Had to go the hospital twice after splitting my hand open while whittling, wish I had found this video first. You've re-inspired me to get back into whittling, so thank you.

the only time i ever whittled was about 3 weeks ago, I made a little spatula for raticide paste for some traps, using a box cutter and a tiny scrap of fir from the neighbor's attic. Those 5 minutes of whittling calmed me more than any meds or meditation technique my therapist suggested. now I'm all about watching youtube and buying a knife and whittling the crap of any wood I find while imagining said wood to be my boss
Finally, i found someone who goes in detail of the what and how on whittling. Thank you so much. I will follow your advices and tutorials in order to learn how to do whittling properly.
I have a good set of knifes and the mantinace kit for them and no knowledge of how to get started (I bought it all wanting to make my son something for his 1st birthday he's now 1 and a half) maybe his second birthday I'll have been able to make him his own little ducky (loves ducks) thanks for this getting started has always been the hardest part for me

I like that you gave the pros and cons for each of the options and also gave sources for where to find equipment as well as sources for information. This is the most complete beginners guide I've ever watched and I appreciate the heck out of you for doing this. Thank you so much.
Cheaper blades are good for beginners because they teach you how to Sharpen your tools. Sharpening is one of the most important things you can learn if you want to enjoy working with wood whether it be whittling or anything else. This is my advice for anybody who wants to start with woodwork.
I whittled a wooden coat hanger that i could place into metal holes at work and keep my jacket clean. I used pieces that chipped off pallets in the warehouse and i went through quite a few of them. Seeing this now. I’m seeing a lot of the techniques you used are very similar to what i would do and it almost came naturally with doing it so much. Just thought that was interesting.
You can usually figure some stuff out on your own by actively practicing it yourself with repeated practice, which is how many of us learned the craft to begin with :)
I tried to get into whittling a while back and didn’t get very far, sharpening was extremely intimidating. Watching these videos has gotten me excited to break it back out and get into it again, thanks so much for these there was a serious lack of content this good for this hobby.
HI Brandon I used to sharpen freehand exclusively and still do some. But I bought a lansky set that has 4 different stones and is simple as pie and will get you a razor sharp edge easy they are abou.t the same price as a good whetstone
I highly recommend the Burrfection videos here on RUclips to supplement what was taught here about sharpening. The Burrfection guy is also a good calm teacher who knows how to explain himself well.

My first few pieces are allready done and many more are on the way, just because of your high quality contet! Thanks a lot and cheers from Austria!
You are so good at telling people the things they don't even know they should ask... You are truly a teacher. You are a scholar. You, specifically you, could teach _anything_ you wanted to. Thank you for teaching us about this hobby.
I went into this blind after needing something to do with my hands while out camping. I made a whetstone out of a river stone I’d ground flat and it served me well enough to whittle a bird out of young wood. This is a big step up from what I was doing, and I’m excited to learn more. Thanks for the valuable info! 😁
It's good that you show your 'war carving' wounds. I have been carving for better than 25 years on and off, and always find new ways to get cut while carving in places I thought never existed...lol! It's not that carving is a risky thing, it's that 'human nature' of bravado takes over. Silly things when you drop your guard. I think because I take my time now and more so 'a little wiser', I don't get 'war carving' wounds as much.

My great grandfather taught me to whittle. He always had had his pocket knife and would whittle sticks on a bench swing, while we played in the yard. He would say, “Whistle while you whittle.” 😊
I was fortunate enough to inherit several of my grandfather’s woodcarving knives, many of them made by himself, a few by various knife makers in South Texas. I need to get them back into use. Thank you for this video. I've wanted to whittle since I was a kid but never knew where to start. I spent the evening looking at knives on Amazon and after ordering a set (glad I decided to go with the Beaver Craft ones and not something cheaper) I decided I better get an Idea of how to start and this was perfect, I'm much more confident about getting started than I was.

