The Island of Ioannina is one of the few inhabited lake islands in Europe which is located on Lake Ioannina (Pamvotida). It is called "Island of Ioannina" or "Island of Ioannina" or "Island of the lake" and has about 219 inhabitants (2011 census), a community of mainly fishermen. Nisaki is one of the two inhabited islands in a lake in Greece, the other is Agios Achilleios of Prespon.
The Island of Pamvotida is also known as the island of Mani, as it is said that the first inhabitants of the Island had come from Mani towards the end of the 16th century. The first name given by the inhabitants of Mani was the name Thevetos.
Aslan Pasha coming from Mani brought to Ioannina slaves from Mania who knew how to fish and who came from the shores of Mani. They initially lived on the opposite shore of the Island and started fishing to survive. However, because the thieves were looting them, the monks of the monasteries asked them to come to Nisaki to sit and fish. The presence of the Mani on the Island resulted in the cooperation with the monks and they helped the monks in the charitable work of the time which was great.
The settlement of the island is also officially declared a traditional settlement as it is built following the traditional continental architecture with the characteristic slate roofs. The settlement is located at the northern end of the island and consists of about 110 houses opposite the settlement of Amphithea.
A pine-covered rock, whose area does not exceed 200 acres, with a traditional Epirus settlement, made of stone. In Lilliputia inland and on its shores, built next to each other almost, seven Byzantine and post-Byzantine monasteries form a monastic state for centuries, which is the third largest in Greece, after Mount Athos and Meteora.
The two Byzantine monasteries, Philanthropinon and Stratigopoulou, have great historical and religious value. The homonymous aristocratic families, who built them, left the city after its conquest by the Crusaders in 1204 and took refuge in the Despotate of Epirus. Stone, with wooden, finely carved iconostasis and hagiographies of unique art, the monasteries are exquisite examples of Epirus art, which mixed the Cretan painting tradition with Western styles.
The current museum of Ali Pasha is housed in the cells of the monastery of Agios Panteleimon, where it ended. Typical detail are the holes in the floor from the bullets that cut the thread of his life. You will also have the opportunity to see local costumes and documents of the time, as well as many of the special items of Ali Pasha.
The Island of Ioannina is famous for its fine cuisine. Fried frogs, eels, trout and carps attract those who crave special flavors and gastronomic pleasures.
One can visit it daily as there are boat trips from the pier of Ioannina every half hour.
