Scott, as a master carpenter and retired project manager, I was so chuckled with regards to round and square pegs on your video.
Here in the UK and my native country, Ireland, square pegs are a MUST when you are pouring concrete foundations/slabs, setting levels and above ground profiles for setting out wall and columns.
As a veteran construction man for 52 years, I love your videos, very informative and educational.
I suppose our whole working life, is an apprenticeship.

When I was starting out in the trades working for a general contractor/mason contractor we did the occasional concrete pour. Usually it was footings, sometimes a small slab. Our stakes were always wood. Sometimes 2x2 or 2x4, more often 1x4 or 5/4x4 or what ever scrap was laying around the yard but always wood. When my wife and I bought our first house, I eventually found a pair of round stakes that the previous owners had left. If I used them more than once, the second time was to play horseshoes.

A couple of years ago, one of my neighbors was complaining about his round stakes, so I told him about your square concrete stakes video, and he has been sold on them ever since, and we went to our local steel supplier and bought 50 feet of 1/2": steel bar and made him a bunch of square steel stakes.

One time use, maybe 2 but they worked for the footer I was doing. I love made in the USA too. I can't wait to spend some money with those guys. I'm from Connecticut. I saw your original video about the stakes pretty much when it was posted, and I was sold then. I went searching for them and was only able to find them from Hogan. The shipping to Connecticut cost about as much as the stakes themselves. But I love them. I'm seeing this video now, and feel validated in buying them from Hogan, as at the time I was sure there had to be a closer source, but got tired of looking.

If you're in Australia I am making these from scratch and selling them, as there is no where to buy them here, and after seeing ECs video I knew these are the pegs I need for my concreting business. Forge hammered points, holes to fit screws not just nails, also epoxy coating them custom colors on request. Going by their website prices mine would be fairly close in price to the hogan pegs, accounting for freight.

Square stakes are just square stock with a couple of features.
    Very easy to make.
Most steel suppliers will sell you a length of square stock to cut up.
If you want to get real fancy, you could buy a harder than mild steel, or you could harden whatever you buy a little.
Nice project for a beginner for little outlay.

In south central Alaska the ground is highly composed of oversized rock. +3 inch. Many of my proctors are 80 to 90% oversized. As you drive your concrete stakes into the ground they twist. As I tried to use square and rectangular stakes I found most of the time the twisted in such a way that there was no nail hole lining up with a form. It’s all about where you are as to what works best.

couple more features of square stakes. 1) When you step on them on concrete you don't fall on your head. 2) You throw them in your trailer to one side, and when you get home they are still on that side. 3) you put a pile on a table or bench and they don't roll off.

Interesting topic. I see the need for square stakes, but the reality is you will be measuring from where strings cross rather than the stakes themselves, most of the time. I suppose you could drop a square stake over a rebar for a rough distance... OR... measure from the head, which may or may not be straight if round or square. (may not be plumb) If the stake is holding concrete forms, then you will measure from the 2x wood anyway, not the stake.

Just gotta get concrete builders supply (local) to carry them

They are totally not available in the UK. I purchased some 10mm bar and made my own, 900mm, 1200mm and even 4 at 1600mm. Carry them in my van and they become more useful the more you use them. Only problem here is that it's mighty difficult to buy duplex nails

If you were to have a choice to purchase one square hogan stake what size and length would you recommend?

With over 1.2 million subs I'm thinking hogan's might be getting at least a few orders.

Hi pipefitter here measure the edges of the round object and not the centers.
