Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (Nintendo DS) - Retro Game Review - Tamashii Hiroka

- Today Tamashii reviews Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS, games she's notorious for hating but recently had a change of mind about. Did Pokemon Platinum salvage the generation? How do they stack up when compared to past Pokemon games like Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire and present day games like X &Y and Pokemon Sun and Moon?

Man. You know you're old when Pokemon DP is a freakin RETRO review.
Shaneoblack Holy shit
no
Holy shit tell me about it. The first five minutes of the video explain perfectly why there's such a divide in pokemon fans; i didn't realize half the base started on DP... when i finished high school hahaha
Dude playing this game nearly 12 years ago says something
shaneoblack Oh man right? I still remember when I first got it, and I'm only 28.
'Saving a lot of data.'
My god, the horrible memories... I switch one pokemon from a party and PC box... "Saving a lot of data."
Don't even get me started on the 6 Pokemon a day limitation in the DPPt's PalPark.
Why did I laugh out loud at this.
jiikuncorner amen
AbdallahSmash026#1Fan to u maybe but i hate that especially when u do something simple and then the game goes saving lot's of data
The clock thing spins 10 times I swear I counted
Diamond and Pearl are "retro" games now? Excuse me while I go check into a nursing home.
Name Definition of retro is recent past
Basically what Tamashii is trying to say is that if you want a Sinnoh game then get Platinum
The thing that kind of annoys me is how whenever people defend Ruby and Sapphire they ALWAYS bring up Emerald and the much needed upgrades it brought but when talking about how they dislike diamond/pearl they don’t bring up how all those issues are subtly fixed in Platinum
That is why I always wait for the third version just like with emerald and I know is not good for the consumer cuz you have to played the next "full experience" version, but it come down to one thing... money😅
I recently played my old copy of platinum which I upgraded from pearl as a kid. I did not remember the pacing being this bad in pearl, and really hope they just remake platinum.
I know, Right? 😊😊
Mega Leaf Blade yes but as she says it’s only a bandaid
You say that Barry didn't learn patience but the fact that his team gains both a Heracross AND a Munchlax either means that he is extremely lucky or learnt a little patience since they are both obtained from Honey Trees.
Yup, gamefreak always does that, teching the player that a character had development through subtleties. Another good example would be Silver, he has a Crobat as part of his final team and the only way to get those is to evolve a Golbat via happiness and that means that he learned to care for his team.
Not only that but Silver also has a Gengar and Alakazam which means he probably found a friend to reverse trade with. If he stayed bitter and mean he would be stuck with the middle stages.
mrsylar91 Blue also had a Kadabra. Who did HE trade with
*I am going to fine that munchlax*
The Treyceratops Bill.
"Flogging this dead pony again just in time for the inevitable remake!"
*four years later...*
It’s funny that in the year you made this comment, BDSP came out lol.
Tamashii: Sinnoh as a region is badly designed.
People who live in Hokkaido: Excuse me?
no its not
sammy lorince did you read the comment
This was the last region that really required HMs for navigation. Black and White onward slowly began to recant that kind of gatekeeping in exchange for more convenient forms, such as making HMs only needed for optional areas in Unova and Kalos to the PokeRides in Alola, and finally the Rotom Bike in Galar
Honestly I know the point of hoenn is that half of it is water but water on the GBA is never as interesting as different land environments.
Just because it's based on a real place, doesn't automatically mean it's good design or that it'll work as a map in a video game..
Okay, you can say what ever about Diamond and Pearl,
But don't you dare disrespect 6 Magicarp guy! He is an integral part of every Pokemon game!
Black and white says hi
There's 1 in black and white with all like level 60 magikarp or something right above undella town
Good old Fisherman Andrew.
... I hate that guy.
As dumb as the 6 Magikarp guy is, I like having a trainer my underleveled Grass and Electric types can 6-0 sweep with no issue.
I used to dislike it happening in every game, but then I started using that specific trainer to help level up my weaker Pokémon. It helped that I didn't have to worry about super effective moves so early in the game. It's actually how I got my Budew to evolve when I first played through Platinum. It was my first time having a Roselia cause I didn't have any friends to trade with for my Emerald game. I actually liked that it wasn't mandatory to trade with someone else in order to enjoy any of the Pokémon games.
The gen 4 remakes should have Bidoof as the only ride Pokemon.
No, make it THE starter
No plz no
But surfing on a magikarp is sooooo ridiculous 😂
my man
Gen 4 Remake Exclusive Mon; Balloon Bidoof
I love how the guy with six Magikarp is put in as a specific plot point. 😩👌
s/o to Marriland ❤️
TamashiiHiroka His ev training guide is the reason Im playing to this day.
One day I hope to emulate him by using my own team of Magikarp in Moon's Battle Spot.
And also that one Cooltrainer from XD Gale of Darkness by having a team of pokemon that all know Self-destruct or Explosion and use only that for the whole battle. Just to make the other guy go "What the fuck? Who does that?"
Hey they had too make the plot look more interesting
Me during the plot analysis
1st Hour: okay
3rd hour: oh man
7th hour: okay got it
20th hour: holy shit really i dont remember Diamond being this long
34th hour: What the fu....
Is that a The Lonely Goomba reference? :3
I felt like my head exploded around the 15th hour.
I don't think I have ever had a playthrough go more than hour 22 when I don't get sidetracked with Contests or trying to find specific pokemon or the optional areas like Iron Island.
Well, I defeated Cynthia in my 25th hour, so...
I wasted time in some occasions, tho
Sword and Shield are not even 20 hours long and feel lacking in more ways than these games
Ah, yes, Diamond and Pearl. The games where the Electric Gym leader has 2 electric types and the Fire Elite Four has 2 fire types.
I mean in Platinum he has all Elecric types and they're ALL weake to earthquake and can barely touch a ground type because they didn't give him any coverage for Electric's one glaring weakness, so I genuinely don't believe it when he's like "Life sucks cuz I win all the time and I don't get a challange..." because I swept with a swords dance Gliscor. Dude would've been murdered by Bertha if he attempted the Elite Four like he was going to
I actually subscribed years ago when you put up the original ruby/sapphire reviews
ChippyGaming omg, Hey James!
ChippyGaming Mein Gott... You're here? You're the last person I would expect here 😛

The Treyceratops idk XD
I like dogs and CHICKEN TASTES REALLY GOOD if its made by someone who knows what they're doing.

Are we getting to the point where DS and Wii are gonna be considered Retro? Time sure flies
But... but Ubisoft is still making Just Dance games for the Wii :D
Felicia is a really good Mage counter in FE:H
Severa4Life Except Reinhardt
As a long-time lover of Pokemon D/P/Pt, I thank you for pointing out its positives and flaws. Before watching this video, I placed the games in an "ideal" light where I perceived them as perfect. Really, from realising that these games have some bits that can be improved, it now makes me like them even more. Sinnoh has been my favourite region and the games have always been close to my heart however, I appreciate that you acknowledged the good (as well as the bad), presenting your opinion with well thought-out evidence. Thank you, I really enjoyed this video!
Agreed. Even though I kinda enjoy these games; more specifically Platinum, I won't denied it's criticism that the game has & some people will probably say " it's not that bad ". Oh! But it is.
I would hope Game Freak would make good remakes of these games but after Gen 7 and seeing how Gen 8 is about to turn out, I am not looking forward to any remake honestly.
@@jjc4924 isn't platinum a improvement though?
