Evochron Legacy - One Man's Quest To Make The Best Space Sandbox
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 янв 2016
- Evochron Legacy from StarWraith is the latest in a long line of spaceship games developed by one guy. Each iteration has added more features to the spaceship sandbox, and Evochron Legacy offers the dedicated gamer a suite of features wider than almost any other space game, if you can get past the complicated user interface.

Two things:
#1 This looks awesome
#2 This looks very intimidating
You're right on both. I have no experience with this game, but I've played Evochron Mercenary extensively. It's really good but intimidating.
apparently the tutorials are a few good hours, so theres that for the intimidation
Lovin the sudden surge of space sims appearing.
+Shawn Ception It's brilliant. They're all coming back. Although annoyingly as a space sim developer, it means it's way harder to get noticed now.
+Shawn Ception Actually, he released Evochron Mercenary in 2011.
+Shawn Ception only took 20 years. 2040 is gonne be awesome!
+Shawn Ception It's really amazing!
+Barry Smith You just gotta be innovative! And not RSI-brand innovative, actually delivering on your promises innovative.
(goteem)
what happened 10 years ago that made all these individual people suddenly go 'I'm going to make a massive space simulation game... and i'm going to do it alone'?
+ben dover
One guy succeeded, claimed the glory, and the rest decided that there was no longer any reason for them to do so.
+ben dover Everyone was hit with gamma radiation and it caused them to lose all reason
+ben dover Because we're fascinated by space. And we're programmers, so we find creating new things more fun than playing old ones. And once you've handled the basics of software development, game design, procedural generation systems and 3D maths, it's not all that hard.
+Barry Smith I'm already interested in physics, but I have no idea of how the whole 'game creation' process works, is it hard?
+B. oamere (Boamere) but some turned into a big green killing machines? right? lol
One guy: Makes entire game by himself
Star Citizen and Elite: *Kicks rock*
Yay, so glad you're covering this game. Thank you!
+Space Game Junkie I wish I had the time to really give it a go, but the day job leaves me very little spare time.
+Scott Manley I hear ya, I'm in the same boat. Hopefully your coverage will get more folks to play it regardless. :)
+Space Game Junkie
Same problem here, and being in my mid forties now doesn´t help. But after downloading and playing the demo.... I couldn´t believe the developer cited the following on his site:"While Evochron and Arvoch are my spare time hobby and my resources are quite limited,".
There are a lot of projects running with millions of dollars (or Euros) at their disposal ... and here is so much GAME. More than in many of the large productions of the last few years. I think the last time I´ve encountered something complex like this one was Falcon 3.0 in the nineties. And I am willing to play E:L and I already buyed it - exact for the reason you cited Space Game Junkie.
Woooohoo! I hope you're enjoying it as much as I am. I've a series of videos on it myself if you need help, and the Evochron Subredit is very helpful. :)
Thanx! And I´ve downloaded the Manuals (for E:M) from the Forum already. I MUST make some time free to play this!
I could not believe I missed this in all these years - I´ve seen some YT vids of E:M, well and there were so many other games in the pipe (Elite:Dangerous, Star Citizen and so on) that I forgot about it. This was the game I was always looking for and I was just distracted by those million dollar productions.
Evochron has the best implementation of Newtonian flight physics of any space game I have played.
It is extremely impressive that only one guy made this game. It looks like an absolutely massive space game. I really hope this is his full time job.
It is, he's living off the sales of this and the previous iterations of Evochron, and games that were before that.
I got inspired by this video and now I am trying to learn how to program and make a spaceship game. thanks scott
To me, Evochron games are sort of like a paradise behind an entry wall made of unobtainium, several meters thick.
+Morgan Wood How come?
Because there is a ton of systems and stuff that you have to learn, and even after that it's a whole different thing to put into practice. It's not the most user-friendly game.
Morgan Wood Well once you learn it, it's great! Like anything else in life.
+Morgan Wood The same is true for all space "sims" (not space arcade shooters). You have to understand the space flight controls, space ship systems and upgrades, trade mechanics and economy, navigation, fighting techniques plus a ton of menus and dialog screens. The slow grind for more credits is also a common theme.
The problem I'm having now is that I own X3 and Rebirth, Elite Dangerous and Evochron Legacy and have played them all for several hours each. But I feel like I need to focus on one game in order to get anywhere. You need to sink hours every day into these games, which isn't always possible. Otherwise you'll still be saving up for that bigger ship this month next year.
