How to record speedpainting videos without zooming/painning in photoshop using OBS [tutorial]

- In this video I explain the method I use to record time lapse videos without showing any zooming and panning with the recording program OBS.
if you don't have a second monitor, select Window Capture instead of Display Captute and choose the Photoshop window that you'll be recording. even if you place it somewhere not visible on your screen like below your original window workspace, OBS will still record it and it won't show anything else
it doesnt work for me it still needed to appear in screen to record the progress help
@@Telekho sure it works. You need to select the right Window and switch to your working Window. Sure that Window you are recording you Cant minimize. But its no problem with that
Thanks!
I tried it, doesn't work... the second I minimize it becomes static and only when I get back to it on my screen it appears on recording updating it, and placing it outside of my monitor makes it black on the recording. I use photoshop CS5 is this only for later photoshop versions?
If i minimize the window my drawings dont appear on the 2nd window
Niceeee. I was looking for this a long time. I didn’t record my painting because i don’t want to show other people my references window lol. Thanks for your useful video !!!
lol, same here. xD
Glad it was helpful ;)
I’ve just been using my phone for references xD
lol keep references hid deep ! glad you wrote it down here man
This solution is so simple that I'm sitting here mindblown that I never thought about it before??? God this'll make things so much easier from now on, thank you so much for posting this!!
Your photoshop ui being white makes it seem likes its a super old version lol but thanks for the tutorial. always wondered how people do this
Oh my goodness, this actually works in CSP too! Thank You so much, I've been looking for this solution for a while now :D
At first , I didnt work for me , it just only showed one Photoshop panels while I have two in Window Choosing to record , but after I updated the OBS , Window Capture can let me choose one of the .PDS that I want to record , to make timelapse , thank you so much for the video , this helped me alots
Genius! I have some old timelapses that i haven't shared because of this. Thank you! now I will sub you and try to find speedpainting tuts from you.
Great to hear. Thanks for the support!!
This is exactly what I needed. Trimming out those rapid zooms is tedious. Thank you.
I'm already doing this for quite a while, but was looking for a solution to the fact that the second window only updates whenever an action was completed. You'll never see actual brush strokes being made and that bothers me a lot, tbh. Does anyone have a solution for that?
Im afraid that there is no tech solution to that. What i do myself is to make shorter brush strokes instead, so in the recording you get a closer feel to a smooth use of strokes. You dont see the difference, take a look at some of my speedpainting videos to check on it.
@@MiguelIglesiasART Hello, great video! i was looking for such thing but i answer here cause i have the same issue than @Ferodra after testing. sad it moves that way on photoshop :/ maybe now it exists a solution for this? ty
@@yojimbe7804 nope
Wow, great finding this, man. I needed this for my art process videos. Thank you!
No problem, happy to hear it helps :)
Will you be uploading any of those art process videos m8?
Can I recommend you watch philosophy tubes videos? They're enlightening.
Thank you so much, you saved me lot of money, I was about top buy ipad to record my drawing process bcz it was not looking good on screen recording
Hey just a heads up, can you turn the bg music way down so we can hear you better 😁
This is perfect for dual monitor! Take your like, good sir.
Thank you! Quite an epic name you have ;) Love it :D
Omg thank you so so much for this! I had the problem you mentioned with the zooming in and out but now I know what to do for my next recordings!!!
When I go to "arrange" and add new window and begin working on the other opened file, the reference/second window disappears to my desktop. So, it doesn't stay in the Photoshop workspace-how can I keep it from disappearing?
Yes! I can't believe I only just found this after 8 years of digital painting 😅
Thank you, very helpful video! 🥰 Also, that's some stunning artwork! I just subscribed 😁
Awesome guy! Exactly what I was looking for!
Very clear instruction, thanks!
Thank you! Glad it was clear for you :)
absolutely fantastic. to the point. clear. I loved it!
Thank you for the helpful OBS tutorial! Exactly what I needed 😁
Thank you so much for this!! Can’t wait to try this!
Why cant PS add revord screen just like procreate? It's 100 times more expensive than procreate. This is absolutely crazy
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
exactly what i was looking for, thank you!
Thank you so much mate! It really helped a ton
really good thank you
How can you do this but show the strokes being drawn in realtime rather than appearing and disappearing?
but I want to show the strokes coming in not just pop! and it's there
Thank you. I'm using Paint Tool SAI and this method also works for it. I wish I knew this earlier
Thank you Exactly what I needed !
I do understand very well what your doing in the video, but may I ask how you speed the video up so it is a speedpaint?
Yes sure! I do speed up the original recorded video with the help of an editing program ;)
Can I do that without second monitor?
Very cool and informative
@miguelIglesiasArt do you know a way how to record your screen and be able to record one layer but not another so that you only record the finishing / clean work layer and not the sketchy line art layer underneath?
Sorry no idea :/
Is it possible to make the drawing in the other window in real-time as well?
Thank you so much!