@@M3rtyville was gen 7 really that bad? I don't think so...
they are perfect
I especially agree with your comments on the layout of the region. Conceptually I really like the idea of Sinnoh; there aren't many regions in Pokémon that utilize a colder climate. I also think the idea of a big, centralizing mountain could've been really neat.
Instead, however, it ends up being super annoying, as you point out. Mt. Coronet is one of the most frustrating sections in any Pokémon game and I always hated traversing it.
I didn't mind Diamond and Pearl as much as you but this review is really well done and I totally get all the places you're coming from.
RadiantChaos I never played gen 4 (I didn't even own a ds which is sad since I grew up with the gen four anime) but when I saw a map of sinnoh I thought to myself "this place is gigantic yet they didn't use most of the space"
RadiantChaos i sooo agree! I agree with all the points of Tamashii!😍😍😍😍😉
EVEN WORST , THE GAME IS FUCKING SET TO FUCK YOU IF YOU DIDN'T CHOOSE DUMB STARAVIA OR LUXRAY! LIKE WHY DOES FANTINA'S MISMAGIUS HAVE MAGICAL LEAF? WHAT OF I WANNA PLAY WITH BIBAREL?😤😤😤😤😤
So because i don't have the conventional combo of staravia x luxray , i have to grind at EVERY GYM! And don't let me talk about the berries!
Also the Touchscreen was not goodely used at all..........
ALTHOUGH Gen 4 reaply helped competitive , connected everyone and was their first game on DS, and it could have been worse, and the graphics are good!😍😍😍😍😍
I am playing Platinum and like Gen 4 , bit it sure has it's flaws, even more cz it was Gamefreak's first experience on the DS!
RadiantChaos :o we got the same character as a profile pic
Raphaël Khoury Wtf man you dont need both of them in diamond/pearl
boomboy b
If you had said, "this is such a giagantic place and yet they didn't you much of the space" it would've rhymed, no real reason for bringing it up, just thought it was neat.
This video was definitely worth the wait, amazing job! Pearl is one of the games I played the most as a kid (toss up between that and Ruby) and while it'll always be special to me it is easy to see it through nostalgia glasses. Going back to Sinnoh I do notice that it's far slower than I ever remembered - the surfing speed is unbelievable - And though I've seen a lot of the improvements Platinum made through research, I've never actually played it so I wonder how much it really does improve the experience. I'm glad you mentioned the Pokemon diversity throughout the region because that's one thing that's always bothered me - like it's probably the worst of any Pokemon game ever lol. It's true for me too that the music is honestly one of the biggest highlights of the game - because even if I'm not actually playing the game the music makes me revisit Sinnoh most days haha. Long wall of text aside, thanks for an awesome video! :D
CandyEvie hey Lucy ur awesome I love ur pokemon videos
CandyEvie yeah,i agree it was worth a wait. What is your opionion on diamond and pearl
CandyEvie hi!
Lucy wassup I guess poketubers even go this far to watch others I didn't know Tamashii had connections with anyone
Amen
Jeez, Tamashii Hiroka almost never puts out any content lately. What a slacker.
*50 minute long video comes out* Never mind. I said nothing.
I'm so excited to watch this.
Edit: Out of the Pokemon games I've beaten (SoulSilver, Black 2, Yellow, X, and Platinum, in that order, and there are multiple others I've played part of), Platinum is my least favorite, though I still like it. Helping Mira out of Wayward Cave is my least favorite thing I've ever done in a Pokemon game; I just found it really tedious. But the game still has charm.
Edit2: Halfway into the video. This is really good story analysis.
Edit3: Something about hearing Tamashii get angry is satisfying, considering I feel like she's usually holding back a lot. I actually wish all the swears were unbleeped.
Doctor Eggnog 50 MINUTES!? Didnt notice till you said so
Me too
Same
Chicken scratch Same 😂
I'm taken aback just from the cut up footage and logged gameplay.
"In any Pokemon game, they give you a degree of freedom. You can explore the region at your own pace without them holding your hand too much."
I wish this was still true for the new games.
Diamond and Pearl.... retro games. Oh my God I feel old.
terriblethomas101 same
Now you know how us folks who started off with Red and Blue feel 😁😁
How many years make something retro?!
they werent launch titles they game out relatively late. I think Gold and silver were for the GB colour. Or maybe Im being dumb and there never were lauch(pokemon) titles.
I don’t really consider it retro because DS games are still backwards compatible with a current console but I still feel old
Even with the criticisms of D/P's narrative, I still feel it's head and shoulders above Kalos. Team Flare - Lysandre, especially - had the most convoluted, disjointed motives and methods I've seen. At least I can *sort* of define why Cyrus did what he did, even if his gripes with the world were seemingly unfounded. Lysandre's just "something something beauty, something something destroy the world."
thewhatness Lysandre's motives were definitely clear. Maybe you just tapped A too many times.
thewhatness "But enough talk! I'll stop you with my team of like four level 40 pokemon!"
Yeah, Team Flare was all over the place. Gen 7 did it better, but SM have different issues.
Well, Lysandre was already setting himself up as a very capable, charismatic and eccentric man anytime you saw him before the big reveal. He, however, is also smart and prideful. He knows all the arguments that could be made about his views and has weighed them and has himself decided that his views are correct and that no one can sway his biases. So he carries on doing what he feels he has to do. The main issue is Team Flare who made it seem like they were only about *Style* and on their high horse. (just how team Galactic was in act 1 of DP) The reveal itself was pretty instant, not to mention the legendary Pokemon were never mentioned before their reveal even though they were a key part of their plan. However, Lysandre did express an interest in mega Pokemon which are linked to the flower canon thing. I'd say Lysandre's abit more fleshed out than Cyrus the character but Team Galactic seems more useful to Cyrus than Team Flare is for Lysandre.
Gen 6 was the best gen LUL
Who even bothers with Diamond and Pearl when Platinum exists?
Nathan Njose
Eh, I played through both just to get the version exclusives you can’t get in Platinum for some reason :/
Nathan Njose you are totally correct
Nathan Njose Diamond and Pearl are almost unplayeable too, so glad Platinum speed things up and made a way better plan
Me because I didn't have money and didn't know Platinum would be so different.
Nathan Njose Same. I love Sinnoh and Platinum was the best representation.
who is here after the remake announcement. lol
"Tamashiihiroka..." *sips glass*
"I have not heard that name in a long time."
Damn, did I really type this two years ago?
You sure did.
Diamond and pearl confusing map is why black and white Is just a circle that you move around in one direction
Trust me, Unova is actually a lot less straight forward than you’ld expect. You probably wont even think its a circle like that unless you look at the Town Map.
