Everything you said makes sense. I woukd just add, select players that suit the system you're playing. If you want to keep the ball, select players that are comfortable with the ball at their feet. Don't say you want us to keep it and pick lati in midfield for eg. If we are pressing, pick players that are fit enough to run and close people down. Not people that are not playing and need to rest when we lose it. This would tie into what you said about form at clubs because man playing games are fitter.
