    I actually like the sentiment that every therapist should be seeing a therapist. It doesn't mean they are all mentally ill themself, but it does mean they are taking the time to care for their own mental health and getting feedback from another professional.

    • @brigade7678
      @brigade7678 Год назад +32

      Yep. They have to sit and listen to absolutely awful things as a job. It makes total sense they should have a therapist to check in with and work through things. Also tons of mental illnesses can be treated, but you may still want check ins or just help processing events in your own life.
      Therapists don't magically become mentally perfect forever lol. And they can't just therapize themselves. Doctors go see doctors!

    • @rinchuyi
      @rinchuyi Год назад +11

      Exactly. Also a lot of therapists become therapist because they know the struggle with mental health and want to be there for other people who struggle with the same thing. Definitely did not agree with Stephanie on that matter. Also if every therapist in the world was "fixed" there would be very little therapists in the world, maybe even none. Because they are still human.

    There is also another victim in this case. All her clients. It took me 10 years to trust a therapist again after the one I had as a teenager didn't listen to me, and just put me on whatever medication my mother asked all because I didn't like her boyfriend (WHO TRIED TO SLEEP WITH ME BEHIND HER BACK). Imagine all those poor people finding out their therapist was so evil and then questioning themselves and refusing to seek help again. How many of her patients suffered mentally because of her selfish choices.

      That’s an excellent point. The clients are absolutely victims. And I think it’s very important for mental health professionals to talk to someone professionally themselves as a way to try to make sure that they remain in a place where they are truly capable of supporting their clients in an appropriate manner. It’s not going to be foolproof of course, especially since the mental health professional under treatment does not have to follow anyone’s advice who might believe that he or she should not be treating clients. But it’s something.

    This case is so bizarre to me. As someone with a master's degree in counseling, Pamela violated every ethical rule in the book. Professionals cannot treat family members, and the fact they lived together only makes it more unethical and complicated. Not only is this story bizarre, but it's completely shocking. Pamela's unethical behavior should have been detected by the board long ago.
    On another note, as someone who also lives with bipolar, your segment on the affects of missing doses is encouraging for me!

      I'm someone with mental health issues and I also have a cousin who is a psychiatrist. Even if it somehow was ethical, it would make me incredibly uncomfortable to have my cousin treating me. I love her very much but do I want to confide in her with all my personal issues? Hell no! I feel like since this is a US case some sort of argument could have been made if there had been money issues involved, but there's not even that to justify the reasoning. (I'm not saying not affording therapy with anyone but a family member would make it a good idea, but it would at least make sense in some way.)

    I’m studying to be a counselor and the big thing that my professors would make a point of is that anyone who is a psychologist/psychiatrist should see a mental health professional themselves. It’s not easy hearing different types of trauma from people of all walks of life. In order to keep helping others, it is important for counselors to have someone they can go to as well. Not defending the murderous psychiatrist because her issues seem to go beyond the occasional check in with a therapist. It’s scary that she was able to have her own practice.

      Was about to write a comment saying the same exact thing- my mom's a psychologist and whenever it's mentioned in her field that mental healthcare workers need their own therapists and such, it's never about them being "the most mentally unwell" or anything, it's not even really a joke so much as a common statement- it's just about how taking on other people's problems, trauma, etc all the time can take a toll on someone's mental wellbeing and thus it has to be consistently checked in on by another professional in order for any kind of counseling to be a maintainable practice.

When I realized what was going on and refused to listen to her she became abusive enough that I feared for my life until I managed to escape. Since she could not get to my dad she took it out on me since she knew that it would hurt my father by hurting me. In regards to mental health, some people can never “recover” from whatever they’re dealing with, and the goal isn’t to become “whole”, but rather to manage their condition as best they can and survive, just like a chronic illness.
    I personally don’t mind professionals joking about their own mental health. My psychiatrist chose to specialize in the same cluster of conditions I have because they have them too. I can get the most supportive care from them and they understand the small nuances that others don’t. Humor is how I cope, and making jokes about it with someone that gets it is comforting.
    I always appreciate the transparency of professionals who are simply human.
    Pam doesn’t count though. Manipulative psychopaths aren’t people who generally want to see their patients do well and should have no place in the practice.