@@Haha_You_Fool Respectfully disagree. When I first played Black and White as a kid, I didn't even really notice that the that the map was linear from the town map. It was only when I got to the 6th/7th gym did I realize how linear the map was. It becomes even more noticeable when you notice repetitive patterns in the map design and in the story structure. Go to a route, get into a dungeon, fight team plasma, sometimes there is more route to get through, sometimes you get into the city, fight Gym Leader. Sometimes they change it up by changing when you fight team plasma, or by forcing you to explore slightly beyond the city, but generally it follows that formula. Its linearity also makes exploration a lot less interesting, since most of it just falls down to "go to previous area with new HM move and you get an item". Sometimes you might find a cave with a legendary or a new route, but the amount of times you find that is minimal compared to Sinnoh or Hoenn. Sinnoh in particular had so much extra life in its world by having all of these different optional routes, such as the mansion on Route 212. Worst part is, the change in map design doesn't even address many of the issues Tamashii pointed out in this video. Backtracking still sucks since there are now 0 shortcuts to previous eras unlike Sinnoh where even though backtracking took a lot of time, you still had shortcuts such as the ramp north of Oreburgh. In the original Black and White, your only option is to backtrack through the entire progression of the game, on fairly long routes, but more importantly on giant bridges that while look cool and epic the first couple of times through, just drag on and on. It also doesn't help that the story doesn't commit to such a linear progression with there being moments where you have to go to previous areas to deal with Team Plasma, forcing to use HM Fly in a game that seemingly tried to significantly reduce the need of HM moves for the primary quest.
@@Absolute_Zero7 the map is less linear in black and white 2, just my opinion though.
The issue with the linear argument is that Unova is based on Jersey, Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn, all very organized and linear locations, there isn't much potential, which may just be a consequence of choosing an american city: ultimately the only positive of the map is the unique locations. ALL of Unova's locations look MUCH more diverse, identifiable and aesthetically pleasing, Virbank, Castelia, nimbasa, Driftveil, Opelucid, lacunosa, Undella, nacrene, compared to the just, what the hell of Sinnoh. Locations are recognizable and have some form of function: Castelia as the massive economic jewel of Unova, the presence of artists and cultural significance of nacrene, the tourist trap and Broadway aura of nimbasa, the grungy slums of Virbank, the village bridge and lacunosa as story tellingfeatures, etc. There's a fundamental emphasis on appeal and differentiation, while Sinnoh seems more idk, repetitive and just very unpleasant as a region. Even small things like the RVs scattered across Unova, the former castles, the subways travelling under bridges, and the bustling malls provide the region more personality
Diamond and Pearl are retro now? I guess this is what it's like to feel old.
Heinrich Agrippa
For sure they are. In my experience (as a predominately retro gamer) the retro community usually feels that anything that is more than a generation old is retro or if it's over a decade old. So the PS2, NDS, GameCube, Xbox, and even Wii are retro. A lot of people think of early PS3 and Xbox 360 as retro. Portables also get labeled as retro quicker as mobile technology jumped so dramatically within the last decade. We went from the NDS/PSP to the Switch, hell even the 3DS/Vita to the Switch was huge. Like the PSP feels retro, though so does the 3DS, especially the early titles.
Compare that to previous jumps, GameBoy/Game Gear/Lynx to the GBA wasn't anywhere near the jump that the NDS to Switch was. GBC was a dumbed down NES and the GBA was a slightly better SNES (but with worse sound). The jump in mobile tech has been real since ~2006/7.
Okay I am starting to get a little concerned. Are you still there? Please just make something even if it is just a 5 minute video saying you aren't dead.
I'm not dead, I am in fact doing great. Since posting this video I have gone back to school full time and gotten a job to support that so I just don't have any free time to work on any content. I appreciate the concern, but no content =/= might as well be dead! lol
Ok. That's a relief. Well I'm glad you're doing well. Just gave some of us a scare there. Still, glad you're doing well.
@@Tama-Hero hope your doing well i went through college and worked full time depressing and feels like world passes you by
How odd i came back to check this channel out just to see this be posted
RIGHT? Same exact thing happened to me
Tamashii uploading is like Christmas
So everytime Tamashii uploads a video you have to see family you don't care about and get asked questions you rather not talk about? Seems tough.
Ugy Boogie 😂
Random Master LOL 😂 XD
ya
Random Master Tamashii is literally Christmas wearing a hat
You know what could fix most, if not all of the problems you have with these games? Remakes. These games need remakes more than any previous games
Platinum was kind of a remake but I know that isn't what you meant. I know they will eventually remake these games and it will for sure fix some problems but I think there will be new problems. I think they will treat you like a 2 year old in the remakes like every Pokemon game from X and Y on wards have. I am probably going to get a little hate for sort of slagging off Sun and Moon but I did like them. Just I think they were way to easy and were no where near as good as most people think. At least to me.
I agree. Black and White were fast paced and the story made sense, they and BW2 felt polished. XY are somewhat bland, SM have extremely strong pros but also massive weakpoints.
I agree with that. But also ORAS was way too simplified, especially for it being a remake of a perfectly fine game. They out right give you a Legendary and it just felt very simple. Sure I liked all the Pokenav stuff and I am not a multiplayer guy but for just the main game, I'd rather play R,S,E.
Eh, with writing skills like that... maybe a 2-year-old's game is warranted. Can't really put in my 2 cents since I burned out on Pokemon after I lost 2 copies of Pokemon X and replayed it a third time. But every game gives you a legendary, it's only really your fault if you kill it. Also, i had a hard time with X's elite 4 because of my team comp; it was crap. Low leveled, lack of good type coverage, and lop-sided exp. Then i learned Barbaracle curb stomps them :x
KRX50 "More than any previous games before", just how???? Must I remember you that by the time we got to the first ds games, the only Johto games were gameboy, all-in-8-bit games ? That is what I call OUTDATED. Diamond and Pearl in comparison are still playable on the actual support, no 8-bit limitations and even have 3D graphics in them. They're far from outdated, just aged a bit.
I think some of you don't realize how much work she did to do this video. A TON of effort was put in this review. Quality over quantity! Besides she has to have a life outside RUclips also
And making time-stamps in the process, don't forget that.
Am I an outlier? I started with gen 1 and gen 4 is still my favorite gen. Platinum and HGSS are the best. I understand your criticism though :)
HGSS are the perfect Pokémon games.
All the good things of Gen 2 (Johto + Kanto) plus all the good things of Gen 4 (physical/special split, Wifi Connection, Battle Frontier).
For me those will forever be the best Pokémon games.
@@TheoneandonlyBobb They were also the last pokémon games where Game Freak had the "all-in" mentality where they tried to outdo themselves and make the game as complete as possible. As a result HGSS was the last pokemon game that truly felt complete and not like something was left behind.
@@Absolute_Zero7 black and white 2:are we a joke to you?
@@joyconboyz4525 Black and White 2 fixed a lot of things but a lot of things were still missing. No battle frontier, Secret Bases and Berry Farming were limited to a no longer accessible online service, and the list goes on. BW2 were great games but they were at best side steps to HGSS
I feel even weirder because I started in gen 3 so I'm in the middle of the fire because people liking gen 1 and then you also have people liking Gen 4.
I know this game is slow, but honestly, when I was a kid, it took me months, and even a whole year to finish pokemon diamond. And the fact that it was so slow made me feel like the journey I went on was real. A pokemon game shouldn't be something that can be finished in only three days, and that is the problem I have with most of them. (Trust me, I finished pokemon sun in 3 days... And I was really disapointed) Pokemon games are supposed to be a journey, remember ? Not a healthy walk that you go on because you're bored.
Anicée Amet well I’d argue if it took a year to finish a pokemon game, there is something wrong with the games design. I take my time with completing the games, especially when I replay them, and it’ll take me a couple of months to finish them usually.
I do think there is a difference in playing the game as a kid as opposed to do it as a teenager/adult. As a kid we have ALL the time in the world to play the game in a way where it takes a year to finish, when we get older we don’t have that kind of time anymore. I remember being a kid playing Pokémon Silver and doing all of the events and it taking almost a year to finally get to Red. As an adult I can do that in a fraction of that time, it’s not because I rushed through it, it’s because I played it in a way that progressed through the game normally. Sorry you didn’t like Sun, I had my own problems with it. Maybe the next installments will have better pacing and stuff to do that will make the experience enjoyable for both of us.
