That's too bad about Ong Tong. After watching your previous video about it, I tried looking for the place but failed. I didn't want to switch data roaming on, so without google maps I tried to rely on memory 🥴 I did however find The Exorcist barber shop.. took a pic & it was quite the hit on my FB page.
On The Chef's menu, there is a pic of a croissant stuffed with veggies but I couldn't match it with any menu item. After enquiring, I was told it was the 'pan fried egg' 😄 (there is an accompanying pic of fried eggs with sausages which I thought was a separate menu item). The bread was delicious, so I'm wondering if The Chef bakes its own?
I've stayed at Manonta Budget Hotel (6:39) before but didn't know about the places you covered in this video.. so thanks for that. I recall seeing a Mr. Steak somewhere near the Emperor Hotel (New Market area?) and intend to try it sometime. I used to really enjoy Jeffer Steak on Supasarnrangsan Rd but that closed, then the one at Diana closed too. I presume the one at Central Festival is still open.. hopefully! 🤞

Yes, it is a shame about Ong Tong. I'm trying to find out if it has closed for good or whether it has moved to another location. It's still on Google Maps, but not actually there. Do they turn your head 180° when cutting your hair at the Exorcist barber shop?!
We still go to Chef fairly often and still enjoy it. I don't think they bake their own bread.
When I referred to some branches of Mr Steak not being very good, I was actually referring to the one you mentioned! The last time I went there, the food and the service were both poor.
That Jeffer steak house on Supasarn was previously called something else - the Bt39 steakhouse, or something. I used to eat there. It was on the corner. I don't know why it closed, but it's been closed quite a long time now. I'm also not sure about other branches of Jeffer as I haven't eaten at a Jeffer steakhouse for a very long time. Thanks for all your comments!

@@expatlivinginthailand My comment keeps disappearing, so I'm gonna try again. When you mentioned this hotel name (3:08), I paused the video & figured out that you were reading the top line. It's written in commercial font, so is นิวสืลมโฮเตล the correct spelling in standard font? Also, I can't figure out what that symbol is above the ต. I'm only about a quarter way through your web (written) tutorials, but I tried to compare that symbol against your tutorial index page & can't seem to find a match 🤔

@@visitstomyneighbours My comments also keep vanishing. That's RUclips for you. Your spelling is correct. That symbol is a vowel shortener and it's used in conjunction with the เ vowel.
On its own, the เ vowel makes an 'ay' sound. When it is used in conjunction with that symbol, it changes to an 'e' sound. The word for 'see' - เห็น - thus sounds like 'hen'. Without that symbol being there (เหน), it would be more like 'hane'.
One anomaly is the word for 'play', which is เล่น. It doesn't have that symbol, so it should sound like 'lane', but Thais pronounce it like 'len'.
You're doing really well. Pretty soon, you will be teaching me!

@@expatlivinginthailand เล่น reminds me of a euphemism I came across on another channel - เล่นกีฬาในร่ม 😂 (I didn't recognise ฬ and ใ at first but found them on your tutorial index page)

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  5 месяцев назад +1

@visitstomyneighbours That’s a new one for me, but I can guess what playing indoor sports might mean! ใ is exactly the same as ไ but the former is only used in about 20 words. ฬ is quite rare. It's used in the words for sport, watch/clock, Chulalongkorn (king/university), but you don't see it very often.

Because of Hari Rayo holiday here in Narathiwat every business was closed for about a week. There weren't any fresh markets either. Very inconvenient if you hadn't bought your food beforehand, like we hadn't.😂
Now it's back to normal. Hopefully Butterfly Cafe is back up and running. I remember the place, as my wife likes to frequent the plant shop opposite.

Thank you! It was still closed today, so that's over a week. I suspected a Muslim holiday, but this one seems particularly long. Isn't this also the time when Muslims go off to Saudi for the Haj pilgrimage? That's right. On the other side of Rajyindee Road are several large garden centres. Very handy for stocking the garden!

A lot of changes since I was there.
    Tasspun is a good place.
Is boat bakery still around? I remember that place being ok.

The Boat - yes and no. This was another long-term Hat Yai institution. The restaurant downtown had been there for around 40 years when I got to Hat Yai, but sadly, it closed several years ago.
The owner opened another shop, quite close to PSU, but it's very different. Their main business now, it seems, is making custom cakes. I've bought some birthday cakes there for the kids. Not cheap, but they can do any design you want. A few years ago, a friend got a birthday cake for me, complete with a footballer in West Ham colours. It was almost too good to eat!

I think there is a western restaurant opposite Indra Hotel. I don't know if the restaurant is still available after the pandemic.

Post Laser Disc is opposite the Indra. Many years ago, it had a lot of foreign customers and served a lot of Western food. But not any more. Is that the place you meant?

Whenever you see English on menus it means there are hotels, attractions, or expat neighbourhoods nearby 😀
