Nextipac Fiestas de Santiago Apóstol 4K Walking Tour
The town of Nextipac belongs to the Municipality of Zapopan (State of Jalisco)
The traditional festival of Nextipac has been celebrating its patron Saint Santiago Apostle for more than 500 years.
The Tastoanes take over the city with their colorful masks to evoke the triumph of the indigenous people over the conquerors. Saint Santiago is the great honoree. The largest festival of the Tastoanes takes place in the community of Nextipac, although you can also find celebrations in Ocotán, Ixcatán, Tesistán and Tepetitlán on different dates. The main streets are filled with food, music and hundreds of games.
Saint Santiago, who is the patron saint of the town, is celebrated on July 25. These festivals last a week, during which dances such as those of the Tastoanes and Matachines are performed; there are musical bands and at night, fireworks and kermes.
In the traditional dance of Los Tastoanes, the battle that the indigenous people fought against the Spanish conquerors is symbolically represented. One of the main characters is Saint James, who, according to tradition, appeared in this battle and before whom the indigenous warriors put their skills into play.
