This video made more sense than 6 chapters in my chemistry book. I literally went month's without understanding how to multiply and divide scientific notation. THANK YOU.
I have been teaching 8th grade math for 5 years now and your videos are by far the best resource I've seen for breaking down what scientific notation is, how to write numbers in scientific notation, and how to connect knowledge of exponent laws to perform operations with scientific notation. Keep the videos coming!
I am an old person and trying to help my grandchild with schoolwork. Math was never my best or anywhere near best subject. We have watched multiple videos how to do this and there always seemed to be a hidden question that wasn't answered and we would get more confused. Your video broke this down to an absolutely easily understood concept. We now know how to do the exponents including the negative ones the correct way and WHY the exponents were added or subtracted instead of multiplied or divided, Thank you so much, We subscribed. We will definitely be looking at your videos first, THANK YOU.
@rafaeldelaflor i think the video you want is called "scientific notation and significant figures (1.7)" the video called "scientific notation and significant zeros (1.8)" may also be helpful. if those videos don't help you, send me a message with some examples of the type of problems that you would like me to explain.
@RedWOLF4Life96 if you're multiplying, you always ADD the exponents on 10. if you're dividing, you always SUBTRACT the exponents. it doesn't matter if the exponents are negative or positive: you know how to add or subtract negative numbers, right?
i have a lot of videos on scientific notation with negative exponents. i talk about them in this video. but you probably want to start with my video called "scientific notation introduction," and then you can watch "scientific notation practice problems," and then "fixing incorrect scientific notation."
when you multiplied 2.12 by 3.58 what did you do to get 7.59 ? im asking because when i multiplied my answer i got was 7.5896 so i was wondering, did you do some rounding off some where ? thanks
He said he rounded them to the first three numbers. So he rounded 9 and then rounded 8, which got him 7.59 (i know its been 7 years since you made this comment but just putting it out there for other people to know)
when ur 3rd digit like in 7.5896 , then 8 is rounded up to 9 cuz it was greater than 5 . If it was 3 or 4 or something , it wouldve been 7 only i think , Kick me if im wrong and also feels good to answer a 8 year old question
I appreciate all of the videos I've watched of your lessons, so far. Reading how to do this kind of thing in a Chemistry textbook is difficult for me. I learn much better by observing, step by step, how each problem should be solved. Thank you! You are a blessing for Chemistry students, such as myself!
@CKYAlliance32 do it from left to right. first do the multiplication, then take the answer to that and do the division. since the mantissas are 8.2, 9, and 2, your final answer should have only one significant figure. does that make sense?
I think you meant 3.05 x10^6. You forgot to round the significant figure. 9.72/3.19=3.047. and there is 3 significant figures so we stop at 4 but change the 4 to 5 because 7 is a high number.
Thank you very much! You help me survive my online class on General Chemistry, it's my fault because I slept during the class and turned off the camera, THANKS A LOT!
Very thankful, I'm just now learning how to do this in science class. I was stumped on my homework, I watched this video and now I understand it way better. Thanks again.
Hey everyone, I'm here to help. If you have any questions or just want to learn more, click on the link in the description above. It'll take you to a page where you can ask me questions.
Our RUclips educators like this guy should get paid for making these simple videos, they know how to simplify our math stuff than our teachers do in most math classes these days.
Hey Tyler, this last division problem has me confused. You said when we move the decimal to the left the exponent goes down. so shouldn't the right S N answer be 2.67x10 to negative 2?
When you move it to the right, the power of 10 becomes smaller, it means you move one digit away from the decimal. That is also the same as -2-1=-4 based from the rules of integers. That's why the power of 10 became -4. I hope that helped.
Thanks for being so motivated. I wish you would make a focus video on rounding the resulting figures with scientific notation. From scientific notation to scientific notation and from figures to scientific notation with rounding.
Thank you so much! You just taught me in 5 minutes what I spent years not understanding from any of my professors! And scrolling through your other videos, I can tell that I'm going to be using your channel quite a bit as I do my Chemistry homework this semester.
I honestly can't believe i learnt that in 5 mins where in my class i had to legit take 1 hour to "learn" but actually not learning how to do it, PLEASE BE MY TEACHER!
thanks so much for all your videos, my instructor is sooooo bad at explaining things...well, she doesn't really explain, she just murmurs to herself in the front...wish every teacher is like you ! !
they "taught" us this in highschool, either they didn't make it interesting like you did, or I wasn't paying attention but I find this relaxing and fun to do when i felt so much pressure in school
THANK YOU!!! You are a math master, praise your brilliant mind! Thanks for taking time out of your life to thoroughly explain so many complex math processes!
You are AMAZING. I have never understood math fully until watching your videos. Thank YOU !! Keep this up. You are a genius !!!!!! Even though this is from 2010
In what case would you do what you do in adding and subtracting scientific notations which is moving the decimal to make the exponent greater. In what case you do that with multiplying and dividing.
i am bit confused at the end of the multiplication video . ...you have increased the power from -3 to -4 .........I am not sure but shouldn't the power decrease from -3 to -2 because you have moved to right..I don't know i am just confused at this part. Thank you very very much for all of your videos. I really appreciate it.They are really helpful:)
Here's why you're confused. The exponents are negative, which means that 10^-4 is *smaller* than 10^-3. When exponents are negative, the bigger the negative exponent, the smaller the number.
thanks this is a big help to me because i had a examination on this on thursday i was on my 3rd year of high school and i was little bit confuse regarding this topic
Wow thank you SOOOOOO much!!!!! I needed help with this and this has proved to be very useful and simple than I thought :D Now I get it and can explain it to my friend or send her the link :D THANK THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you!! Sigfig Q: I thought that they were based on the measurements in the problem. But...I notice that the # of sigfigs morphs as that kind of problem evolves; i.e., the result of an intermediate mult/div step might yield 2 sigfigs when the measurements themselves had more than 2. In multistep problems (add/mult/square/sci notn all in one), I have a hard time figuring out which measurements throughout the problem get to have the 'final say' on sigfigs at the very end. Help? Thanks!
I'm a little bit confused and wondered if you could help... when it comes to changing the power when you're trying to get both of the powers to match, how do you know which power to change? I tried changing the other side to you on one of your examples but it gave a completely different answer. Thanks for your help :-)
It doesn't matter which power to change, so if it didn't work when you did it, maybe it would help to do a little review. Check out my videos Scientific Notation: Introduction and Fixing Incorrect Scientific Notation. Good luck!
Tyler DeWitt Thanks Tyler. I just tried it again and it worked out fine this time. I'll have a look over the other video's just as a refresher. Thanks again.
This video made more sense than 6 chapters in my chemistry book. I literally went month's without understanding how to multiply and divide scientific notation. THANK YOU.