+Morgan Wood Well, it's a simulator. You can't make user-friendly simulators without sacrificing the complexity of this genre.
I played Evochron Mercenary. There is a ton of stuff to do. This looks identical with some graphic enhancements. Sand box games can only be so entertaining. Look at your real life, the biggest sandbox of all. You still get bored with it. There is no such thing as a sandbox without boredom. Evochron is a game for people who can self direct to alleviate their boredom. You can fuel scoop the sun, you can build bases of various types. Mining and missions get you money with which you can continually upgrade your ship even to the point of equipping it with a walker! (mech) There are asteroid caves to fly through... and the majority of the stuff in a sector/map you need to locate yourself to populate the map. A video of this game showing all of the features would be a couple of hours long and you would need the enthusiasm to produce such.
Love your vids Scott. Keep it up!
You need to be under 200 meters for tractor beam to work. Also "V" is the external view key and f11 enables night vision.
This is... Really impressive actually. For one guy this is pretty amazing.
This game with a few sound, graphic, hud mods is my favorite space sim of all time and I've played them all!
xALBx 35 what mods?
Scott really didn't do this game justice. There is a lot of depth and complexity in the Evochron games. It may not have as fancy graphics, but IMO it does a lot of things better than some recent big budget titles. One of my biggest complaints about space "sims" is that they are essentially airplanes in space. It's not perfect, but Evochron takes a more realistic approach. For example, there are no artificial speed limits on ships. With IDS engaged it will limit your ship based on the IDS scale you're currently using, but you can switch it off and fully control your ship. With IDS off, if you fire your thrusters you will keep accelerating until you run out of fuel. There is a lot more to do than "Euro Truck in Space." You can still do that though, but there are a larger variety of things to do.
There is a demo on the game's website. You have unlimited time in the tutorials, but I think you're limited to 2 hours in the actual game, which isn't enough time to even scratch the surface.
+jimnms I've been toying with the combat and its great!
+jimnms Yes I totally hear you although, I've played enough 6DOF combat sims that I realise space is sorely lacking, the only strategy that ever makes sense in 1v1 is keeping guns on target and orbiting.
I was disappointed when the tutorial talking about flying without the limitations of gravity or atmosphere as if that made the game better, having to deal with flight envelopes and gravity improves combat by adding variables. I was initially unhappy with Elite: Dangerous and its artificial rotation rate limits, but it's clearly a mechanic to improve gameplay, and it is first and foremost a game.
Been looking for something like this since Elite Dangerous reignited my love of the genre. This might well do nicely. It's great to see this genre becoming a thing again. It even gives me hope that certain franchises, like Freespace, might come back.
Please more vids for this game! I have been following this channel and decided to subscribe the moment I saw an evochron game!
Very nice presentation Scott. I never knew it was only one guy.
This made me crave for a Scott Manly vs Evochron dev interview.
holy shit, i didn't know there was another evochron game. Mercenary was amazing.
+Myztkl-Kev This is even better!
Space Game Junkie It seems that way, need to wait until next week to pick it up though :(
+Avenu the eternal This game is almost a complete rewrite. New graphics engine with larger planets, territorial Wars, a revised economy, more building options, new equipment, a better tutorial and a lot more. He's been working on this for around 3-4 years.
+Myztkl-Kev I know right?!? I love the flight mechanics of the games that this guy makes, and loved Mercenary. Going to pick this up right now :)
Seems like the Elite: Dangerous devs should give this guy a call.
Been playing this for ages and I love it tbh.
That laugh was quite incredible
+DJ Google Plus I was totally caught by surprise.
+Scott Manley You freaked my dog out
crazy what one man with dedication can achieve... i´m looking at you, ED...
I cant believe it, you managed to find a space game which has an even higher learning curb than Elite Dangerous!
Learning *curve
Thanks :D
+Nate Martin Are you seriously saying E:D has a steep learning curve? It's probably one of the easiest modern space flight games out there. Kerbal Space Program, EVE Online and Evochron are MUCH more complicated.
For people who are coming into a game like that for the first time it can have a short (but steep curve). It would be much better if there were more tutorials than just the bare bone basics on fighting and travel. There is a ton of stuff it leaves up to you to figure out.
sigh...anyway. This game looks cool.