Just because you took your time playing a game as a kid doesn't mean this game's cripplingly slow pace isn't a negative attribute.
Sure, it's a journey... but... a year is a bit much... no, it's way too much. Sure, if you take a year because of all the extra stuff, that'd be one thing... also, it's HOW it makes you take time. It's like making an anime series longer by adding filler that feels needless. Like, if it's slow because it has a lot of content, then it's one thing, but if it's slow because you are trudging through mud... yah....
But in reality, I bet if there were no roadblocks, the game would take half the time. And the post game still pales in comparison to the length of Gen 2 with Kanto AND Stadium 2.
I guess if you were a kid, it's understandable you took a year... when I was like 4-7 my older brother let me play his copy of Pokémon White 2, and I never even beat Cheren because I didn't even know what levels were. I literally just charged at him and get thrashed by his Patrat using Work Up. When I picked the game up again when I was 11-12, I finally beat him by the hair of my head because I was too lazy to grind my Riolu.
Holy shit Tamashi this video was incredible. A video essay on Pokémon games is honestly something I wish more people tackled. Your points were well-made and backed up well, and I feel like your confidence in speaking and being onscreen has improved so much over the years. You're doing great work, it's been really cool to see you grow as a content creator, keep it up!
Seeing how you end with a point on that "the music is good" I might as well share my view on that. The Diamond and Pearl soundtrack is one of my favourite soundtracks in gaming, earning a spot just below my love for the Crash Bandicoot 2 soundtrack. Pokémon music is generally really good, however, I have one exception. I hate the music in the original Ruby and Sapphire. I just hate it, I can't stand the trumpet noise that they put in every, single, track in that game. It's too much, it washes out the other sounds. It feels out of place compared to other Pokémon games too. I'd go in depth on that but no-one's gonna read a 3 page RUclips comment.
So, sorry about this comment being only half-related but I'd like to know what you think about that. A video about game music might actually be really interesting.
The sound fonts in the GBA were pretty limited and they relied heavily on one or two for most of the songs in the game. So I can see how it was annoying for some people, and I have always hated how FRLG sounded. Ruby and Sapphire hit my specific nostalgia buttons though so that never bothered me as much.
TamashiiHiroka I can see how the FRLG Soundtrack doesn't quite do it for you. Or ehm... hear, rather. It's not exactly what I imagined those sound bits to be either. To me when I listen to Diamond/Pearl, black/white, even X/Y I feel like that's what they wanted Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver and Crystal to sound like if they could. It's what I imagine it to sound like listening to those chiptunes at least.
Sound's a very interesting subject, isn't it.
How is this comment from 6 days ago when this video was roughly uploaded 4 minutes ago?
LangeManGlenn subbox
Razing Flame I was about to ask the same thing
I saw this video for the first time because of the remake announcement.
This and the Fire Red/Leaf Green video showed me that the problems people are having now are very similar to the problems back then.
Let’s Go, like Fire Red, was a tech demo from things to come.
Sword and Shield, like Diamond and Pearl was an awkward first attempt to deal with a dramatic shift in hardware.
The Sword and Shield DLC and Legends are like Platinum and Soul Silver and Black and White, since they show Gamefreak getting better and better at designing for the Switch.
And I’m sure when fans of the 3D era grow up and get more vocal online, those games will get the praise the GBA and DS games do now.
I pretend that Diamond&Pearl never happened. Platinum was the last overall masterpiece after Emerald. Then the rest is Gamefreaking stealing money with double releases of games, i don't care for how good Heartgold& Soulsilver were (despite that i think that Gen 2 is the worst gen of all time) and Black and White 1&2 (the last good gen), Platinum is just one game and has a lot of good things going for it for the price.
I don't know how I even got here but I watched the entire video. The thing that stands out to me the most isn't so much the review or the reasoning. The editing is really good and funny at times- the laughs made me interested in checking out the other vids you have. This seems like it took an extremely long time to not just record all the clips, but cut up and reposition every single clip to line up with the audio. Every aspect of this seemed really difficult to make. Great job.
Lol hi
Diamond was my third Pokemon game, so I don't have a "first game bias" and I think the reason why I like Sinnoh so much is the Pokemon, and how the whole region is so colorful and the music and style of the game is so memorable. A lot of Sinnoh Pokemon are some of my favorites.
All Usernames Taken route 209 tho 👌
I started with gen 3 but I don't really like much music or anything from gen 4. For some reason I probably likely gen 5 and especially the music from it.
You could literally say that about any Pokemon region. The music is always great and the region's always look great. Well, maybe not always for that one.
The whole atmosphere is just great. We are talking about Super Metroid levels of great. Who doesn't remember the rainy route? I have to admit the music is half of it, but still.
The underground bases is what really sold things to make it my favourite generation. I started with gen 2, then gen 1, gen 3, then this. And it's easily my favourite because online play became a thing back then, but thankfully the series wasn't so bloated at the time.
Started with gen 1
Skipped over gen 2 & 3
Got Platnium for my DS lite
Enjoyed the shit out of it
Diamond & Pearl are slow and lack good pokemon variety, I will admit that
Dertrex - I followed a similar route only I just skipped gen 2 and I got back into it after emerald. Pearl was the gen 4 game I played first and then I later got platinum which is def Top 3 Pokemon games of all time
they had less original pokemon because they gave 60 percent of old pokemon new cool evolutions
Dertrex - platinum is a whole lot better than Diamond and pearl.
Dertrex - You skipped third gen!!!
If you think Gen 4 is bad with Pokemon variety you should see Gen 5
Okay before Gym 1 not counting starters you can Have a Grass type, a water type, a fire type, a bug, flying, fighting, rock, ground, electric, psychic and poison type
In gen 5 before gym 1 not counting starters you have Normal and Dark and maybe a Grass/Fire/Water type if you really want the monkey to count
Seriously you have a good 40 Options available by Gym2 while in gen 5 you have literally 8, 9 if you really want to count Audino
For months now I've been thinking "Tama did a review on DPPt recently, I should rewatch them to see if her thoughts apply to BDSP"
Good lord, this 'recent' video is 6 years old.
No one is ganna mention that it took her 3 hours to battle the elite 4?! In what fucking universe?!
Wait, these games are considered retro now?
Man, I feel old
Over 10 years old... so yep.
For real, same af xD
Gen 4 is AWSOME for one big reason Bidoof!
Michael Switzer one *THICC* reason
Michael Switzer I think its awesome because of shinx!
bidOOF
Michael Switzer bidoof? Oh you mean HM slave right?
Yeah but that’s pretty much it.
"Here's the moment you've all been waiting for."
*gets minute long, unskippable ad*
That's the only moment I've been waiting for
Ghetis did the "non redeemable full evil" way better even. Thats because N is there to be the sympathetic one and to show how much of a jerk Ghetis is.
Man, this is bananas. You mentioned five years ago doing videos and made me realize I've been subbed to you for so long I can't really remember a time I didn't occasionally see your videos pop up in my feed.
Keep it up! The haters will find ways to hate no matter what.
