Big thanks to ThreatLocker for sponsoring my trip to Black Hat 2025. To start your free trial with ThreatLocker please use the following link: www.threatlocker.com/davidbombal
Discover “Chasing Your Tail,” an open-source surveillance detection tool you can build with a Raspberry Pi. In this exclusive Black Hat interview, creator Matt explains how it tracks Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and even tire sensors to spot if you’re being followed, then flips the script to map where your followers spend time. Learn the origins of this tool, from avoiding surprise visits to protecting informants and aiding search & rescue. We cover the tech stack (Kismet, Python, GPS integration), real-world success stories, and how you can set it up yourself for under $100. Perfect for security pros, privacy
    advocates, and tech enthusiasts.

Raspberry Pi recently opened up the WiFi driver so can enter monitor mode on the built-in WiFi, so that may make it even more compact. This on a Zero with monitor mode on the inbuilt WiFi, now that would be something portable and discreet.

If stalkers are trying to steal Intellectual property from you worth hundreds of millions then the price is not sooo bad yeah ?
The 30 biggest countries on earth have agents funded and instructed to spy and steal data , innovations and information about the activities of other governments , corporations and individuals , They ALL do it , not just on defense material but everything from new medicines , food production and produce prices in your supermarket chains.
There is no such thing as privacy anymore and no such thing as antivirus , firewalls or encryption , they can all be hacked , all you can do is make it harder for them to do it.

but they are humans , they can get lazy and make mistakes. I have even witnessed first nation countries making massive mistakes despite having hundreds of employees in security where they had vulnerabilities that a 10 year old kid could waltz right through.
An example is the computer server of a defence agency had a login name of Admin , and password was also Admin , they had millions of pages of sensitive data stolen by a northern emerging nation.

Most people are ignorant beyond there own comprehension even those with high IQ(sometimes they can be the most brainwashed/hypnotized). Plato’s Allegory Of The Cave ring a bell….NO? You live a life of illusion and it’s so obvious. We are nothing more then modern day slaves are freedom is just a big illusion and the world is nothing but a stage. The hard part is having enough courage to see it then escape it. Most people unless things change will never know and by the time they do it will be far too late

I treated my ex like a queen. I gave her everything she wanted, and more, but it wasn’t enough. Finding out that she was cheating on me was utterly devastating. The hardest part to accept is that she was in her 50’s, and sleeping with guys in their 30’s. Not because they were younger guys, but because I figured a 50 year old woman wasn’t capable of this. 6 years down the drain, but a valuable lesson learned. *Perry Moskva* is very calming and your insight is invaluable.

Interestingly enough, I have actually used similar tactics; Around April 5th my Wi-Fi Pinapple was duplicating networks dubbed "T-14, T-16..." etcetera. I recorded the MAC(s), and other related data. Mind you, I lived in the country. An area that had little-to-no traffic. Turns out, they were cop cars. This subsequently led me to track down the source with varying success

@howardsmith9417Lowjack uses a separation trigger to initiate. If the Lowjack key fob is not proximal to the LowJack installed tracker during vehicle movement, the tracker alerts LowJack HQ who should also alert the customer via email, at a minimum. I'm not aware of the communication method or protocol that they use regarding a one-time ping on startup or a constant ping while driving. I'm also not aware if the tracker module will arm should someone move the vehicle without powering the electrical system.

The hardest part to accept is that she was in her 50’s, and sleeping with guys in their 30’s. Google Maps (early on) was "creating Google Maps) with their vehicles, but was secretly war driving as well! Capturing WiFi packets and so on. Created a private map of devices in an area while taking a picture in the process.
Chasing your tail giving folks the same ability to war drive with purpose. Well that is quite lovely! It isn't just capturing data for data sake. Although if you slap on a semantic layer , you could very well start asking a prompt in natural language (NL) to give you back info
"What's the longest an address has been following me" and like clock work, you'd get this info back in NL.
Just a matter of escalation and user friendliness.
All stellar work, thank you so much for you sharing!

Old Wi-Fi devices used to broadcast the names of all saved networks, a big privacy risk, since anyone could track you by those SSIDs (“Ana’s Home”, “WorkWiFi”, etc.).
Modern systems (Android, iOS, Windows) don’t do that anymore.
They send mostly generic “who’s there?” probe requests and only a few targeted ones for networks they expect nearby.

ESP32-C5 i believe have 2.4 and 5 wifi + BLE and zigbee/thread. I think you can probably re-write what he's doing in RISCV assembly/C and then have a device that fits into an altoids box. I'm looking into it. It could either have a small OLED screen + battery + keys like meshtastic or have a companion app on android and switch between communicating with the phone using bluetooth and searching on bluetooth wireless band.
      EDIT: GO CLIPPY ARMY!!!

    • @PaulGrayUK
      @PaulGrayUK 8 months ago +5

You already can with an app, as scanning for WiFi and Bluetooth is done with many apps already, stitching it together, could knock and app version together with some AI assistance if needed, pretty easily, though would want dedicated phone ideally, but all very doable and been done kinda thing already. Heck been Kali full on phone pocket setups for many years already.
What I was thinking is that given the requirements, such a task could be refactored to run on a tiny ESP32, which I will do one weekend, spent this weekend making a bios for an old IBM PC so can upgrade the CPU without bios lockouts, side quest. Maybe next weekend. I'm on a roll. 😅

I built the same device to look out for my boss in 2014. even in 2017-8 I could collect hundreds of thousands devices (their macs and remembered networks) and know where do they live. I was lucky enough that I lived in the exact center of a touristy city.
after I had my huge database I made a wardriving setup and drove over 150km over the city building a DB to crosscheck with the first db. I only needed a perl script and tcpdump (or tshark, I don't remember anymore) so it could be ported to a raspi at any time. there was a catch though: apple phones were giving out fake addresses unless they got a handshake because Apple was always more secure than android, then windows phone did so-so in not spamming their probe requests while androids were literally screaming WHERE ARE MY FAVORITE NETWORKS CALLED X Y AND Z????

    • @lumikarhu

I Built pi zero w 2 that I use to track vehicle Bluetooth MAC address (mostly older vehicle are static MAC not dynamic Mac), I can also stick one in a wave guide to monitor or hunt for Bluetooth with directionality. It has monitor mode that pushes all the data to web server to via cell phone Wi-Fi hotspot, and push alerts if a new or targeted device detected. I’ve flown it on drone to survey larger areas. I passively collect everything.
It very close to the same thing, this guy doing though moving vs I’m stationary monitoring local air space. Cool to see others on the same wave length.

That's interesting! I did something similar to my Homassistant as a early detection thing! Kismet is great, but I've went with airodump running as a subprocess from a python script, I've tried bash but the CPU was heavily utilized I couldn't get it to work no matter what! The python script is looking for MAC and probes and the dynamic MACs are automatically rejected with a filter! Didn't give it a API yet but the output is in a log file and tranmits the findings over MQTT!
