When my autistic son acted up at school here in CA (about a decade ago), and teachers were at wit’s end, they would put him in a room next to the principal’s office. It was all white, empty, no furniture, no books, nothing to do for hours except scream until he fell asleep. You can imagine our “burn it all down” reaction when we found out about it. The principal was fired.

He eventually was transferred to a private school for special needs kids, paid for by the school district.
He’s graduated now. He tunes pianos as a hobby, maybe a future career. Born with one ear, he can identify any note, tunes by ear, transcribes music note by note, no matter how many channels. All that other stuff is behind us now, he’s doing fine.

I've heard the Blood Eagle was never a real torture and is likely the result of a mistranslation in its description. Also, hanging in Henry VIII day was not done to be quick by breaking the neck like it was in the 19th century. It was meant to be a strangulation and torturous.

On the physical vs mental torture front, I have spoke to friends who are special forces about this before, and without exception, they all said they would rather be tortured physically than mentally.
Their primary reason for this judgement... The body will heal, but the mind won't. If your mind is broken, you will never be right again, and if the mind is gone, you are no longer really you anymore.

So, blood eagle is a complicated thing. In the sources it's called "rista örn" meaning "to carve the eagle." In the "Þáttr af Ragnars sonum", yes, it's described as you would expect it to be described based on the popular belief, but according to an Anglo-Saxon chronicle the victim of the blood eagle from this saga - king Ælla of Northumbria - died in battle, which lead some to believe "the blood eagle" is more of a poetical metaphor for dying in battle, because, well birds will appear on battlefields and will munch on those bodies. We have to remember that most of the Norse sources were written by Christians, who rarely had a good understanding of the original beliefs.
Of course, we also have the account of the execution of Torf-Einarr. There blood eagle is described as the sacrifice to Odinn (important to note human sacrifices weren't common for the Norse people. We only have accounts of sacrifices that are basically executions of those who committed crimes). It also seems to be implied that blood eagle, even if it was done, was reserved only for the worst of the worst for the worst of worst actions.

  • @GlidusFlowers
    @GlidusFlowers 3 дня назад

One of the reasons we aren’t sure if the Blood Eagle is real or not is that old Norse used a lot of Kenningar. Now basically, you could call them “euphemisms”, because instead of saying “there was a battle”, they would write “and thus went a sword-storm”.
What makes it more complicated is that the euphemisms were very context-heavy and were often either references to something or a methaphor, for example a hand was sometimes called “hawk-mountain” because of falconry, so without knowing the context of some of the writings it can be hard to know what specifically is meaning talked about.
Another layer of complexity is when they use a euphemism in a euphemism. If they say “hjörva viður” (sword-wood) it’s referring to a soldier, but by saying soldier it’s just referring to a man (regardless if it’s in the context of them being a soldier or not, it’s still a euphemism for a man)
So yeah we aren’t sure if the blood eagle was specifically the thing we think it is, or if in some cases it was an enigma of euphemisms

If you're being tortured for information, you'll say whatever you think the other person wants to hear, in order to make it stop. If you don't have the information the other person is seeking, you'll just make something up. That's what makes information obtained through torture inherently unreliable. Objectively speaking, torture does not work.
And torture as punishment is just cruelty for cruelty's sake, in my opinion.

9:12 - point of contention - the Thames does not lead directly to any ocean. But I'm being pedantic :-)

One has heard of young ladies (Victorian and/or Edwardian maybe) dying of suffocation having tied or in some way fixed their arms in a crucifixion pose when sleeping in order to keep their hands and arms fashionably pale. If you consider how repressed folk were in those days it is feasible that a young girl could be aware of distress without calling for help. On the subject of repression I heard the tale of a young man in a train compartment with no corridor, in the company of a woman. He badly needed to urinate but there was no opportunity to politely do this. The train arrived at its destination and the young man was unable to move. He was removed from the train and a doctor summoned. He died within one hour of a burst bladder.
Both of these stories could well be untrue but they're good eh?

    14:16; Your expression was priceless.
And justified. That was a very strange depiction of Jesus' crucifixion.