I was waiting for you to play this :)
I think it is great to see all these amazing space games coming out. Fun times indeed.
On the other hand, it is really disheartening/discouraging me from taking the step to build my own game with my own ideas in this genre, since there are so many people already doing it, and it looks like they are doing it in ways better than I think I ever could, because they have such a head-start of experience.
THANKYOU FOR DOING THIS FINALLY!
graphics are actually quite good given the scale of the game. I wouldn't knock Rodina for it either...these types of games don't need hyperrealistic textures to look lovely
Scott, you should try playing Aurora 4x. While not that graphically advanced, it is the grandest 4x game out there. Plus its free
Just to add, this game has come far since this video
I just picked it up.
Pretty cool so far.
Cheers!
@@rybuds47 yea it's great! I'm only a few hours in and damn there's a lot to learn haha
loving it so far though. Very immersive.
I always find it interesting with these games how 1 guy can make a better game than huge companies. Sure it lacks some polish but my god the features this 1 guy adds to these games AND adds multiplayer, this guy has skill.
+Jimmyv buck It helps not to have suits with no gaming background trying to tell you what to do, or do it within a ridiculous short timeframe, forcing you to cut out features and mechanics.
Had no idea this was out. Mercenary was just amazing. Especially with mods.
I played one of the earlier entries in the Evochron series, Evochron Mercenary. It was pretty good, but rather difficult, even with the pretty in-depth tutorials.
Wow, I seen demo of StarWraith as demo for Dark Basic programming language. It was... 17 years ago. My first space flight simulator, actually.
Actually, it still looks like it still using the same 3d engine.
With a nice personalized Reshade (just as with Elite Dangerous, Kerbal Space Program, No Mans Sky, etc) this might actually look really really nice. I'd personally raise the saturation, add a bit of Chromatic Abberation (to help make objects more distinct in the overly high dark contrast) and soften the bloom more to soften the contrast.
I just began my foray into flight sims recently. I went and got the sticks and also a dedicated chair. I began playing WWII and Jet Fighter games. Something was nagging me about not having a space game.I was researching and will definitely pick up Star Citizen I caught the VR bug so i'm looking forward to Elite Dangerous and Eve Valkyrie. Ran across some Evochron videos yesterday.I tried to hold out because I wanted my first space experience to be in VR but Evochron is to appealing to pass up! Elite Dangerous has a ton of "no content" steam reviews (although i will play anyway later this year) It is amazing that one person can create a game that rivals or surpasses the larger titles. As I made my final decision on Evochron I kinda accepted that this may be the Vanilla WoW of Space Sims and that after playing this I may not enjoy the competition. I bought this around midnight and played until 3 am lol.
awesome dude, this is the whole reason why I want to get into PC gaming
I don't know if this was mentioned, but the tractor beam was getting stuff out of the box, that's how you got water. You just need to hold it for longer. Great video either way!!
+Bdubb1337 Yeah I figured that out when I was editing the video afterwards.
Haha, I figured you did, you're a bright man! Nice to see Evochron still going! Keep up the great work, Scott! :)
I'm working on my own space sim called 'Vast'. It will have some very unique features. It's still in heavy development, but I plan to release it for free. www.github.com/zesterer/vast It's written in pure C++ and OpenGL (without an engine). Just thought you might be interested.
+Barry Smith that's so cool ! i'll make sure to keep a bookmark on that !
Wndrr Thanks! I realise it's a long way from being finished. I built a prototype that had a flyable spacecraft and a procedural planet (check my RUclips).
Barry Smith i'll check it tomorow, cause i'm dead tired (spent the whole day coding, u know the deal, right ?)
and i respect your work even more than you probably think ! I tried to do a bit'o 3D a few years ago and ... hell, it was time consuming !
so, if you need help, i'll have a lot of free time in a few months :) i'd be glad to help ;-)
good luck with that project, and mybe some day will vast be considered the successor of star citizen and such games ? who knows :)
+Wndrr Thanks. I'm all ears for advice and help. I'm a software developer by nature and not a gamer so I'll need all the advice I can get when it comes to actually making the thing play well.
