    My bag is a lot slimmer than yours Jan, I dont use flash for birding, I have a Tamrac bag that takes my 5DSR or 5D4 attached to a 1.4x and my 500 f4 mk2, other items carried on the bag include Bushnell 10x42 waterproof bins and camo fingerless mits (in a Lowepro 100AW utility bag) fibre cloth and rocket puffer, bluetooth speaker so I can locate speaker remotely in bushes to call birds in, a couple of black bin liners in case i have to get down low and its muddy, Benro Tripod (big old aluminium one, but it is solid) fitted with a Nest Carbon Fibre Gimbal head and most importantly my flask full of steaming hot coffee, Spare batteries and memory cards and that is about it.

    Nice work as usual Jan. I'm a bit surprised you don't use a dedicated lens for hand-held flight photography............something like the 400mm DO or perhaps a 300mm 2.8 with an extender. Does that just not really interest you and you're focused on portrait photography? Also, you mentioned in the video you're interested in suggestions for little camera accessories you might find handy. Here's one I love..............it let's me mount my phone on my tripod leg for easy use when using calls: cawcar.com/products.html#crowfoot

      Thanks Brian. I will check that out. Glad you enjoy the videos :) When it comes to a flight lens. I would love to have one, but have not found one that I like. I had 100-400, 2.8/300, 5.6/400. Ultimately, I always ended up using the 600 more than any of them, even for flight shots. The 5.6/400 was great, but the lack of IS made it not so nice to use. Ideally I'd want a lens that is good for flight shots and to "walk around". Then I also find that 3-400mm here in Australia are generally too short for flight shots. I have yet to find a place like High Island we visited or the Florida rookeries. There's just not as many big birds around and accessible. You are also correct that traditional flight shots are not one of my main priorities and I have not done any pelagics either. I suppose that's where the shorter lenses really shine. So that's why I am still stuck without one intermediate lens, but I would love to have one. Maybe Canon will release something like the Nikon 500PF, which would have good reach and could also be used when taking the big lens isn't suitable.

      @@jan_wegener For what it's worth, when I was still shooting Canon I had the 400mm f/4 DO II lens for hand-held flight work and loved it. Very easy to handle, small and light enough as a "walk around" lens and sharp as a tack. Not a cheap lens by any stretch but for flight photography I think it's the best option in the Canon line. Anyway, keep up the great work!

    Great vlog. I'm pretty happy with my Lowepro Pro Tactic BP 450 II. I can get everything I need into it for both bird photography and landscape /macro (two camera bodies + 3 lenses + accessories). The outer surface has neat 'straps' for attaching all kinds of containers, pouches, and things quite easily.

    Hi Jan, I recently turned to the dark side and changed to Nikon, I now only have 4 lenses and because I no longer can carry the weights of something like your 600 I have invested in a 500mm PF which is an effective compromise and easily handheld for an oldie like me. I enjoy your videos, the way you present them and the informative content.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 года назад

      Thanks Grace. Yes, I know many people who have switched to the 500PF. It must be a great lens. I would certainly keen to get one of them if I was shooting Nikon or if Canon ever releases one. I am sure we see more great lenses like that in the future when mirrorless technology advances

    Hi Jan, thanks for sharing! As a backpack I would recommend the Gitzo 45l Adventury Bag. Fits my set up of 1dx mk2, 600 mk3 plus 1.4 extender. Also no issue to check it in as hand luggage. The 600 mk3 is 1kg lighter than your version, I can easily carry it around in my hand the entire day. As I want to be quick and versatile I only use a monopod when walking in the field which gives me the results and flexibility I'm looking for. I also spend a lot of time photographing birds on migration, and then I shoot handheld to catch the birds in flight. Takes a bit of practice, but the lighter version 3 lens and the 14 fps on the 1dx make it an ideal combination for my style of photography. I use the 100-400 mm mk 2 on some occasions, for example when shooting birds on a pelagic trip or when taking a more environmental shot.

