What better way to spend a winter long weekend than hiking the beautiful Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway in the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park.
The track is shared use, meaning that you will most likely encounter mountain bikes on the way. This is not too much of an issue, as for most of the way the track is a wide gravel road giving plenty of space for mountain bikers and hikers to travel easily abreast of each other.
The main route is 7km return to Waikino where the train to Waihi departs from. The DOC website states this is a 4hr return trip, but most hikers will be able to complete this within 3 1/2 to 3 1/4 hours. You have the option of returning via the Rail Tunnel Loop which will add at least 40mins and around 2km to your return time/distance.
Along this track you'll pass the Victoria Battery complex. Begun in 1896, Victoria Battery was a quartz crushing plant for gold extraction in Australasia, capable of crushing over 812 tonnes or ore each day to the consistence of sand. The "cyanide process" was used for extracting the gold from the ore by converting it to a water soluble complex.
Whereas Owharoa Falls is probably the biggest waterfall tourist attraction along this route, it is well worth taking the 5-10 minute side trail to the Karangahake Waterfall, which you'll find about 10-15 minutes along the track after the junction with Eastern Portal Bridge.

Since most of my work is performed completely by myself, I often have hiking/etc. videos running in the background. I haven't watched your videos in a while, so I started with your first one. I bet, with all you have accomplished in the past four years, that going through tunnels is no challenge at all anymore.
Remember going there once. When I lived in Auckland with my parents. Was pretty cool going through the old train tunnels.
Yes we recently had a chance to do the Windows Walkway, and it was fantastic! Such an interesting little day hike!
Me and my wife been to NZ for a month last year around New Year. We fall in love with this country so much that we want to come back. You're so blessed to live there. Loved your walk and video. So if we have to fly for 24 hours again to get to NZ so be it.
I am grateful for every day I get to spend in this beautiful country. You will get back here soon! Thanks for watching :)
@@LongWhiteGypsy You're truly blessed. There isn't a day my wife and I listen Live on internet radio from New Zealand. Every single day. That should tell you something. God bless.xx ...Here it a one of my videos about your lovely place. ruclips.net/video/V35vWBwerLE/видео.html&ab_channel=Photoforalifetime
That’s my kind of walk, flat with a bar at the half way point. Not far away at Thames is the Pinnacles walk. Book on line, stay overnight in a very smart hut complete with ranger and climb to the summit to watch the sunrise the next morning. It is designated as easy, it is not and you need a head for heights when making your way to the summit. I will definitely be doing the Karangahake track. Many thanks for the vid.
I'd love to give Pinnacles a go one of these days, but have heard it's a bit of a toughie! Also, I know the hut can be hard to book at certain times of year. But one day!
Its amazing ,must do thing in nz
It's actually between paeroa and waihi.A 10 min drive from paeroa heading towards waihi, driving through the karangahaki gorge. There are air vents from the old gold mining days that seem bottomless so take care if you are walking off the tracks.
