level of service! Sometimes learning is hard!