+Barry Smith Yay more space games!
nice review
Good job on the pilots name :)
Graphics may be "primitive" but one thing I appreciate is that the fonts are readable even when the video is in a window on the webpage.
man I loved evo mercenary, what a great game
This is more complet that Elite (not very hard you will tell me, and you are right), and developped by only 1 guy, that's really impressive
I heard the other, or first(?), Evochron had ship building/Customization, does this also have one? Also, what's the biggest ship you can pilot?
i subscribed because you used that awesome name steve. such a good name! well done!
X3:TC is still by far, the best spacegame i've ever played. You start in a small fighter or freighter, then work your way up and do whatever you want. Up to the point of where you controll a multimilion industry, capitalshipfleets. Fly your fighter and dock in a capitalcarrier, then fly the carrier, transfer to a capital battleship in the fleet and enjoy the fireworks ... the first year i played X3:TC, i believe i spent 1800+ hours, every minute full enjoyment.
A shame X:Rebirth ruined it completely.
But that this game has been done by ONE person, is an amazing feat, i hope the game gets alot of attention and becomes a huge success.
Best of luck to him, i hope he doesn't end up like Limit Theory.
I don't know if you've heard, but Egosoft announced X4 a week or two ago. They made specific mention that they knew Rebirth wasn't the sequel many people had been expecting, and they were hoping to make a true X3 sequel this time.
Glad to hear. It would be cool to see them add a 'vehicle customizer', that allows you to tack parts onto existing ships-- meaning you could turn a fighter into a gigantic warship if you wanted.
They don't have to do a whole lot of thinking about the mechanics of that.
Just copy Avorion's ship-building concept.
I actually played Evochron Mercenary... for about 30 minutes I think and never went back, because I found the game utterly impenetrable
this is pretty amazing given its jsut one guy who developed it all himself...
the way it should be... look Adobe or Autodesk, you wonder what are people doing in thoses Cie
It's "in the pipe 5 By 5" or "5 x 5". Common mistake though. Awesome vid, brother. I've had my eye on this for a while.
"primitive hud"
that's a whole lot of "primitive" going on that hud 0.o
id never heard of trackir before. is it worth getting?
Can't wait till we can land in atmospheric planets in Elite Dangerous
Great music in this game
29:20 i think he just said "in the pipe five five five". Being a lover of avionics knowledge i didn't expect that! "five by five" is a term mean that communications quality is perfect. Although in the case of Aliens (and Starcraft by extension of the reference [and apparently Xcom]), I suppose it means approach vector is perfect. Check out the Five by Five article on wikipedia for more info :)
So by the way, it's "five by five" which is referring to the radio signal strength and clarity if I remember correctly.
Scott, have you ever concerned a play-through of Independence War 1 or 2?
+PsyckoSama
That were the best space combat games i ever played. Hell, the intro of I-War1 was really MATURE compared to the whole Wing Commander series (with the notable exception of Privateer 2: The Darkening)
Really, really great games (although I found Independence War 2 a very hard game). They will ever be on my list of my personal Top 5 games. (And I play since the mid eighties)
Scott, would really be nice if you would a video.
What's the different in gameplay between this and Mercenary, anyone knows?
I've said this in a few places, and I'll say it here as well...
I'm not a patient person. There are few games I've played that require patience and the rewards come later that I've actively liked. I don't like complex things, where I have to spend a long time studying the basic controls and things. Yet I like this game (and Mercenary before it). I find myself enjoying my play time in this game, even with the complexity. It's not perfect, and I can fully understand why some people can't get into it or just don't like it, but a game where I REALLY feel like I'm flying some little ship in space is few and far between (or not out yet, or the people making it are releasing the expansions in a way I don't agree with...) and so I have this game. The fact it's made by mostly one guy, and sells for so little is nothing short of amazing to me. Add to the fact that the game is easily moddable just keeps things interesting. It also helps that Vice (The game's creator) is a really nice guy who actually cares about the players when they have issues running his game.
Sure, I got the game with a 40% discount for owning Mercenary, but I've seen enough of a difference to justify it for me. Hell this latest game runs better, with a higher frame rate for me than Mercenary ever did, as well as looking much better. THAT to me is worth it alone.
TL;DR: I like this game when in theory I shouldn't, but I understand why others don't. To each his/her own right?
this look awesome
Evochron is misspelled in the description. Just thought I'd let you know.