Diamond and Pearl was the first Pokemon games I ever played. I have loved Pokemon ever since. It's all I ever did. I played and re played that game so many times I lost count. I see where you are coming from. No game is perfect. I agree that the game took forever. I would often get bored because it was taking forever to get anywhere. As much as I love the Diamond and Pearl games, I do agree they were to ambitious.
Actually getting started in the game took forever, I just wanted to earn badges not spend forever trying to speed run the start. Or maybe I'm just really impatient
Love the video!
Wolfie Cat "Love the video" *video hasn't even been out long enough to watch it all yet*
British Chicken so? I had been enjoying it so far.
Wolfie Cat "No game is perfect."
False, Red and Blue are perfect games, that's why they sold so many copies.
I completely agree.
paraGOnal tenDencies "red and blue are perfect games" holy shit you have to be wearing MASSIVE nostalgia glasses to think those glitch-filled, type-broken, battle-broken, (in MANY ways broken) and horribly sprited games are "perfect". lol
I got a depression ad while watching this video is RUclips trying to tell me something?
#Favoritetechnicallynotdeadyoutuber
To begin this comment, I feel like I should address that I bear no ill will with this comment, but rather I feel like I should defend Diamond and Pearl.
To be honest, I felt that you spent way too much of the video talking about minor problems and nitpicks. The positives, which cover things that I actually find important in a Pokémon game, feel glossed over by comparison (I don't actually feel like they were glossed over; the "by comparison" is key). I understand that people can place importance on different things, and that this is a huge reason why people have different opinions in the first place, but spending roughly a 5:1 ratio of negative versus positive is excessive regardless.
I also think that your idea on why Diamond and Pearl are so polarising isn't particularly accurate. I agree that loads of fans started with Diamond and Pearl, and loads more got back into the series with the games, but most of the negatives you mentioned about the games had nothing to do with a player's past experience with Pokémon, while the many of the positives did. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the theory should have the reverse effect, as people don't go into Pokémon games expecting a compelling story, at least prior to gen 5, and newer fans would be less appreciative of the changes that were made from gen 3. Of course, nostalgia is definitely a big factor, but this also applies to every other Pokémon generation. Claiming that the game is popular due to nostalgia is essentially meaningless unless you're comparing it to newer generations, and your comparisons to newer generations actually had positive things to say about Diamond and Pearl.
The third main issue I have with this video is the way you address those who defend the games, which portrays them as biased fanboys who hate you for having a different opinion, rather than people who respectfully disagree and have their own arguments that they'd like to share. Attributing this to them being young enough to have started later in the franchise than people who dislike gen 4 carries the misleading implication that they are less knowledgeable and less mature, making them seem intellectually inferior. I don't think that you were actively trying to be malicious here, but it definitely feels somewhat condescending, particularly to me since I'm someone who started with these games yet I strive to rate these games with the least bias possible.
Aside from these issues, and a few unimportant nitpicks, I enjoyed this video. While I disagree with you on a lot of it, I understand, respect and appreciate that we all look for different things in games, and found the problems you had with the game rather interesting to hear. This video gives me the impression that you too appreciate that we all look for different qualities in games; you are simply presenting your unique viewpoint, and I appreciate that.
Most of the people who bash her opinions on these games are biased fanboys though, if you have not been paying attention.
I have seen people call her names and give her unnecessary BS over this as if it was all that. It is just a game, so I do not see why people need to be such assholes.
Daniel Mejia That's true, but that doesn't represent the DP fanbase as a whole.
Her critisim on the plot was fairly accurate. The manga did everything better that she mentioned was bad.
@Shawn Javery It's not that it wasn't accurate, but rather that I felt like there was too much focus on it when, in my opinion, the plot is far from a crucial aspect of the game. If you do consider it to be a crucial aspect of the game, then fair enough.
She's speaking subjectivly from her experiences. She's bashed Sinnoh, and the angry vocal part of the fanbase railed against her, so it's the part that she knows best, because they're the loudest.
Honestly X and Y's pacing was even worse than diamond and Pearl's, the interval between badge 1 and 2 is awful, and then after badge 3 you suddenly start getting badges in a very fast pace, making the gyms very forgettable.
Yeah I agree, a lot of the problems that exist in X & Y were also problems I had with Diamond and Pearl. X & Y probably dealt with similar growing pains that Diamond and Pearl did due to moving to a new console, but they didn't give as much a shit that time around so instead of a game that's messy cause of poor decisions, it's a shallow game that's messy cause they just wanted to get a Pokemon game on a new console. IMO, the real definitive 3DS pokemon games are ORAS and SM. And maybe USUM if those are good.
Paolo Zambrana Nah Sun and Moon pacing is pretty disgraceful and it's far worse than XY and DP combined
Kaleb Grayheart I'd say that it's more of the slow-ass animations' fault, but yeah, they did have some pretty bad pacing issues.
KurataTrigger yeah you keep saying that maybe someone will believe you
Kaleb Grayheart D/P of course. X/Y may have bad pacing, but they didn't suffer from the slow mechanics of the game like D/P did
I loved gen 4 😍
Never played sinnoh
Sinner!!;!! Lord have mercy on his pooor taste
you played it when you were 1 how could you love it lol
This video is noooot for you
@「 HoennKid202Wally 」 lmao
I don't care what anyone says, the scene in Platinum where Giratina rises as a shadow on Spear Pillar is the most badass scene in Pokemon.
Yeah but she completely ignored Platinum
28:38 to 30:07 Talking about how Platinum patched up and improved on Diamond and Pearl is completely ignoring it?
You obviously haven’t played the Unova games then.
Its Ya Boi, Guzma No, I have, I just think the Giratina scene is better than those. That's not saying I didn't love those moments in Unova though.
It’s probably just me but, 9 year old me thought that Giratina looked kinda derpy when I first played the game.. I don’t know why but I thought it was funny when Giratina took Cyrus
Listen.
I love ALL the main Pokemon games. From 1 to 7 gen.
If anyone's got a problem with that, then smell ya later.
Well said!
Zion's World your the hero we need but don't want
gen 5 is the only gen that sucks major ass
Miss Kobe Yoshi Wrong. Best games.
Nope end game was stupid and no other titles to interact with outside the ds console
I found the ds era to be the best (despite being the era I played about mid way out of the pokemon games) as my faviroute pokemon games are platinum, heart gold and soul silver and both gen 5 games ( black and white and black2 and white2)
Yeah, the mid-late DS era of Pokémon games was the series prime, even the spinoffs like Mystery Dungeon Time/Darkness/Sky and the Rangers games.
There's so much care and content put into each succeeding mainline title. What followed with the underwhelming DP were robust experiences that utilized the DS hardware greatly, although not at its best.
Tamashii put it best when she said single player content took a backseat as online play and connectivity became more prevalent. The later DS titles, especially the Gen 5 games had the best of both worlds, offering side content like Underground Tunneling, Join Avenue and Battle Subway - and later Pokémon World Tournament - that can be played alone or with other people, as well as normal online play.
Nowadays, online features like PSS and Secret Bases in ORAS arguably beatout aspects of multiplayer before with how accessible they are, but I feel the overall singleplayer experience stumbled.
AeroFlash15 Sun/Moon improved the single player experience with the story/relatable characters.