All the dislikes are from those Math teachers that suck at explaining things
True
And also that is all the teachers in the world
Same
Ya
Orion the Hunter I agree and one of those teachers is my teacher Mr. Herrera
I have been teaching 8th grade math for 5 years now and your videos are by far the best resource I've seen for breaking down what scientific notation is, how to write numbers in scientific notation, and how to connect knowledge of exponent laws to perform operations with scientific notation. Why isn't my math teacher this clear...?
+WastingFilm because you're chemistry teacher should be teaching you this
Good point. xD
+WastingFilm yeah I'm learning this in math and my teacher is so dumb compared to him
SPENCERDC this is chemistry for me
That is so true this is so in depth
Dang, my science teacher sucks. Wherever this dude is I hope him the best in his life, ima pass the quiz with this one

and it was posted literally 9 years ago.. this dude is a genius
-32×10^(-19)=???
How to multiply this ..
I know its answer is -3.2×10^(-18)
But howww...
Yupp
PLEASE CONTINUE MAKING VIDS LIKE THIS! You are literally saving me in chemistry. The teacher doesn’t explain ANYTHING!!!!
Same here
i have a lot of videos on scientific notation with negative exponents. i talk about them in this video. but you probably want to start with my video called "scientific notation introduction," and then you can watch "scientific notation practice problems," and then "fixing incorrect scientific notation."
I'm studying electronics and you just made things much easier for me. Thanks for taking the time to help others learn.
fire my teacher and replace her with that smart guy.
Imagine if your teacher saw this comment
THANK U SO MUCH MY CHEMISTRY TEACHER IS SO BAD AT EXPLAINING STUFF
heycarolina really?
Same
THATS WHY IM HERE TOO but.... It’s more like he wasn’t bad at explaining more like me being dumb.
Same here
same, I couldn’t understand my maths teacher
Why can't all the teachers in the world be like you?? Thank you so much!!😭 you saved my life!!!♡
You are literally a GOD of explaining things. Your abilities to make everything make sense is crazy.
No words to fully express how freaking amazing you are! 24 years without chemistry and thanks to you, I understand what I’m doing!!!!
Wow, this taught me more than a whole hour of class did. Thank you very much.
when you multiplied 2.12 by 3.58 what did you do to get 7.59 ? im asking because when i multiplied my answer i got was 7.5896 so i was wondering, did you do some rounding off some where ? thanks

