    LOL, I would had done a higher quality video if I knew it would have over 60,000 views! Excuse the poor production please, but I can’t do it over.

    This is pure gold! I live in fear of assembling things. Ikea has this effect on people. But you have paved the way for incompetents, such as myself, to brave the bewildering world of diagrams and screws that don't seem to belong anywhere.
    A thousand thanks.

    TBH you're like the only person on RUclips that has made this build. Thank you so much.

      Thank you. I am really enjoying playing this instrument. Had to do a neck adjustment last month and it was no problem. I have put on flat wound stings to cut the finger noise, and it is a joy to play.

    PS - there is a good Hofner factory tour on RUclips - I was amazed how much hand work goes into the “Beatle” basses - The German-made models are largely hand-built instruments.

    Nice job on the bass! Regarding the screw head that snapped off on the tuning peg -- aside from choosing a correct size of drill bit for the pilot hole, coat the screw threads with candle wax first. This a good trick for any size screw, even lag bolts when going into a very hard wood. Makes a big difference!

    I bought one of these on ebay. I messed it up and used it as an art piece but my biggest gripe was the CRAZY neckdive.

    Thanks for posting this. I built this very kit a few years ago, and the finished result has become one of my favorite instruments.
    Like you, I noticed a definite volume difference between the front and rear pickups - this is because the rear pickup when flush mounted with the supplied ring can't be adjusted to the same height as the front pickup.
    I solved this by taking an old mousepad and cutting a surround to go under the pickup mounting ring. Turned out to be exactly the right height to allow proper fine tuning adjustment range and no one would ever know it was there. Bada bing, strings are right distance from the pickups, volume is full and balanced! Wish I could post a picture (I too documented my build, only with photos) but hopefully you get the idea from the description! Cheers

    That was inspiring. I never thought much about those little basses, but See they're really cool!! Now that I've watched your build, I realize they're hollow bodied, set neck instruments. They're actually very unique with the no sound hole thing! I'm building my first electric bass kit soon, and after its complete, building one of these classics is next. Thanks for the tips, that was a great video!!

      Some of my favourite things , ruclips.net/video/5wA9nhAHgFM/видео.html I finally finished my big 5 string build. I wasted a lot of time and effort with sub standard Krylon spray paint. Successive coats caused wrinkling in spite of long drying times, thin coats, low humidity, etc. it just bad paint. I still want a Horner violin bass kit. It seems more appropriate for playing tunes from my “Mel Bay Electric Bass” Book from the ‘60s!

    Glue holding up so far?
    Don't ask me how I know that - thank you for vid build.
    On my way now to check current prices, you made it look fun and not too hard. They (solo) should pay you for the 90,000 people who now know about this kit! $1 each (view) is more the reasonable. Tell them I said so.

    Great Video!! I want to build my own guitar and was looking at SOLO. I know going in to this that I am not buying a Gibson or a Fender but I want something I can make the way I want and have fun playing when finished. Since you have handled one of their kits I want to know, Would I be wasting my money?

    • @Julian-sw5xb
      @Julian-sw5xb  7 лет назад +1

      The price is so reasonable, I think there is good value for the money spent. I purchased and built a Telecaster kit from the US and it was very similar in it's price and quality.

    Looks like really sloppy Mnfct tolerances to me. But that said, if you were building that body from scratch you’d wind up will all kinds of little irregularities you’d have to deal with. I’d be way more concerned with the neck being off-center (pocket way thicker on one side) than having one side 1/8” taller than the other. PS good job on the build despite the minor issues looks and sounds like a great success. Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for sharing. I just got one of these 'solo music' kits (guitar), and I was curious about the poly-resin coat that they apply...what does it mean for my finishing options? Looks like it wasn't too difficult to sand it off and start from scratch.

    I've just started to build my kit beatle bass, with a fair amount of trepidation however I've been stuck into YT videos and am pretty keen to get it painted and playing. I'm spray staining mine with a burst colour . I have an air brush and all the stains I need. So this weekend I'm practicing on some pine to get used to the gun. Wish me luck. All this info in your video is gold thank you. Do you have a follow up video of the completed guitar? It would be great to see what advice or cautions you may have.

    Always thought the hofner violin bass was an expensive but 'cheap' tubby-sounding instrument. I guess it produces a sound similar to an upright acoustic bass but to my ears it's mostly a flabby imitation neither fish nor fowl. If it wasn't for Paul McCartney it would have disappeared long ago. In fact, for most of the Beatles catalog, the bass was mixed down to be nearly inaudible and certainly very muted for the most part...so other than the celebrity effect , don't see why these basses are so revered...just imho...I don't get it.

    The only reason I don’t want to buy it is because you use glue instead of screws to hold the neck on.

      @Julian-sw5xb  4 года назад

      You do know that most acoustic guitars have a glued neck. Glueing necks on instruments goes back centuries.

    I own a Fender P/J, a Rickenbacker 4003 and one time a Hofner. The Hofner was the worst of them all. As one bass player told me, the only thing a Hofner is good for is Beatle tunes

  • @eugenedebs3281
    @eugenedebs3281 7 лет назад

    Don't want to be a negative Nancy but that's not a hofner bass. An easy way you can tell is by the tuning pegs and the metal piece that holds the strings in place, a normal hofner bass has tuning pegs similar to a guitar and the metal piece at the bottom has three metal rods in the middle of the piece and not a squiggly metal piece.