The DS era, has some of my favorite Pokémon games of all time. And just to list the highlights:
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team
Platinum
HeartGold/SoulSilver
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky
Black/White
Black 2/White 2
They really did an incredibly amazing job, as gen 4 is my favorite generation of Pokémon, followed up by 5, Mystery Dungeon Explorers being my favorite game of all time, Black and White having my favorite story in the main series games (yes, including Sun and Moon), and of course, HeartGold and SoulSilver as well Black and White 2 being some of the biggest main series Pokémon games to date.
+Gera WallStar Gen 5 had a good story and characters too, as well as sizeable side content. Sun and Moon, while excellent with the characters and Pokémon, felt barebones with little to do after completing the main story.
There was nothing really "improved" when both Black and White games and ORAS had reasonably good stories as well.
I agree the gen 4 and 5 games the best. My favorites. But she does still bring good points like everything was fixed in platinum from diamond and pearl.
It pisses me off how Johto get regularly dunked on for putting some of its new Pokémon in the post-game, while Sinnoh in DP did it far worse, not only putting so many of the new evolutions in the post-game but making some even completely unavailable like Tangrowth!
Having been an avid Pokemon fan since Generation 2, I find that I'm a bit of an oddity when it comes to fans of the series when I say that Generation 4 is my favorite generation. It means so much to me, and I have many, many fond memories with Sinnoh, especially. However, I agree with pretty much every point you brought up here. Whilst I may love these games, blind love is just as bad as blind hate, and we must be critical of the things we love as much as we cherish them.
If you read through the comments I wouldn't say you're an oddity :) Gen 4 is also my favorite and I've been playing since Yellow came out.
Review of this: Okay wow i don't remember the story being that tedious, jesus fuck.
VPT2 I love the games but I definitely remember it. I actually have a similar problem with gen 3.
Gen III got a very nice remake though, i hope the same for Gen IV.
Any recap of a story will be tedious if you list every single thing that happens in it like she did.
+BJGvideos yes but the difference is if i watcha recap of sun and moon its fun, if i do that for this.....not so much.
I can understand not liking Diamond and Pearl, but Platinum is a big improvement and deserves respect!
Yes, she said Platinum was better.
The Poke'Saurus agreed
As a person who started from gen 1. I really enjoyed diamond and never played plat. I never thought the third versions were that great enough for me to buy and play it again (crystal, emerald, platinum) but that's because I assume they're the same gave with a few improvements?
Mr Meh usually the third versions has different pokemon, dialogue, fixed glitches, sometimes edits to story, new features ect
I love this review,. I do have a soft spot for gen 4, as it was the generation I was introduced to Pokémon in, And even though I like diamond and pearl I can agree they aren’t as godly as 5 year old me thought they were. Thank you for this, even if you don’t do videos in this format after this I’ll still enjoy these videos and the next pieces of content you make.
I wish Gamefreak would watch this video so that, when they decide to make the Sinnoh remakes, they'll understand what is is they need to improve upon.
I really don't think they need her help. They're on a freaking roll right now.
Gamefreak had already improved ALOT during these 12 years since Diamond and Pearl. There’s no need for you to say that.
@@burnout713 - Even so, feedback and listening to constructive criticism is still important. It's because of the lack of need to listen to feedback that games like the last two Paper Mario games are notoriously hated.
Besides, not everyone agrees that Game Freak are necessarily "on a freaking roll right now". Sure, they have improved on character design and the graphics end in the last 12+ years, but there are many in the Pokémon community who are finding issues with keeping up with the series now after gen V. Many argue on things like relying way too much on references to other regions (especially Kanto), the lack of more competitive aspects like the Battle Frontier, some of the actual Pokémon designs, the endless unskippable tutorials (despite the fact that the main gameplay essentially has stayed the same for 20 years) and cutscenes, and many more.
Fanboys and fangirls are those who follow something and ignore all of its flaws and defend them no matter what. Fans follow the same thing, but also acknowledge flaws and suggest on what could make them (even) better.
In my opinion, they Sun and Moon are by far the greatest games in the series and Diamond and Pearl are basically at the bottom other than X and Y. I love that the story is more of a focus and that there are cutscenes with extended dialog. I also love the references to Kanto, particularly the concept of the Alolan forms. And I think the newcomers are probably the best overall collection of Pokemon since the original batch. I've been interested in a Switch since its release, but this will be the year I actually get one because a real Pokemon game is finally on the way.
Basically, I disagree with the notion that looking back on a 13-year-old game that was one of their worst is in any way a good suggestion.
@@incomments2864 i think they need it now lmao
Im hoping that GF wont fuck it up with the remakes considering how rushed swsh is...
I think you should blame their need to base the game off of the Kyushu region as closely as possible for the reason they're threw things at you to slow you down too. Kyushu is a northern region with large mountains, wetland marshes, flowers, and snow. A lot of the buildings and structures are made of concrete or bricks because they would crack and erode under the harsh snow. Kyushu also has notoriously thick fog.
You hit the nail on the head with how the different generations (of players) experienced D&P differently, Tamashii.
I grew up with the original games, and have played each gen as they came out, and I was very much "meh" about D&P at the time. Granted, there's a lot that goes into that. Not only due to expectations built up from improvements in each previous games, but also due to my age at the time. By that point I was 1̶6̶ (scratch that, I was actually 18; god I feel old...), old enough to where I'd started to develop a certain nostalgia for the younger years of my childhood and the first gen of Pokémon; plus, having played video games for over a decade by then I'd started to get jaded about smaller things in games, like most gamers do after enough time. That combined with the general snark of a teenage mind, and everything about D&P just seemed like it didn't live up to what I was expecting it to be.
Compare that to somebody who played it as their first or second Pokémon, maybe even their first game ever, OF COURSE they are gonna love it. Anybody's first Pokémon experience is gonna be awesome and memorable, because Pokémon at its core is a great concept, especially when you don't have any other Pokémon game to compare to yet. But all of us will always be coloured by when we played these games, and which of them where our first one.
I don't know that she did hit the nail on the head, really. Maybe the people that are super harshly defensive of their D&P love started with them, but I'm not entirely convinced that it's a majority. Fair warning, this post ended up WAY longer than I wanted it to be because I'm too passionate about this gen, lol.
I grew up with the original games as well, and played each gen. I remember waiting excitedly for the release of R&S for the first ever full color pokemon games, really wanting Sapphire version - of course I ended up with Ruby, but hey, I got over it. Hell, I remember waiting excitedly for G&S, and rumors from all the other little 7 year olds like me at the time about the mysterious new pokemon 'pikablue'. Aka, Marill, of course. My favorite game, for the /longest/ time, was silver - I clocked in 500 hours of gameplay on it... the first time. Until I started glitch cloning things and such, and my file was corrupted. Played another 300 hours after that. I remember every little nook and cranny of the game by heart. I have no idea how I had that kind of attention span.
Fast forward into the DS era, and D&P were released.. To 14 year old me, they were somehow so.. mystical. Get ready for a long paragraph of stuff you already know, cus it all just excited me so much;
The idea of the lake guardians and how they interacted with the player (aka the vague lore of them being guardians and such, involved in the plot as a whole, etc) reminded me of what I wished celebi would have been. There was chatot, that I could speak to, and use whatever I said as an attack with! A flower pokemon, cherrim, that bloomed in the sun! Honey you could spread on trees to attract new pokemon. A cute penguin starter that became water and /steel/ type. Pokemon with different colors depending on their gender! Lots of interactable interesting pokemon in the world that WEREN'T legendaries like rotom and spiritomb, /new eeveelutions/ after a whole generation of nothing - don't even get me started on how much I loved the canalave library. The whole darkrai/cresselia dynamic was great to me, there were evolutions to pokemon from the first generation that never felt powerful enough (magmar, electabuzz, etc)... there were cool poketch features to collect /during/ gameplay for the bottom screen (even though you never used them), I could customize my pokeballs personally however I wanted, ribbon collecting became a /must/... Hell, I even loved the underground, and WISH they would've remade it on 3ds JUST to do that with full online capability or streetpass capability. And they made a pokemon GOD, which I've been DYING for them to actually use in a game for real, and a remake would be a fantastic time for it.
