  • The Georgetown Loop Railroad in Colorado, USA is a 4.5 mile preserved section of the three foot gauge Colorado Central Railroad which connected Georgetown and Silver Plume to the greater US rail network. Originally built to service the Colorado gold rush, it remained open carrying passengers and freight until 1938 after which it was dismantled.
The present line including the wonderful Loop bridge was rebuilt and reopened in 1984.
Colorado & Southern Railroad 2-6-0 No. 9 was built by Cooke in 1884, as a passenger loco. It was used to haul the very last passenger train from Leadville to Denver in April 1937.
No. 9 then moved to New York to be used in the World's Fair of 1939 and then went on to work at the Chicago Railroad Fair in 1948-1949.
The loco eventually found its way to the Black Hills Central Railroad in South Dakota but was not operated and remained static exhibit until being purchased by the Colorado Historical Society in 1988.
It was returned to working order and operated for a short while on the Georgetown Loop Railroad but then stored out of use for several years. It has now been cosmetically restored and is displayed at the Rotary Snowplough Park in Breckenridge.
Rocky Mountain Steel Mills No.21 a 44-ton General Electric diesel/electric locomotive ably assists No.9on the uphill sections.

Number 9 always has been my favorite narrow gauge locomotive. It was with great hope I followed her "restoration" and then to see her in the middle of all the Georgetown Loop problems finally to be relegated back to static display. How sad for her and all of us narrow gauge fans!

What a shame that the Georgetown Loop restored her, only for her to never run again a few months later…depressing.

It’s a shame about number 9, the company responsible for its restoration really did a poor job, not entirely the loops fault. There were issues found that caused this locomotive to be put back into display. She will never turn a wheel under her own power again

Staybolts kept breaking continuously. Running gear almost worn out. Boiler surprisingly is ok. Firebox needs total replacement.

@@nicholasmedovich8691 that's interesting. Usually the boiler is the worst of all, with all the heat and pressure it has to endure. If the boiler is okay, then it's possible, though unlikely, that the engine could be restored. Do I want that to happen? Of course, I love this engine. Do I think it'll happen? No, probably not. Though, maybe one day in the future we'll be able to hear her gorgeous whistle once again echo through the mountains and valleys on the Loop.

@@nicholasmedovich8691 I would like to see Colorado & Southern #9 in service at a narrow gauge heritage railroad, if there’s enough money for it to be back in operation.

This is the only video I have seen on C&S 9 in operation on the Georgetown Loop. Wish I had been able to able to see her run in person. I have always like that locomotive. Its great footage. I'll be looking for more of your work.

Many thanks for your kind comments Herman, I'm so pleased you enjoyed my footage. Most of my videos are of the preserved railways of Britain but I have regularly filmed in the USA, Germany and China. I hope to upload more of my collection in the near future.

How fast was she going in that first shot?

She would need the “works” to be restored to operation condition. Ive heard she would need re boilering new tender body, new casting for her cylinders to rest on, and new tubes and flus. Correct me if I’m wrong.

    • @War1109
      @War1109 2 года назад

Well she would need new flues as apart of the 1472 anyway but they really messed her up in her year of running so badly that the wheels started to carve into the firebox so she will probably need firebox sheets replaced

Why not have the C&TS or D&SNG acquire C&S 9? She deserves another chance of spotlight to run again in the future!

C&S #9 requires more work to return to service than RGS #20 did. She basically needs a new boiler AND new frames.

It's so sad watching the Georgetown Loop basically slowly kill this engine. They were working it way too hard and didn't even restore it correctly. Rip C&S #9, it'll never run again

@Alan-NoCo that statement is wrong on so many levels, learn the facts about it.