    I think the whole joke about metal health professionals needing their own therapists and whatnot is more meant to say that mental health professionals listen to a LOT of really horrific stuff from their patients. But they can't show emotion about those things in front of their patients. They have to stay professional. So yes, I think it is necessary for mental health professionals to have their own mental health providers because I'm sure they need an outlet to work through the emotions they likely feel after listening to horrible things their patients have endured.

      A lot of doctors get into medicine after their own personal bouts with illness or watching their family members go through it. So I do think that people who have had mental health issues themselves can be drawn to psychiatry for that reason. Also, having their own therapist ("supervision") is also to make sure they are not projecting things onto their patients that come out of their own hang-ups. And dealing with strong feelings they might have about a patient that get in the way of being able to treat that patient objectively and successfully.

    The thing about therapists always having a therapist is likely due to vicarious trauma. That by hearing about hundreds of people's trauma in depth can cause it's own form of trauma. This is something we see in the field I'm studying in (ASL Interpreting) where interpreters will have vicarious trauma just through seeing oppression of people they care about everyday. So, I think it's something they say in a joking manner kind of like people do to make a negative thing seem a little less heavy. Every therapist I've ever had has said they've had a therapist before if not currently.

My oldest is Deaf so I definitely have already gotten a taste of the rudeness and lack of compassion for Deaf people and their needs, from strangers, to activities/events we are attending and requesting interpretation, and even family. I always say, it’s not hard or sad to have a Deaf kid, it’s pretty amazing actually, but it’s other people that can make things hard for my daughter and which hurts to see as her mom. Then to worry about her future when I’m not there all the time and she has to do this all on her own.

      That is likely true but it's also just that a lot of people who have trauma & have psychologically suffered often start to research it to better understand themselves, then end up pursuing it through academics/jobs. If they have been helped a lot by someone, often they want to spread that iindness & improve other people's lives so much.

      @@NotAnotherKuromi Oh yes,for sure! Many people go into the field because they have struggled with their own mental health issues and want to help others. For the most part, they have done the work on themselves and gotten to a better place before they start practicing psychology. Just wanted to put vicarious trauma out there since it's something that most will experience in that type of field and it isn't talked about enough. We only just started having this discussion in the field I'm studying in and there's a long way to go on our understanding of this topic.

But I do just want to give you huge props for allowing your daughter to learn ASL and making sure she has interpreters. You wouldn't believe how many of my Deaf friends' parents never even actually talk to their kids because they never bothered to learn ASL and tried an oral only approach with horrible results. 70% of parents never learn ASL and consequently Deaf children suffer - language deprivation is real. Very happy that you want the best for your child and are doing what you can to ensure that. Your daughter will have a much better life because of it - so thank you for doing your part. As someone who is a MHP, I make the joke that us MHPs are the craziest ones. Most of the time, MHPs have been through extremely traumatic things, needing intensive therapy themselves. I am one of those. I have 5 different mental health diagnoses but also work in a facility that treats teenage boys with mental health issues. When I make that joke, I make it because it lets those kids know that I’ve been through it too, but I am able to live a semi normal life and be successful. Being mentally ill does not equal dangerous. I will never be “whole” and I would never want to be. Missing parts of myself and being broken in different ways helps me to relate and understand my clients better. This is the only time I have ever been a little upset at something Stephanie said in a video. I do not have to be “whole” to be a mental health professional. But I do need to be professional and have boundaries with my practice. THAT is what she was missing.

  • @beep6645
    @beep6645 Год назад +15

    I’m currently getting my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health and luckily, there’s a lot more ethical codes in place now that prevent someone from giving therapy to a family member or anyone they are close to…for obvious reasons, it can be incredibly harmful to a client for them to have a personal relationship with their therapist outside of therapy. As for the mental health professionals being mentally sound, we are required to step back and get help ourselves if anything affects our practice/clients but healing isn’t linear and so a mental health professional can go through mental illness during active practice as long as they are getting help and it’s not affecting the clients. It’s crazy to hear this story compared to what we mental health professionals are being taught now.

      @@jabine59 some did yes, but there has been recent evolutions that connect these codes to law. It’s insane that those changes didn’t come about till 2014 though. But you absolutely cannot counsel a family member under any circumstances now. She still had an active practice until she, herself, closed it down. If anyone found out about her LIVING with him, she would’ve been stripped of her title nowadays. And she was planning on using the fact that she was his counselor to prove his insanity, but it would be just telling on herself now, so I’m glad these are in place. Criminals do find their way around though, and counseling as field is trying it’s best to prevent monsters like this from being professionals !