Just, I could go on and on. There were so many features that I didn't think about before, that I didn't even know I wanted, that were in these games. With all that said, D&P still didn't beat out Silver, to me... but then Platinum came around. And ooooh boy, do I love platinum. ESPECIALLY giratina's dimension. Platinum felt a bit better, fixed some things, added a bit - and that's my all time favorite game, and has been ever since. I'll admit it's a really, really slow gen, and didn't do some things fantastically - and I see its faults, and understand why most people /don't/ love it... but that's why I want it remade.
I mean, I personally started with Yellow version and yet DP is still my favorite gen
I started with Yellow aswell and I haven't completed any game after Gen 3, yet I have bought every new game when they came out. DP I played till 4th gym, Black 5th, X around 5 aswell and latest, Sun, I played only for 30 minutes just to realize that I don't really care about them. Yet I replay Fire Red every now and then. Soul Silver is great tho and in my opinion the best.
I've been playing for 18 years, and started with Red/Yellow. 4th and 5th gen are my favorites, so I kindly disagree. Excluding Mega-Evolution, I love most of the changes and additions to the series.
I'm about the same age as you (started with Yellow) and I thoroughly enjoyed Diamond/Pearl, though Platinum was definitely better. The changes they added, like the physical/special split and WiFi battling were amazing, and I was able to fully appreciate them since I was older and could see how far the franchise had grown. I did think the regional dex for D/P was pretty bad, but they fixed it in Platinum.
I need more videos yo 😭, I miss your videos so much!

Is it seriously fucking retro now? Seems like yesterday I was screaming at my chimchar to not be useless
I agree about the huge inconsistency between the Galactic Grunts' actions and their bosses' actions. The weird thing is, I feel like this is actually INTENTIONAL. The Grunts, even in-universe, constantly talk about how they have no idea what their bosses are planning. It's meant to be played for comedy, but it feels to me like "lampshading something bad about your plot doesn't make it any better" territory. THIS is why Team Galactic is my least favourite evil team in the series.
At least their music is good though.
On Cyrus, a lot of people like him because of this vague implied backstory you get on him talking to an old man in Canalave City who's implied to be his grandfather. The issue with this is YOU ONLY SEE IT AFTER HIS PLOT IS OVER. They do a whole plotline with a 2-dimensional cartoon villain and then right after it ends suddenly say "oh by the way he actually has a backstory." It could've even gone some way to justifying why he acts the way he does, if it wasn't given after he's ceased to be relevant.
Yep, that's it in a nutshell. You'd think for a game that uses the evil team more heavily than ever before for the story, they'd actually make sure that Evil team is good to begin with.
I love Ghetsis. He's EASILY my favourite villain in the series. I know he's a bit one-dimensional, but I love how he just revels in how evil and sadistic he is and doesn't even try to hide it once his true colours come out, and how "surprisingly dark for a Pokemon game" a lot of his character was, with the game not really sidestepping the issue that he's an abusive father.
Honestly, I think Tamashii brought up the exact reason why I feel Ghetsis did his role so much better than Cyrus. He tried the political approach in B/W, and when that failed, he threw subtlety out the window and went whole hog with his actions, even going so far as to attempt to MURDER THE PROTAGONIST! Not to mention all the crap he put N through.
Okay, misconception clearup: Ghetsis technically didn't try to murder the protagonist. This was just people who couldn't speak Japanese taking Japanese screenshots out-of-context. In all versions, he just tries to freeze them. A lot of people assume it was censored in the English translation, but it wasn't. The dialogue is practically identical in both versions. Something about "you will be frozen her so you can watch Unova fall to me" or something. Though it's entirely possible the freezing would've resulted in eventual death.
Either way, Ghetsis winds up killing a kid to conquer the world. That's still pretty fucked up.
I never really realized that diamond/pearl are that different from platinum because I played platinum as my first game and didn’t really play diamond or pearl because I thought they were the same thing all I knew that was different was that looker and that scientist guy weren’t in diamond and pearl.
I am now informed.
I. AM. SOLD!
The way that this video is constructed and presented is amazing. As an educator, the amount of research that was put into this is fantastic to see. Just the first three minutes alone, of going into the social influences of the time that effected and pushed the game, was enough to get me. It's small details like that that separate the good from the great. What's more, the inclusion of explanations when talking about narrative plot just shows how thorough and thoughtful she is, as this allows all audiences to be pushed up to the same level to help follow along with her progression.
Bloody well done, and I'm kicking myself for not discovering this sooner.
Ion McAdam yeah too bad she’s stopped making videos.
That's actually very disappointing. She has so much talent and her style is vastly different from everyone else's on the platform.
Hopefully she's doing something that she is passionate about. No matter what that is though, if she puts the same level of time, care, and effort into her present/future plans as she did with her previous projects then it has to be of high quality.
Besides, nothing is set is stone and like many comeback movies maybe she will return someday and be better than ever.
Ion McAdam she is fairly active on her Twitter, and it appears that she is working on another video.
She’s been fairly active lately, her ruby and sapphire review was really good and while I didn’t like the gold and silver as much I still loved it.
Yay your back I miss you

Warm Lillie Yeah she's my fave happy she's back!😀

I started with D&P and when I revisit it, it's SO slow. I remember loving the game, but I simply can't go back.
One of many, many reasons why these games need to be remade. The originals are just no longer good enough.
I still can't believe they removed the battle tower from ORAS
LinkinMark1994 and replaced it with a trolling fake statue.
LOL "tiny, dirty, brown town full of brown and dirt." This is an epic review. It's so detailed, analytical, and funny.
Changing the speed at which a video plays is probably one of the best features RUclips has introduced. It is used very well here. Good work on that bit of course.
I recommend 0.75 Speed. It sounds better than Half Speed.
it sounds like people are wasted drunk at 0.75 speed.
*flashbacks to the drinking game video
The high pitch still gave me a headache though.
+William Tamashii did a drinking game video?
Fun fact:
In 2016, I marathoned the entire Pokémon series in honor of the anniversary. I was having a wonderful time until I got to diamond and pearl. They were chores to play that I almost didn't finish. I remember level grinding for 10 hours before the elite4 only to STILL be under leveled
Yeah people seem to not remember how grindy D&P actually are, you can do it at a low level with the right pokemon but that's if you planned it all out from the start.
Were you doing EVERY pokemon game, or just one per gen? If it's the latter, you always wanna just play platinum, it fixes a lot of DP's problems.
I played the initial version for each generation that was the rule of my marathon. I played Red, Gold, Ruby, Diamond, Black, X, and Sun versions
Why would you do that? You specifically chose to play the inferior versions of most of these games. Yellow, Emerald, and Platinum (and presumably Crystal) are way better than the original versions. You kinda set yourself up for disappointment there.
Grinding for 10 hours? I think I have to replay them just to prove that you and other people claiming this just suck a) at fighting or b) choosing the right (or amount of) Pokemon.
