1/4 mile is one thing endurance is quite another. In the 1963 Daytona 500 FORD swept the top 5 spots and all of the 409 Chevys exploded. Only Pontiac & Oldsmobile were even close.

HaHa you're correct . It said both engines exactingly tuned?1 The 406 idled too smooth I'll almost bet they increased the valve lash. The 409 had a rough idle. 409's were prone to blow up because they were a big truck engine. Dick Brannan in a '62 Galaxie beat a many 413 Dodge and 409 Chevy!!!!!!

Probably a 390 or a 406 which are not bad but no match for a Chevy 409. A Ford 427 however is a totally different story. Even the Z11 which was a 427 cubic inch version of the 409 could not handle the Ford 427. this left Chevrolet to develop the Mark IV big block! After the wild styling race near the end of the 50's, the big 3 toned it down for '63 to '65. With automobiles you have two choices risk it all with a radical design or play it safe and just follow the leader but remain in the shadows of the competitor. I wouldn't say they all travel at the same pace it's more of a game of keeping up with the Joneses. One year your leader, the next your following but If you keep focusing on what your neighbor is doing sooner or later your going to end up just like them.

With that said they still had to buy a ford for this film so maybe the Chevy was a production model? Some test cars do survive though like you said. For example a employee at the Corvette factory in Kentucky managed to save a forgotten 1983 Corvette pilot prototype. It was part of the early production program so they made 43 cars in total all but the one were destroyed as it just sorta slipped through the cracks and hid under a tarp in the back lot for two years until it was pulled inside by the plant manager and displayed in the front hall of the plant then donated to the Corvette museum when it opened in the 90's

Well Yeah.... A 409 vs a what looked to be a 406 but maybe 390 or 427. 63 was first year for 427 ford. Chevy and their 409 had a couple year headstart. Wasnt much running down a dual quad 409. Not even a max wedge 426. If the 409 was tuned right. Im a diehard ford man that fines an older mopar pulls at the heart strings. But the 409 was easily one of the greatest all out racing engines ever built. Right next to the 426 max wedge III, tunnel port 427, boss 302 and 429 also the 428, 429 SCJ's and Id Never ever forget about the baddest of them all. And a chevy, the DZ302, LS6 and L88. And last but never least. The A990 and S/S Hemi's. The 60s through 71, except for the later SD455 Were the.baddest years for muscle car engine options. 425hp went through the body like thunder from a lightning strike 2 feet away. Todays 425hp can be achieved by a almost basic 4cyl. Fast but nowhere close to the break your neck torque of the Old Days. The sounds were Angellic while at the same time being so evil and ferocious. Technology has came along long way. But pure displacement with a rowdy ¾ solid lifter camshaft and 104 octane fuel and higher was all you ever needed to shake grandma's fine china right off the cabinet and straight to the floor. Smash, crash, crunch. The Good Ole' Days. Boy, do I miss them. But atleast i can say i was there. Ya kno

The earlier 409's had connecting rod issues in the high speed Daytona type races. I remember a Jr. Johnson interview where he said he received a few of the mark 4 type 409s and they really stayed together and he won races with them. He was my favorite driver. Some said he was the biggest cheater but he said it was all in how you interpreted the rules. A funny story he told was how he hid extra fuel. The rule stated the length of the fuel line not the diameter. He ran a long section if 2 inch line that gave him 2 or three extra gallons. A J Foyt was clever but Johnson was the best

my dad had a 62 belair sedan with a 327 and bought a 409 from a wrecked impala ss and dropped it in the belair back in the late 60s, he later on traded it for a 67 chevelle ss 396 in the 70s. ive seen old photos of it when my dad was in his 20s. i recently bought a 64 belair 2dr post from an old man and then bought a 409 at a car show a couple of months later, i never thought i would find one so i jumped on it, im currently restoring it, i can t wait til its complete

@@johnsalazard6659 Wow....what fun you're gonna have!! They made the "409" up through midyear 1965 when they replaced it with the "396". (I had a '66 Chevelle SS 396 later on myself). Any idea which year your motor is? Mine was factory Hipo all the way including factory dump tubes off the exhaust manifolds and no PS or PB. (from the factory) and the clutch was VERY stiff. Be sure and take lots of pictures of before and after....you'll be glad you did later on. I also had a '61 SS in the early '70s, but it was the "348" version that came out just before the "409" (which came out in mid '61). Here below is some more info on the "409". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_big-block_engine

my dad ran an engine code check and by the numbers, its a 1964-65 409 block, from what my dad is telling me, the engine had been modded a one time, it had heavy duty valve springs and other things. i got the heads cleaned and sandblasted, now im going to do the block when i have time and with this whole cv19 deal happening.

johnbecker I guess you're trapped in a time machine with the dial stuck on 1963 LOL. GM built some decent cars from 1946 - 1982. Fast forward to 1992. GM was getting away from RWD vehicles with a few exceptions including Impala SS and Corvette. Ford soldiered onward with full-size V8 RWD sedans including Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car (all essentially the same car), powered by the infamous 4.6 SOHC V8. In terms of COMBINED reliability, durability and fuel economy, Ford's SOHC V8 exceeds ANY V8 engine ever built by GM. Before you scream Northstar V8, remember that Northstar in any displacement were notorious for blowing head gaskets and cooking their piston rings, burning oil. I have been stomping around on this planet for 57 years, owned/driven/repaired dozens of cars and have NEVER seen a V8 engine which can touch Ford's SOHC V8 (I've owned 5).
My 95 Crown Vic, weighing in at 3950 lbs wet, at 60 mph on cruise control gets 33.5 MPG (US). Facts.
A few years ago I saw, with my own eyes, a 92 Grand Marquis with
430 000 miles on the odometer. Body a little rough. No significant oil consumption. Idled smoothly.
ORIGINAL ENGINE. ORIGINAL TIMING CHAIN. Facts my friend.

    First of all The Chevy is the 409 / 426 H.P. and the 406 / 405 H.P.
typical Chevy BULLSHIT . I owned a new 1962 " 406" Galaxie. Great car until I thought I would have it blue printed and the imbecil who worked on it and it never ran good aqgain. He also ruined 2 other Fe motors. Long story short, The only 409 I ever lost to was a set-up all at race car. I beat like 4 409's at the track and the street. I ran mid - high 13's without tubing headers , 4:11 rear and 7 inch tires. no Hurst shifter and that really hurt me. National record at the time was like high 12's so ....