    Jan: I'm a fan of your distinct style of bird portraits. May I ask a few questions? Do you expect to continue to evolve a creative vision or are more focused on building up your collection of different birds? Do you consider yourself more photographer or more birder? (On my side, I am more birder. Photography is a gratifying means to capture the beauty and diversity of birds.). Thanks for any thoughts you care to share. Best wishes in all cases.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 года назад +2

      Hey,
      I see my style as constantly evolving. It might not be as obvious to the viewer at times cause sometimes it’s just changes in how I approach things, but I always want to get better and explore new avenues. I take a lot more images than I edit, so I often only end up editing one favourite image, although I have taken many more variations. I love birds, but I am not a birder, ticking off birds or the like doesn’t do it for me. I like to get a nice photo of them

    Nice video, Jan. Always enjoy them, thank you for your generosity. I might start to think about leaving a lens home after watching this - I frequently carry a 70-200 F/2.8 (Nikon) around, but rarely use it now unless I know the birds will be very close … more a security blanket than anything as it was my original 'big' lens I use to use with a 2x converter! Re. backpacks, I have two: (i) a LowePro Flipside 400 AW II (good for travel as it is light (and they used to make a 500 as well, which I assume would fit a 600 mm lens), and (ii) a LowePro Whistler Backpack 450 AW, which is heavier/burlier than the Flipside, but I love this backpack (it is bombproof, great protection inside for the camera gear, very waterproof, and has lots of room). Interestingly, I took the Flipside with me overseas last year and got caught out in a horrendous storm in the Brecon Beacons in Wales. I walked in torrential rain for over 2 hours and was thinking my camera gear was going to be toast by the time I got back to the car. The Flipside (and the Whistler) has a rain coat that folds out and over the bag, and this must have saved everything inside; essentially it was a bit damp inside, but the camera gear was fine, so I have great respect for both of these packs from a water resistance perspective. Both of these packs open up from the back pad side of the pack, which means you don't have to lay the pack down on the back pad if it is wet or muddy, which I think is a real bonus. LowePro have also fairly recently released the Powder range, which get good reviews too (but more aimed at snow sports I think). Anyway, these are my experiences with the bags I have. Thanks again.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 года назад +1

      Hey Karl,
      yes sometimes we just take gear just for the sake of it and it weighs us down.
      I will check those packs out. The Lowepro I'm using has certainly worked well for me over the years

    Very informative video. I have the same short lenses as you. I use the 5Dsr camera, which delivers extremely detailed files and also allows you to crop with almost no quality loss. I use the 500 f4 IS versión 1 and the front section of this lens has the all weight turning this lens in a very inconfortable lesn to hand hold after a while. So, almost all the time is on the tripod.

    Thanks for another great video, Jan, and the work you put in for the overhead "gear" view certainly paid off! I always keep a stash of business cards (old school!) in one of the pockets and a folded trash bag for when I get caught in torrential rain. The perfect camera bag is such a hard topic as good bags seem to come and go. I love my GuraGear Bataflae, and like your bag, it's the perfect size to deal with small overhead bins (and on several trips I've had to jam it under my seat to make it work). Unfortunately it is no longer made. After disappearing for a few years, GuraGear is now back, but they only have the Kiboko style bag at the moment, so I'll keep watching to see if they roll out an improved Bataflae line someday. I was keen to see the differences in our respective bags. Mine had the old 600 mm f4 lens or the old 300 mm f2.8 lens, First choice camera Canon 7d mkii second choice Canon 7d. I also did not have the Flash Point battery pack. However i do carry a 1.4 extender and 2X extender. Otherwise remarkably similar camera bags except for the shorter lenses. As I do not earn money from my photography I am afraid I am stuck with my old generation lenses, The Flash Point battery pack is on my list of items to get. I do carry a 1000 lumen torch with attachment to my flash off camera bracket, this assists for night time photography focus. I use the Hahnel R600 flash as the battery is better than using AA batteries, lasts better and when using fill in flash can give me a follow up shot or two.

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 года назад

      Hi Kirk,
      Yes, I think some things will be similar in a lot of bird photographer's bag, and others will be different, so it's interesting to see. That torch sounds interesting. I shot with the old 600 for many many years, but had the chance to change over for very little money some time ago, so I did. But at the current pricing I am not at all interested in the newest version for instance.

    • @kirkwest3721
      @kirkwest3721 4 года назад +1

      @@jan_wegener The torch is a LedLenser MT10 and I bought a mountain Bike clamp for it and a remote switch attachment so it is easy for me to switch on and off. Makes life easier as I do not require an assistant to shine the torch for me. The size is definitely small enough and light enough, other torches were just too big.

      www.naturescapes.net/articles/health/flash-photography-and-the-visual-system-of-birds-and-animals/ the use of flash does not harm the eyes of the subject that normally lives in the light when the flash is used properly. I wouldn’t use a flash on any nocturnal animal purely because their eyes are far more sensitive and if startled they could be temporarily blinded by the light and hurt themselves if they moved. I would also never tell/recommend to someone what they should and shouldn’t do unless I had unequivocal proof they were actually harming their subjects. I thought the use of bird calls might have been a more controversial subject - anyway Jan keep doing what you do, I am sure you are environmentally/photographically responsible and keep your subjects wellbeing the highest priority.