Scott, which is `better`overal, ED or this? I have ED, love it, but sometimes miss certain things
A new one is out? I should just go ahead and watch the video.
There's so much in the HUD
Bought this just because I got bored with ED. Holy crap this is THE game I wanted ED to be! Well, to be honest I bought this and Mercenary just because I decided the guy that made this deserves my money. I'm sure I won't have time to play it a lot, but boy is this great fun!
Awesome game! I just wonder how to find any kind of multiplayer aspect? I've connected to some of the "Public servers" and even seen some messages along the lines of "Player XXX entered station" or something like that. I tried typing stuff into the chat but noone replied. It feels very lonely, in fact I had no idea if there was anyone else on the server.
Yay for Steve the pilot :)
In EM, shunting power to weapons systems would decrease the cooldown for jumping.
Looks like the game for me, downloading after I type this.
Evochron: TL;DR
hey scott you should check out Aurora 4X, an incredibly detalied and supernerdy 4x style game (also avaiable for free). The game mantra is "if you think it there's a button for it".
Hey that first space station model is from beyond protocol
+Urillch “HS” Penza it's probably bought from an asset store. all the spaceships in evochron used to be bought models too, but he (vice) hired a modeller for this latest one. so those at least should be original to this game now.
I played X3 a lot. My favorite feature was being able to capture ships. Can you do that in this game?
Also, I have Evochron mercenary but I was turned off by the visually cluttered interface. The author seems to have an obsession with borders around button, windows, everything, to the point where the borders are more visible than the buttons themselves.
I used to play a similar game 13-14 years ago lol
i bought and played it today.... in the training everything worked great..... in the actual game i leave the station i cannot slowdown or speed up unless using boost to speed up slowing down for get it.... wether using the numbers and back space or the wheel
One question, How many ships are in the game (ships I can pilot that is)?
Fantastic Game
OH MY GOD THEY ARE MAKING ANOTHER!???
I can hear in your voice that you love this :) Why not try Osiris: New Dawn? It's not a simulator like this, but I love it even though it just got out, it already has some depth from other survival/crafting games and you can build a spaceship and go to planet #2 of 9 promised :)
Beautiful game! Shame you forgot how to grab items like that medical supply heheh.
great vid Scott, love all your videos. but do got a question? how come you didn't go 3d person and be one the outside of the ship? anyways, LYLT! ~Rastaoneeye~
+fram smith I managed to forget what key was 3rd person view and didn't want to go into menus to remind myself.
I've got to give props to this guy for doing this all on his own, but I reckon he could really do with someone helping him with the UI--it's just far too complex and difficult to read, IMHO.
Evechron looks amazing when played using the Oculus. Unlike Elite which doesn't even support the latest DK2 runtime module!
If the graphic would be more detailed with more effects - it could smash nowadays spacesims. :3
A box of beer for StarWraith.
I wonder if he'd like to work for Robert Space Industries
He wouldn't fit in there as he actually finishes things.
16:12 so disappointed you weren't able to get the box
The game as it got a full release,And as got any bug's? is it worth a buy?
Thanks for the video, and being chill about hosting style *subscribed
aurora 4 x is also quite good
Just like the old X3, you may crash into something, space is a dangerous place.
Been playing StarWraith games since the first evochron. SO glad hes doing this.
Reminds me of Tachyon: The Fringe!
wow beautiful game :D
i just got this game i love it, but can you get out the ship? steve is the most appropriate name i agree!
I would say half of videogame players are sci-if freaks, there was no reason for this genre to disappear. The same with horror genre. Games like Soma and Layers of fear (this last one is absolutely terrifying) are so welcome.
@24:15 - C'mon Scott! That's what you get for rubber necking!
I recommend that all who were interested in this game to google Dual Universe. Similar concept, but very early in the development.
Wish he could have made a voice over instendig of all the txt. Really not hard to Get that done
WOW , I never though you will play this game, awesome! ... if you want I can also recommend you check out starshatter the gathering storm.
+Lord Zephyros ugh loved and hated that game. the bugs killed it for me.
KaidenOZ
lol thats true but the good stuff its really good ... and its open source so you can get it for FREE ;) .... ( www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=9b5805b513bebd5ddeb628b8d82033d6&topic=80935.0 )
Can we actually land on the planet? That guy was about to do that!
23:57 "Scott? ... Scott!? ... SCOTT!?!"