I live in a country, where mental health isn’t taken as seriously as in the US, so apart from these two angels, most people in my life have always been like „Well if you’re that weak, you probably shouldn’t waste our time and you shouldn’t study here, work here etc.“. I remember when I was really struggling in my personal life, I asked the student aid at my university if I can take a year off or something, that lady straight up told me „Maybe working in McDonalds would be more suitable career for you“, my psychiatrist called that lady in her free time to fight for me and all of a sudden, I could take a year off.

Someone who suffers from bipolar disorder is agonizing to watch. Medications take a lot of trials before finding the right one. The side effects can sometimes be worse feeling at the beginning. So many stop taking it. Watching a person go from Manic to stimulating behavior to not talking & lashing out is scary. For all person's around. I am bipolar. It took years to find the right Medications. I started psychology to understand myself better. I have more hyper behavior than anger. Anger scares me; for example if someone doubts me or I feel belittled. Instead of just ignoring it; I've said things I never even intended to. It's a very disturbing feeling. Because I try to be kind to all. My worst fear is losing control. I've seen many go off the deep end & truly hurt people. (Physically, mentally) bipolar disorder is brought on by trauma. Great video as always.
    And I think she should have gotten more time in prison.
    She was a psychiatrist who took advantage of the mental fragility of a client to kill her husband.
    And the only thing she got was 11 years and a loss of a license to practice in New York?
    Man our justice system is so broken.

    The idea of letting a disturbed teen on medication taking care of your 4 year old is disturbing to begin with. This coming from someone who has married to a person who I used to love with all my heart and who has a serious mental illness. I tried EVERYTHING to help him, including involuntary commitment, and still had to end it after 10 years and a half. And we have no kids.

    I love your rants SOOOO much! Picturing a therapist schooling me on how to control my impulses while they plan a murder, that was hillarious. And now my favorite defense that i really want someome to try to use is that their house "smells of rich mahogony". Did the crazy rich south carolina Murder family (murder... Murdock? Murdaugh!) use the "mahogony defense"? Snort.

    Sorry, this is a little off topic but I love the opening credits of your video, I find it strangely satisfying. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial type video showing step by step process of making the coffee in your intros. They could rival the big brand coffee chains. would be nice to know the type of coffee machine you use . You make the process look intricate but easy at same time. i want to elevate my home making coffee skills to the next level. i feel like i have written a thesis on coffee. love your main channel and crime weekly.

    Re: Them laying in bed together, It sounds like as a 19 y/o essentially under her care who also grew up with his cousin already 20 years older than him, he may have viewed her as a motherly/aunt figure. I would lay next to my mom or aunt without issue bc it's just maternal, you know? But I'm sure she was using that familial connection to manipulate him by being so emotionally 'romantic' with him. Creating that closeness/trust on both levels.

      You are not alone🤢🤮. Why would any production company pay someone for them just to lie? Trying to make that POS at to be a loving doting parent. IMO I think CA mur---- Caylee BC she was jealous of the love & attention Caylee was getting (how effing sick) & she wanted to hurt her parents. BC if was no need to take Caylee to any "babysitter." I'm pretty sure Cindy & George would have gladly watched Caylee when CA went to her fake job.

      I know someone got rid of information about CA on the internet. She loved Caylee so much! Couldn't have been that much she tossed Caylees ashes in the trash? The matching necklaces Cindy got made with some of Caylee's ashes. It was all over the internet a few years ago. Anything dealing with her throwing Caylee away for the 2nd time has vanished! She is beyond disgusting, disturbing, deviant, vindictive, sadistic & Sheer evil!

    It is good for mental health professionals to have their own therapists. It’s quite a lot to shoulder this type of work, helping other people. Burn out is real, and sometimes CISD is needed if there are extremely difficult cases. This does not explain or excuse this therapists behavior. Her actions were completely unhinged.

    The reason mental health workers see someone is because of the high amount of burn out and to keep them sane. Imagine listening to others’ problems all day 5 days a week, for years and you can’t discuss them with anyone because of privacy issues. It is a recipe for disaster if the workers’ mental health isn’t taken seriously.
    The justice system dropped the ball with Pamala imho. It took them way to long to arrest her.