Great vd ! ty so much, one question, what kbs do you use for your recordings?
Thank you so much! It is really helpfull *_* trying to recordmy paintings now. Will it work in SAI?
hey this is really helpful tutorial! thankyou so much man.. did you still active? i hope so.. i want ti see you getting bigger and bigger! cheers!!
Thanks a lolt! I am very glad to hear it helped. Yes I am, and preparing a lot of new content. Is just I dont have much time lately, but there is more to come for sure :)
awesome, exactly what i was wondering!
ay man thanks for the tutorial bro, but may i know why the 2nd window only record object i made instead of tracking every brush stroke? thanks
Great! now how do I crop my video to only show the artboard? I want to create an Instagram reel. My artboard size is 1080*1920 px (reel dimesnions). I would love to record/crop only this so that the reel shows as full screen on IG reels. Hope you see this and answer
You just need to customize the dimensions of the Display capture "source" you will use in OBS ;)
Having trouble. Shows everything but my drawing. It’s there in photoshop, but not displayed on obs. What’s happening?
Great video! Thank you for this
mine doesn't update in real time, only after I've finished the brushstroke. I have PS CC by the way
Its the same for me. That is how it works I am afraid :P
@@MiguelIglesiasART NP, Thanks tho. I used this method anyway and it looked fine sped up.
Thank you. Even though i use clip studio paint i found the same option in windows tab
I do have a quuestion, at around 1:50 you mention recording a specific area of the screen if you only have one screen to play with. How do I make that section the cropped final result? I did a recording and it has recorded that section i wanted (by adding a crop filter) and the rest is black screen around it. Can i have a result where it actually crops it rather than maintaining the original size minus area outside the desired window?
Hi Paul,
I am not sure if I get exactly what you mean...
If I understood correctly, I believe you can not crop it as you are asking (at least i dont know how). I think OBS will only record the aspect ratio of you whole monitor. The only thing you can do is to arrange the area on your monitor display that OBS will record. You can do that by dragging with the cursor the red area and pushing ctrl left button at the same time in your keyboard.
You can center it as if it would be in the center of the monitor, so even if you have black area around it, the result is the same as I do my self with a second monitor, since OBS will record under the aspect ratio of your display monitor.
Hope this helps :P
is there a way to do this is autodesk sketchbook on ipad?
No idea, sorry. This tutorial is just for photoshop
was really helpful, thks for making this video
thank you so much... i didn't think about it... love it!
A really big thanks to you!
Thanks!
The quality becomes bad as soon as I speed up the video .. help
Very helpfully Video
I only have a small 12 inch Lenovo ideapad tablet/laptop. I can't sacrifice the space just to record :(
Try to make it as big as you can comfortably, record only the canvas and then scale it up a little bit in your editing software. You will loose a little bit of quality, but it will help a bit until you can afford a monitor. If you get a second monitor, then you can make it as big as you want in the second screen and keep working in your main screen. Also, there are fairly cheap monitors in e-bay, facebook marketplace and craigslist, if you really want to invest in doing speedpaintings now.
Maybe there is also a software that records only the canvas, but I didn't found out yet.
Thank you for this!
I have a slight issue here. Ive only got one screen, and the second window cant be fullscreened on the background while I have my main photoshop window open. It just doesnt let me switch to my main window. Is there a way to send it to the background but still visible?
As in clicking or alt tabbing to my main photoshop window doesnt actually show me the main window but the copy, so I cant actually work on it
How do you get the new window to mirror the exact brush strokes? When I try nothing appears until after a stroke is completed, and the entire stroke appears instantaneously.
As far as i know, that is the way it goes. Havent find a way around that. But i found that is not a big issue, you just need to break the brush stroke more, and when speeding up the video recording you will barely notice a big difference. That is at least how i deal with it.
@@MiguelIglesiasART I guess it was the time lapse then. From the looks of it I had thought you were pulling it off. Thanks.
I have a specific problem, as always, I'm trying to do the same thing but the strokes on my second tab don't register until i take my pen off the screen when Im drawing is there any way I can fix this or is the problem personally with just my pc...
please make a full tutorial on whole settings for speedpaints in OBS!
Really need help!!
More portrait videos like this one? I love portraits 🙃
Yes sure. More will come at some point :)
Very useful thank you
good idea, thank you
Hey, Miguel!
Thank you for this! Also, I've been a fan for quite a while, so thank you for sharing your awesome work!
I've been getting into recording some of my work, too, and I'd like to ask you if you've ever played around with the fps for your recording and editing.
In what fps do you do your recording and editing? Especially for timelapsing, I've been wondering if it's that different to record and edit in 30 or 60 fps.
Do you have thoughts on that?
Hi! I dont think it makes a big difference when it comes to time lapse painting videos but I do record on 60fps nevertheless.
Cheers
I see. I have been recording in 60fps as well and this week I had decided to try out recording a little bit in 30fps to try to check if I see any significant difference both in smoothness and in quickness and weight on the machine while editing and rendering. I haven't gotten around to test it properly, tho, and I wanted to know the thoughts of someone with more experience on it, like yourself.
