My father lied about his age in the late 40s to get a job working lookouts in the mountains of Washington. He was 17 his first year and worked alone for the whole summer on top of a mountain. He had a ton of stories of those years he would share with me on our backpacking trips in my youth. He passed a couple of years ago and I miss him dearly.

@@nthans Here is a quick one (and probably the most funny he ever shared). One of the summits he worked on had an outcropping which was a jumble of rocks at the edge of the mountain. The outhouse was placed on top of the rocks. On cold windy nights, you would have to time your "business" with the wind gusts that came up the valley and up the face of the mountain side. One particular night the wind was howling and my father had to go. While taking care of business, he heard a gust coming up the valley and before he could finish and get out, the gust came up through the rocks and up and out of the hole in the outhouse. My father said that "my jacket was blown up and over my head and the wind was COLD!" As he put it, "it was like sitting on the backside of a jet engine". As a kid, you can imagine the fit of laughter I had at that story.

Cooking tip: you should be throwing garlic in toward the VERY end.
It turns bitter when over cooked. So you want to get a crust on both sides of the meat, then throw in a big tab of butter, your garlic, your rosemary, then baste the steaks while you finish getting them up to temp

In 1977 I worked for the Forest Service in Oregon. We maintained the logging roads in the National Forest and our crew was often working on the exposed ridges of the Cascades. As the foreman, I had to make sure that we were not exposed to the dangers of lightning storms. The storms would start to build up at around 1300 hours and would move from south to north. As the fully developed thunderheads began to put out lightning, at about 1630-1700 hours, the fire lookouts would send radio messages to the Ranger District headquarters dispatchers. I would hear each lookout as they reported that they were going off the air for a storm in their vicinity and would start moving my crew down the mountain when the lookout 20 miles to the south of us went off the air. We tried to be well down the mountain before the storm reached us. Several times we found trees that had been destroyed by lightning and slabs of wood 30-40 feet long and a foot or two wide by a foot thick were scattered across the road. That was the incentive to be away from the ridge tops when a storm came up the line of the mountains.

Hi, I live in sweden and love nature❤ always been hiking in deep woods and mountains.
To be part of the nature is to enter another part of our selfe, I belive.
Another way to cook a wonderful stake is to put the stake in a plasticbag, throw in some rosemary, time, fresh garlic, salt ,pepper (pepper with lemonflawor is also greate)
Put in lots of honey, sweet chili sause, and some dark vinegar.
Close the bag and tos it around a bit, so everything blends together.
You can do this at home, the bag needs to be in a frige or coler.
When you arive at you camp-destination the meat is jucy and have lots of flawor😊
The stake can be in the bag for several hours.
When you Cook the stake, you can use the wet ingrediense that are left and you got a delicious gravy😋
Love your video, next time you got that lovely view and there are a thunderstorm coming, put the camera so we can see the lightning . Its facsinating to se.
Best of luck on your youtube-journey👍😊 Li from sweden

Great video! My mentor always told me why something happened with food if something turned out not as expected. In the case of your mushy sweet potatoes there are a couple things that can cause them to get mushy. 1. The temperature was too low, causing them to steam instead of frying or sautéing. 2. There was too much liquid introduced. Sweet potatoes release moisture of their own and when combined with too much liquid they will steam as well. 3. You overcooked them, which will also cause them to turn mushy. This usually happens when the cut size is small. I like mushy sweet potatoes. They absorb flavors really well. That is why you often see mashed (sweet) potatoes on the side ;)

From sunrise to sunset and then starlight can only be experienced because words fail to describe the beauty. In his youth, my grandpa was a lookout and smoke jumper in the Bob Marshall. In fact, he took my grandma to his station for a rotation as a honeymoon.
I was fortunate enough to have packed in with him on horseback to spend a week at the site of his tower. The Bob is some of the most untouched wilderness in the contiguous states. I had a lot of great memories with him that informed my outlook and what I would hold dear later in life, but that week changed me.
I learned the catharsis of silence, the spiritual value of "touching grass," and that can't nobody tell me that some great horned owl calls come across very, very sasquatchy. Like, "f*** this, I'm going to bed so I can die in my sleep" sasquatchy.

Enjoyed every second . Nothing is more rewarding than the solitude of the great beauty and wilderness of our country. I was blessed to spend Thirty seven days in the West Elk Wilderness in Colorado back in 79 with a horse and mule and didnt have a single contact with a human, it was the best experience of my life aside from marrying my wife. We find our sanctuary now in the Bitteroots. From a new Subscriber, thanks.

Thanks for joining this upload! I lived in Missoula for 2.5 years so I am familiar with the Bitterroots. An amazing area to reside that's for sure!

Oh man, they’d have to call in a SWAT team to get me out of there. I can’t even imagine the peace and quiet of a place like that. I’d wear my Kindle Paperwhite out pretty quick. Great video!

Food looking good, suggestion: pour the beef juices on the sweet potato and beans for extra flavor. It works like a perfect sauce. If you are not in a rush and cooking little slower, you can add some water on the pan, will make the meat more tender.