This seems like an IHE video
That foreshadowing about the riding Pokémon feature is scary accurate with the new Pokémon scarlet and violet revolving around a Main riding Pokémon
Really enjoyed this! Can see A LOT of effort, thought and preperation went into it! Hope there could possibly be more coming!
You used your Master Ball on Dialga?! It has a Catch Rate of 45! You can get it in one Poké Ball consistently, and almost guarantee it with a Dusk Ball at night~! ;D Also, Cyrus giving you the Master Ball is just another thing about him and the story that makes no sense... He's like, "I already own exactly what I need to enslave Time / Space WITHOUT FAIL, but instead of using it, I think I can capture the related Like Trio and torture them until I can make some Red Chain and trying using that instead... I'll give the Master Ball to the first Trainer to try to stop me because I love conflict even though I hate strife."
Catching a legendary Pokémon making it less powerful is a common, unspoken theme. I don't know why it works that way, and no one ever states it in game. But every bad guy chooses to enslave the legend rather than catch it. And when you catch Dialga you don't become the master of time. It's weird.
Used to watch your glitch videos 5 years ago, forgot I subbed to you. I was pleasantly surprised
> 8 minutes of positive in a 52 minute video
Is this the Angry Joe Show?
Lol
When was Angry Joe angry?
I think this may have been intentional but the description of the plot line did not need to be fast forwarded. I can’t comprehend anything you’re saying during that sequence and I was interested in hearing your description of the game’s plot
.75 speed my friend
Adding choppy gaps to the voice over by lowering the speed of the video does literally nothing to improve the narration.
I found the speed up to annoying as well and it turned, what couls have been a valuable part of the video into an indecernable mess that I wanted to skip, wich I think is the opposite of what she wanted to achieve.
Excellent video. Very well made and well thought out. Everyone has their opinions, and you put a lot of effort into defending your's here. And that sped up walkthrough with the timeline was amazing!
Man, I just played Platinum for the first time the other day, my first gen 4 game. I feel like you had a lot of the points dead-on. The thing about Ponyta being fairly weak and one of the only fire-types did give me a great story: I caught one very early on bc I'd always wanted to use one. Leveling "Stomper" up was hard. He was nearly useless in caves or anywhere with water. Finally he learned Fire Blast (not the best for a physical attacker) and we get to the steel-type gym. He fights the first trainer and does okay, but as soon as the battle was over, he evolved into Rapidash! I was straight-up cheering. It was like that episode of the anime where the Ponyta evolves during the race bc it's so determined to win for its trainer. Stomper soloed the rest of the gym until the leader, where he fainted. He would've learned Flare Blitz sooner if I hadn't evolved him, but it was so epic. We worked so hard, and eventually made it to the Champion.
I agree with you. I played Diamond when I was a kid and growing up I remembered staying away from diamond and pearl because I remembered how dreadfully slow they were.
Crazy to think Diamond and Pearl counts as retro now.
I love when people crap on these games, not only because they're freakin' bad, but because they have no excuse to be. Yeah, gen I and II were literally their first and second tries, what's Diamond and Pearl excuse?
Oh, and sorry for leaving more than one comment, but I have an actual question in mind:
I too also worry about how Pokemon games have been neglecting the main story and single-player mode, because of the popularity of multi-player mode.... and I wonder if this will ever change. Do you think they'll ever start caring about the main stuff and single player mode again? Do you think they'll go back to putting as much effort into it as before? Because I just... really miss pokemon, ya know? That might sound like an overly dramatic thing to say, when I still do get enjoyment out of the games, but there really is a lot missing from the experience. I'm even probably going to skip Ultra Sun and Moon and just wait for the next games instead. Oh, and the removal of the Emerald Battle Frontier in ORAS really killed a lot of trust and respect for Gamefeak, for real. (This was mainly for Tamashi, but I'd love it if anyone wants to discuss this!)
I'm not sure tbh. I think it's just them following what a majority of players now want. They want to make games that most of the current players and new younger players will enjoy. For that to change something about the way kids see media would have to change I think.
TamashiiHiroka That's a good point. Maybe if I feel this way, lots of other fans must be feeling the same way too. And if not, I guess I shouldn't act like gamefreaks choices should revolve around me, haha~ Though naturally I kinda /expect/ this to be a widespread experience, so maybe one day they'll have to acknowledge it and make changes accordingly. As you said, we'll just have to wait and see! (Also I just realized how silly it sounded to apologize for leaving comments... since that's usually what youtubers want, lol oops! I need to stop deleting things and feeling bad for having opinions.)
After 3 years, I finally watched the video. Reason I stayed away from it was because it was so long! But this is one of the best videos ever made
I'm barely an adult, and it feels weird hearing Diamond and Pearl called Retro Games. But I guess it has been 11 years now. I remember playing them when I first got my DS.Didn't have nearly as many memories with them as I did Crystal and Firered beforehand, but the music and new features really pulled me in at first, even if I consider them some of my least favorites in the series to this point.
I get why people love Diamond and Pearl, but the first two dragged for me a bit, especially after the 3rd gym(when you go so long w/o a badge). Platinum on the other hand gave me a much better time, and did a bit to alleviate the slowness of the game's general pace, but that doesn't mean it didn't drag at all.
actually it's been 10 years xD
Nope, he's right PashedMotatoes. it's been 11.
PashedMotatoes The games initially came out on September 28, 2006. As of this comment they're approximately 11 years and two days. SOO close to the 11 year date exactly...
Absolutely top video. Everything you stated is everything I've complained about to friends in person for years and years. I'm glad I'm not the only one(and I mean, I could've never been the _only_ one) that views these games the way I do. They were rushed by release date constraints and you could tell they were sloppily put together to make a deadline. Luckily, though, they used the experience and hardships of making these games and produced some of their best games to date in the following releases.
Another great video!! You were able to really lay out a lot of problems that take time to describe (the graph with all the fights and badges on was really illustrative) and summed up a lot of my own personal feelings about the design of the region. I was so pleased it was as long as it was haha, definitely worth waiting for.
Brilliant diamond and shining Pearl are a mistake.
I wonder how you ended up feeling about Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, since it takes more from the original two than Platinum for some odd reason
Pokemon: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Elite Four Version
you’re points are super interesting and valid. i definitely felt like the “story” of d/p felt like excuses to grind. platinum is good and fixes a lot, my favorite being the faster game speed and more pokemon.only question i have for you is why include a bunch of dumb or thoughout viewer comments with nonblurred names? not really a criticism, i just wanna know your reasoning
"Only two fire type pokemon" We all know who you were thinking of when you said that.
Diamond and Pearl were my first games, but even I grew frustrated when I played it, the story was so vague I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing between my 7th and 8th badge, and put it down for months until my friend helped me get through it. I also liked some of the concepts even though the execution can be considered weak ,like the ideas behind the legendaries conceptually are really interesting but they don't make alot of sense existing in the same region and you can tell they just jammed them in one game.
"because I was a loser who didn't have any friends" we have all been there. Lool.
First time viewer! This is stellar. Great analysis, you're well-spoken, and you understand the art of criticizing what you love in hope that it can improve. Time to binge your past videos haha.
Quick tip: Please do not waste the Master Ball on Dialga/Palkia! Their catch rate in that battle is really high, I caught mine easily with a Pokeball.
do yourself a favor and save it for heatran .