Thank you so much for making this accessible to everyone! I love how you explained everything while showing it to us. Been thinking about getting into whittling and wood carving but wanted to see first how difficult it might be to start off with and how accessible equipment were gonna be.
Wow, I tried getting into this 2 years ago but I remember there being no good video guides on how to start. This channel is awesome I'm definitely gonna get a set
Ok just used your link to get my beaver craft starter kit. Can't wait till it gets here, I used to do tons of whittling with a flexcut but can't find my old whittling kit for the life of me. I have a new grandbaby and have been making him toys with my scroll saw but it just doesn't satisfy me like whittling.
Woot! It came in today and already made a mushroom fairy house and half of a leprechaun will finish the other half after my thumb stops bleeding, but hey the set came with 2 Band-Aids. Lmao guess that's the learning curve.
About a decade ago I made a dollhouse size rocking horse for a friend. This year I bought myself whittling knives and set about trying to carve a pipe out of some wild cherry- not recommended XD. I’ve moved on to some projects with softer woods and they’ve been much nicer, and I have indeed collected my first go of cuts from errant slips. I got Beavercraft knives and did chip them up a bit on that old gnarled wild cherry, but they cut fine still so I’m happy! It’s a nice little pastime, thanks for the video, it helped me correct some of my mistakes before they became bad habits ^-^
Huh this is really eye opening. I've always made a distinction between whittling and carving where stuff like this is carving and whittling is just going at whatever stick is handy with your pocket knife to pass the time, so the more specialized knives and proper wood blanks are a surprise to se in a whittling video.
Thank you new subscriber my two children want to try it so I’m here learning the safely side and about best tools and kits saved so I can come back and watch again
Thanks for the video, I've not started whittling yet, but this was a very helpful primer. It's also given me the confidence to have a go at sharpening my swiss army knives too.
Fantastic introduction to whittling! I almost bought the wrong knife before seeing this. I'll get the flexcut (which is also a third of the price). Thanks and keep up the great work!
Great video. I've been wanting to get into whittling and bought some books, but you videos help out more where the books lack explanation. I was going to start buying the tools but was hesitant on which brands, but your video helped out a lot and I have ordered the knife, basswood and strop. Thank you.
Watched the video. Got excited. Bought my first 3 knives, a strop and a few other things. Tried it. Figured out my hands hurt. Tried to make the fox from your tutorial. Started goofing around. Sharpened my knife and managed to nick the strop in 3 places. 10/10 will try again, haha. I feel like such a beginner >.
I really like this video, and found it very informative. I came to this channel because I recently acquired a hand carved from ebony wood. It really made me curious, so I had to do some of my own research.
Wow! Thanks so much for the video! You have totally inspired me to start whittling (: I think I’m going to buy some wood tomorrow and see what I can do following your awesome tutorials
Awesome video! I always wanted to try making something with woods but all the wood working guides are so intimidating with so many tools and such. But this video is way simpler and actually quite accessible for someone like me who doesn't have much space nor money. Thank you for great video!
You're welcome! The whole goal of this channel is to lower that barrier to entry and get more people interested in the craft with just the essentials :)
Thanks for the quality video sir. Your attention to detail is appreciated. Also I can tell you like to pay attention to your viewers/subscribers. I'll be back for more videos. Thanks for the content!
I started wood carving and whittling a while ago And can confirm Leathermans and Swiss Army knives are good for beginners so some of the pointers he has are correct however if you’re actually gonna wheel some thing like an object say a knife or anything else wear safety gloves I’ve gotten like three cuts so wear safety
Thank you so much for this! I've been wanting to get into whittling but there aren't enough videos talking about what you need to get and do in order to get started. This was so helpful and you've earned a new subscriber :D
Just got my Helvie knives in the mail. Upgraded from the beavercraft and it’s a world of difference. The thinner knife is good got mouthes and eyes. The Helvies are expensive but I’d say they are worth the money and wait.
Ive got a stack of all different types of knives, not getting to use them as much as id like so whittling will be a perfect way to make the most out of my crazy knife habbit 😄👍
I draw and I was looking forward to try wood sculpings, this video is really interesting and relaxing, it's good to see other types of art and maybe try it
I just came across this very good inspirational video and wanted to share - I am not whittling at all, just thought about it and saw the Victorinox. I use the Swisschamp for 15 years or more, and used it many times for many hobbies I do. The lock on the blade (Slip Joint I think?) is VERY dangerous (Like he said, no matter how good you are) and you should think about it before trying to start with it, that it because it is readily available most of the time, and you dont know how to hold a blade (or think you know) and next up is the blade closed on you with great force and that's...that's really bad. I did get bit a few times in my life but since I got the blade snap at me because I was probably an idiot, looking at the closed knife with my finger 2mm away for its path...Damn, please be careful guys, and thank you sir for the great video.
Had to go the hospital twice after splitting my hand open while whittling, wish I had found this video first. You've re-inspired me to get back into whittling, so thank you.