Damn bro ive seen your vids before 😳
Yes he rounded up to have 2 decimal places
when ur 3rd digit like in 7.5896 , then 8 is rounded up to 9 cuz it was greater than 5 . If it was 3 or 4 or something , it wouldve been 7 only i think , Kick me if im wrong and also feels good to answer a 8 year old question
this makes SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much more sense than khanacademy! Thank you so much!
FR!
lol
THE STRUGGLE IS REAL
frfr bruh
Yeah! I know right???
You are a fantastic teacher my friend. Took a concept that completely baffled me and made it seem like a walk on the park.
this guy explained it better in a minute and twenty seconds better than my math teacher could in an entire block.
I appreciate all of the videos I've watched of your lessons, so far. Reading how to do this kind of thing in a Chemistry textbook is difficult for me. You teach a lot better than my actual chemistry teacher.. thanks for the help man
ok my answer was already given in the video , ignore the question about rounding
8 years later… still satisfied with your answer?
@@kylarpotter570 sthu lmao
@james FishmanYeet I need this guy to answer im too curious to stop now 🤷♂️
Hey everyone, I'm here to help. If you have any questions or just want to learn more, click on the link in the description above. It'll take you to a page where you can ask me questions.
You are so helpful, where my teacher is not. you saved me from failing a test! thank you so much!
4:11....what if there was 234 instead of 2.34.......what to do then....?....plz repaly....
This video taught me under an hour
on question #2 wouldn't it be 3.05? instead of 3.04 because there is three sig figs so it moves 3 decimal places?
This chanel is a life saver !
You explained that very well, and on top of that, I hope to get all of these types of problems on my test tomorrow. Thank You!
Hi. I'm a bit confused. When you divided 9.72 by 3.19, shouldn't the answer have been rounded to 3.05 instead of 3.04? Thank you.
Our RUclips educators like this guy should get paid for making these simple videos, they know how to simplify our math stuff than our teachers do in most math classes these days.
800K views = $10,000 - $20,000
This was great! thanks to you, I can get an A on my Chem test tomorrow!! finally a mathmatician I can UNDERSTAND!!
OMG! THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH!! LOOK FORWARD TO PASS MY MATH EXAM NOW, TOMORROW !!!!

@@shaiofthehighlands5792 the smaller the number, the bigger the negative number
exaple -3 if you want it smaller then its -4
I had the same problem too, suddenly I remembered about the bigger the negative number, the smaller the value.
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HOW GREATFUL I AM FOR YOU YOURE CHANGING THE WORLD MY GUYY
Thanks for being so motivated. I wish you would make a focus video on rounding the resulting figures with scientific notation. From scientific notation to scientific notation and from figures to scientific notation with rounding.
Watching this video is perhaps one of most important things I did for preparation for my exams.

Thank you so much! You just taught me in 5 minutes what I spent years not understanding from any of my professors! And scrolling through your other videos, I can tell that I'm going to be using your channel quite a bit as I do my Chemistry homework this semester.
Why couldn't my professor make it this easy?! Thanks you just saved me!! :)
thanks for the review, been about 7 years since i have had to do this. knocked some rust loose with this.
You just saved my job. this is a real blessing. thanks for being so thorough.
Forget about how much the video is old ...but the content present. ..its awesome ❤😊
why would 9.72/3.19 rounded to 3 sig fig be 3.04? Shouldn't it be 3.05 as the answer is 3.047 rounded to 3 sig fig? Please help.
Thank you! You made this so much easier than the way my professor was teaching it. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I honestly can't believe i learnt that in 5 mins where in my class i had to legit take 1 hour to "learn" but actually not learning how to do it, PLEASE BE MY TEACHER!
This is so sad that so many professors do not know how to break down Chemistry like this guy. Tyler DeWitt you ROCK!
Very good explanation. Better than Khan Academy's.
My math teacher is so confusing and this helped me so so so much. Thank you. This is a lot easier than I thought it was
You saved me, thanks man!!
My teacher just sped through it without explaining it much.
thanks soooo much! I have a chem test tomorrow and this totally helped me!
You just did in 5:30 minutes what my teacher couldn’t in 1:30 hours
Ur like a freaking miracle worker, This was SOOOOO helpful
I watched all of your scientific notation videos they were all really helpful im going to ace my test tomorrow
