    @1:42 I had NEVER been able to hear that synth countermelody through my GBA speakers or earbuds before. Thanks for enhancing a 22-year-old memory!

      haha. We'll see! They still take time to produce, and tracks from The Lost Age might take a bit longer (I'm still trying to figure out how to do the drums properly. The second game uses different samples for drums. Some people have been trying to identify them for years). Watch this space! :)

    I especially love the emphasis of the drum set in this mix. If Ninendo ever make an "HD version" of this game, or a remake with 3D graphics, I can only hope that the music will sound as amazing as this and your other restoration projects! Man, I would _really_ love to see Golden Sun and its sequel get the Link's Awakening treatment. If possible, however, an even better solution would be to combine both games into a single massive game!

    • @JusteDni
      @JusteDni  Год назад +2

      Thanks a lot! Oh yeah it'd be a dream if Nintendo makes a Golden Sun 1/2 remake. And if they hire Motoi Sakuraba to arrange the soundtrack, that would be so perfect!

    Sakuraba MUST have been using a truckload of Roland rompler gear, and even to this day.
    Recommend also checking out niltwill's Fighting the Shadowy Gods.
    Well done on this!

    • @JusteDni
      @JusteDni  Год назад +3

      Thanks! Yeah Sakuraba has an impressive collection of synths and modules. Some people have managed to gather a list of some of his hardware (it's somewhere on reddit). The difficult part is to pinpoint exactly "which" modules" he used on "which" games. I was able to get started with the SC-88 and the JV-1080 thanks to the VGM Instrument Sources google doc. But for instance, to this day there's still no data available regarding GS3 Dark Dawn, I have no idea where the samples come from! And on recent games he must be using loads of different modules for sure!
      Oh and I've checked that channel you mentioned, this is quite awesome!

      @@JusteDni Sakuraba definitely has an amazing rack, which is a weird thing to say kinda.
      Confronted with the limitations of the GBA I 100% believe he'd go to something like the Sound Canvas for sampling. It feels very accurate other than the bassline but that might just be a settings thing... hard to put my finger on. But when you know your samples are going to get bitcrushed into a few hundred kilobytes what else would you do?
      Either way, subbed and looking forward to your next.
      Matthew Valente (aka TSSF) has been doing accurate reconstructions from hardware source. Worth checking out.

      @JusteDni  Год назад +3

      @@gaspump hahaha. Thanks! Yeah I was discussing that bass with someone else on a different video (the GS1 Boss Battle). I can confirm that it's the correct Bass sample from the SC-88 (it's been confirmed on multiple forums that all the samples from GS1 come from that Sound Canvas module, with spectrogram comparisons and everything), but the "full patch" is very different from the game where it's just one sample. In my videos I need sometimes to make decisions. For some instruments it's very easy, the "Bass ff" and "ChoirAahs" for instance are too different in their full-patch version with the game version so I stick to single-patch. But for the Bass, I really like the full-patch, but it's absolutely true that it lacks that gritty feel that the game has. I feel like I'm getting better at this in recent videos so I'll probably re-upload my old tracks with some updates!
      And I love what Mathew Valente does, he's incredibly talented! Such a huge inspiration!! And you're right, his restored versions are very, very accurate. But he's been doing it for years! I'm barely starting! :)

      @@JusteDni Yeah I started listening back to back but emulation adds another layer of crust despite the best of intentions. The bass just sounds a bit more... hall effect, maybe. I listened at Zophar's built-in plugin and again in WinAMP via Highly Advanced. Mostly I just learned how great this version sounds!
      TSSF inspired me to learn Fasttracker2 back in the day. There was a point where I was using ancient 90s ZSNES to dump the SPC700 ram then using FT2's tools to chop it up. Good times. Wish that HDD didn't get fried.
      Thanks again for the great tunes!

    I love this, and also the recorded from hardware version. This version is obviously much cleaner and better separated, and maybe it's that the bass on the GBA version is...blown out?

    My memory had imagined some of the notes bending for emphasis. I guess in a tracker format, that probably wasn't technically possible until the recent MIDI 2.0.

    • @JusteDni
      @JusteDni  Год назад +2

      The GBA audio engine was definitely capable of doing pitch bends! You'll find them in a lot of Golden Sun songs, but most of the time, just on one or two tracks, and at specific moments. And here in Isaac Battle there are some pitch bends on the synths at 1:04!

    I think this track suffers a bit from the Metroid Fusion problem, where the song relies on the GBA's fuzzy static to 'fill out' the song. There's just something missing with this version