Thank you for taking the time to reply, @@MiguelIglesiasART!
I really appreciate your input!
Thank you again for your content and for sharing your work. It does inspire me a lot!
Cheers! 🙂
man i love it! thank you for that :D
Glad it helped ;)
so you have two monitors for your pc??
thats why it doesnt work on my laptop?
Thanks for sharing!!
THANK YOU SOO MUCH BRO
Is this method working on another software like krita or medibang, or any other? Thanks...
I have no idea. I am sorry :/
Amazing!
What program did you use to record?
I use procreate, would this work the same way?
No idea. I dont use procreate so I dont know how it works. But there should be something similar i guess.
what settings do you use on your photoshop resolution that your screen is so crisp?
300 resolution ;)
Can you tell me what width and height pixels u use?@@MiguelIglesiasART
My second window only record brush strokes after they are finished, it doesn't show the actual stroke being made, any solution for this?
Im afraid that there is no tech solution to that. What i do myself is to make shorter brush strokes instead, so in the recording you get a closer feel to a smooth use of strokes. You dont notice any difference really, take a look at some of my speedpainting videos to check how it looks.
@@MiguelIglesiasART Thanks
Hi, do I have to have a real second monitor or is it a display setting?
because on obs the second monitor does not appear after opening the second window on Photoshop
Hello there. Let see if I understood correctly...
You have a second monitor and you have drag the duplicate photoshop window to it. If the duplicate window is not showing on OBS it is probably because you havent selected the second monitor as display for OBS. To fix that what you need to do is to select that monitor as display on OBS as I show on the video ;)
Hope this helps ;)
@@MiguelIglesiasART thank you for the answer. Anyway I don't have a second monitor 😂 In summary, I wanted to ask you if I could use this technique whitout a second monitor,
@@g.templorini Oh ok my bad.
Yes you can, but then you would have to split screen space from your main monitor to accommodate the second window and select that area to record with OBS. I show how to do that too on the video ;)
Minute 1:49 ;)
@@MiguelIglesiasART Hey, even with splitting the screen and then adding a new source of display capture it's not showing the second screen in the set up. why?
ok but I can't even get obs to capture my canvas/ photoshop document
My guess is that you should select the proper display from which to record in OBS. Maybe you are selecting a wrong display.
I rotate my canvas a lot and it shows on the other screen too :S When I speed the video up viewers will get dizzy
So, I tried this (with SAI not Photoshop) and the only thing that it recorded was my cursor over a blank artwork? Like, I watched through the recording and at the end the screen is just covered in cursors but no artwork??? Please help.
thank you so much
The bad thing is that this only works well if you have a big screen x_x here with my old lap of 12'' (I think) I'm gonna get blind if I reduce more the window space. I had to put an advertence of dizziness in my last speedpaint for the problem of zooming and panning XD
And well, I don't dream with a 2nd monitor for now
How do you change values with your color painting with out clicking on them? I always have the color bar Out to change color values
I am not sure I understand your question. Can you elaborate?
is there a way out for the ones who has only 1 monitor?
can this be done in paint tool sai
Up
what do you use to speed up a video?
Adobe premier ;)
@@MiguelIglesiasART thankss
Is it the same with cc 2018
what program are you using
What if I dont have a 2nd monitor? ;(
thank u
thank you!!
Ohh please man ... could you share your cube brush it would help me out so much to achieve the look i want .. please !
you won't achieve the look you want unless you understand the process of making that brush. If you really don't want to create your own photoshop has a plenty good of brush options created by Kyle T. Webster go check it out
@@catardeleanu8611 What do you mean?
I never understood how people make such great brushes and I never found a proper guide on how to do it.
I can't find a way to learn that and this is absolutelly key to master Digital painting.
I always get the beginning right but when it comes to get teh final look I always have to give up cause the brushes i have are garbage and when you download some packs you get 200+ brushes and you never get a one that matchs what you have in mind.
@@PhO3NiX96 there are quite a few on RUclips. Otherwise, check out SVSlearn.com they do wonderful tutorials for illustrators. In one of them the teach how to make your own brushes.
✌️
@@catardeleanu8611 I don't use illustrator at all tho
@@PhO3NiX96 I said for "illustrators" as in people who illustrate.
THanks!!!
I have a problem, when I zoom in the first panel, the second panel zoom too. is there a way to stop it?
Go to the zoom tool, then uncheck "zoom in all Windows" in the top bar
can we use it in paint tool sai??
thank you very much! Haha
You are welcome :P
How can this be done on a tablet with autodesk sketchbook?
im afraid i have no idea. This tutorial is for photoshop running on a PC. Sorry i cant help.
thankkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk uuuuuuuuuuuu :)
Oh no.... Information I want but with the FORBIDDEN SONG😭😭🤣
gah thank you!
Si lo haces en español... Sería genial
