Tax write offs are only usefull if it's something you would have had to buy anyway. So he only made money if this stream earnd him more than what he "invested" by loosing on the opening. If you make a million and you spend 100k to gain 5k you will have to pay tax on 905k. So you've written off the 95k you lost. But you still would have more money if you didn't make the bad investment of turning 100k into 5k. Write offs only make sense if it's for things you needed anway or if you can write off more on paper than it actually lost in value in reality.