you've inspired me to try whittling again :) I tried once but I had zero experience and I couldn't find things that I wanted to make. but ur tutorials are so helpful and not too complicated and I love all ur little animals and things, so I'd love to try making them too. ty for putting all I need to know in one video, makes it easy to go back at refresh everything haha
This guy is a genius so professional and doesn’t skip any details. Must say this is the best utube video that I have seen.you could learn so much from this man. Some on here tell you their life story before they begin, others can be talented but the music or voices end up giving me a migraine. THANK YOU for sharing your talent and what a wonderful teacher you would make ( if you are not already) . Angie 😊🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you!!
i just want to be a grizzled old cowboy carving wood by a fire while i tell my apprentice my dark past
I jumped into my first project with an opinel and a piece of black locust and learnt the importance of good gloves / finger placement the hard way, stay safe out there
Thank you so much for making this accessible to everyone! I love how you explained everything while showing it to us. Been thinking about getting into whittling and wood carving but wanted to see first how difficult it might be to start off with and how accessible equipment were gonna be.
You are so talented and skillful. Your work is wonderful.
PLSSS i have never even BEEN interesting in whittling before but i got the fox video in my reccomended and now i am-
Incredible tutorial! Most in depth yet not overly complicated, and comprehensive guide I've seen!
Excellent teaching for the young carvers ..Thank you sir for your time
Thanks Gene!
Wow, I tried getting into this 2 years ago but I remember there being no good video guides on how to start. This channel is awesome I'm definitely gonna get a set
My first whittling supplies arrive tomorrow, I can't wait to get started!
This is something I’ve wanted to get into for awhile, your video made it feel a lot less intimidating, I’m excited to get started!
Yay! Im glad 😊
That is the goal of the channel after all!
You're welcome!
It's interesting how something as simple as the type of wood you use can drastically change your overall carving experience.
Growing up I was always curious about whittling but I had no idea where to start or how it works. Your videos are amazing. Tyyy
New to whittling thank you!!
Thanks, this should make me a whittle bit better!
Huh this is really eye opening. I've always made a distinction between whittling and carving where stuff like this is carving and whittling is just going at whatever stick is handy with your pocket knife to pass the time, so the more specialized knives and proper wood blanks are a surprise to se in a whittling video.
Yeppers!! There's a bunch of stuff made just for whittling!
Thank you new subscriber my two children want to try it so I’m here learning the safely side and about best tools and kits saved so I can come back and watch again
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
Thank you.
This has taught me more than the wood carving merit badge
Ruh roh! I'm hooked already, can't wait to finally get into whittling!
thank you for this video! it was easy to understand for a complete beginner and non-native English speaker like myself.
Used to whittle as a kid, sort of lost touch with it. I think I might have to go get a new knife, feeling inspired.
Alright maybe I can do this. I'm going to have to explore this channel more. Thank you for the inspiration.
You got rhis!!
Can't wait to start doing this it seems so fun and relaxing
Watched the video. Got excited. Bought my first 3 knives, a strop and a few other things. Tried it. Figured out my hands hurt. Tried to make the fox from your tutorial. Started goofing around. Sharpened my knife and managed to nick the strop in 3 places. 10/10 will try again, haha. I feel like such a beginner >.
We all start somewhere, but it sounds like you got a good start going here :)
As a newbie I found this so informative & comprehensive. Looking forward to my knives coming next week.
Thankyou !
Those figures are awesome! Would love to gift my baby boy something like this.
I'm going to try woodcarving thanks to your videos!
I think they're really nice and calming and I really enjoy watching them
Thank you! I hope you have just as much fun as I do!
I really like this video, and found it very informative. I came to this channel because I recently acquired a hand carved from ebony wood. It really made me curious, so I had to do some of my own research.
You inspire me to pick up whittling again...
Lots of excellent up front necessary info- thank you
Wow! Thanks so much for the video! You have totally inspired me to start whittling (:
I think I’m going to buy some wood tomorrow and see what I can do following your awesome tutorials
Awsome! Met me know if you have any questions pop up!
This is so thorough and helpful, thank you!
This is a fantastically helpful and well presented video. THANK YOU!
This was so helpful and you've earned a new subscriber :D
i just asked questions on ur other video that u completely answered here, thank u so much for giving the basics in great detail to noobs like me
Ha, I was littlerally about to link this video to ya :)
Just got my Helvie knives in the mail. Upgraded from the beavercraft and it’s a world of difference. The thinner knife is good got mouthes and eyes. The Helvies are expensive but I’d say they are worth the money and wait.
Nice video! Stumbled upon it and may try whittling myself now. Great breakdown. Thank you.
Great and clear introduction! Thank you for this video, I'm going to start whittling with my swiss army knife and we'll see where it goes :)
I haven't done any whittling or carving in nearly 30 years. Probably a little rusty. 😆
Great vid, Man. Thanks!
Whittling and carving looks so incredibly fun, I will make sure that I am going to try this and enjoy it! ^^
Ive got a stack of all different types of knives, not getting to use them as much as id like so whittling will be a perfect way to make the most out of my crazy knife habbit 😄👍
Lol, I have three drawers full in my toolbox of just whittling knives. Completely understand you.
Great video, well explained. Awesome close up, really can see the details
Quality training video. Kudos sir.
Thank you for sharing this Very interesting and tutorial video
