      I've been seeing a lot of concerning hate on the levoit lately due to their apparent false claims of pure hepa tech not being true hepa filtration. Which I hope isn't true as I bought two last year from levoit. I have notice air improvements. But not sure if it's much better then when I had my box fan with filter.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@hairpunut From what I have read it does appear to be true.
      Even so, the fact that it isn't HEPA doesn't mean it isn't effective. In our tests, it still performed as well as any HEPA filter we tested.
      This isn't to say what Levoit did wasn't wrong...it absolutely was. Lying to consumers about the facts of the product is a terrible breach of trust.
      Nevertheless, in terms of strict performance, the Levoit purifiers are still solid units that effectively purified the air during our tests.

      VOCs are really tough to measure. We just don't have the necessary equipment to get reliable readings.
      That said, if VOCs are critical I would recommend something oversized for the space + with the largest carbon filter possible. It's the carbon that's removing VOCs, not HEPA. To that end, the IQAir MultiGas would be the best choice, in my view. See here - www.amazon.com/IQAir-MultiGas-Purifier-Medical-Grade-HyperHEPA/dp/B00069EGA0/ref=sr_1_2?tag=mc_1001-20

    I got the Winix 5500-2 and after the first day my sleep improved significantly and my allergies are non-existent at night. I now have one in my in home office and sleep area and the life improvement is significant for allergies. The sensor isn't all that great for pollen detection so I just leave it on 2 all day and when I go to bed I'll set it to night mode. In the morning I'll set it to two again before I get out of bed and sometimes to 3 before going to bed because pollen is worst in the morning and late afternoon.

    Cool data. I noticed the PM2.5 and PM10 after an hour tended increase on the smaller models. Is this just due to the testing room being a constant size? Is there a 'time to PM2.5 of 0.1' metric? I'm wondering if the larger units are just over performing for the testing room size and whether the smaller units will eventually get there?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  2 месяца назад +1

      We don't have a "time to PM2.5 of 0.1 metric", but that's an interesting idea for future testing.
      In theory, many air purifiers could achieve a a PM2.5 of 0.1...provided it's a HEPA filter and provided the room is perfectly sealed.
      The problem is, rooms and homes aren't perfectly sealed. There is a constant stream of new particulates entering your home via doors, windows, attics, basements, cooking, pets, people living, etc. So having a higher performance unit with more airflow allows you to overcome the influx of new particulates.

    To all those considering air purifiers remember that the number one air purifier is your central hvac system. Adding carbon infused or hepa filters do your central hvac system drastically inproves the air quality in youe home.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Месяц назад +1

      If your HVAC is powerful enough then absolutely, using carbon / HEPA filters at the HVAC intake is a great way to improve air quality.
      However, those types of filters, which are substantially thicker than more typical HVAC filters, put undue stress on your HVAC. They can cause the HVAC to work harder, use more energy, and not last as long.
      You should always consult a local HVAC tech / company and/or reach out to your HVAC manufacturer to determine if and what types of filters are appropriate for your HVAC.

I’m primarily looking for a unit that can handle a 4,000 Sq Ft home, Can tackle dust, pet hair, and basement mold. If the Oransi Mod+ or the Shark NeverChange can handle these requirements, great. Otherwise, is there another unit you would recommend for my specifications? Thank you again!

      @@Viva0331 Neither of those units can handle 4,000 sq. ft. You'd want at least 3 units to handle that space.

      @@ModernCastle Thank you for the reply! So, having the Shark NeverChange air purifier for a few days now I realize I like having the auto feature, and number display indicating how clean the air is. I know the Mod+ doesn’t have auto mode but can you tell me if it has a number display? I am now trying to decide between the Oransi Mod+ and the, Medify Air MA-125. Seems like the MA-125 has the display features I’m looking for, and greater coverage, but costs a bit more and seems like it needs more frequent filter replacements. Could you tell me which one you’d recommended out of these two? Thank you again!

      Our more recent tests make a point to having a more consistent starting point for particulates. Though you're right, some of our older tests had more varied starting levels.
      In any case, the reason we do a 1 hour test time is because almost any reasonably good air purifier can reduce even a very high particulate count to near zero within 15 minutes.
      This provides ample extra air cleaning time to account for any inconsistencies in starting particulate levels.

      Exactly. This is a very old model. We have issues with two family members' health (asthma, autoimmune illness, allergies), have pets, one smoker (!), forest fire air AND year-round terrible air quality. We use BlueAir, various sizes. We based our choice on tests that were done in Canada. They work extremely well. The models of the past several years have had wifi and (basic) meters. While we don't care too much about the wifi (We still use a couple of the older models.), the meters are very useful. The quality is excellent, as is the customer service (though, unfortunately, it was [partially?] bought from the Swedes by Americans recently, which raises quality and pricing concerns). The auto detection on some of these high end air purifiers is very sad . I bought the Dyson BP04 flagship earlier this year , all though they did not have any CFM, CDAR, or any of that information , just bare minimum information and I calculated it cleaned 180 cubic feet per minute, which for a $1200 air purifier was pretty bad compared to others. . I just got 2 BlueAir 211i Max on Prime day sale since I seen they had a high CDAR & CFM of 410 . But the air purifier only recognized PM particles , even when I tested spraying air freshener in the room which the Dyson would have labeled a VOC and is a VOC. Plus iv found that both the Dyson BP04 and now the BlueAir or any purifier the sensor is always very small and on the back of the device , I honestly got these air purifiers for my PM vape smoke and the VOC when cooking . As much as I hated the Dyson BP04 i think it’s price $1200 just did not sit with me well, but the product sensor and functions are well designed. Will test these BlueAir 211i max for a few weeks and see if ima keep them or not.

    Do any of the usual-suspects of popular models ( airmega 400 , medify ma-112 , nuwave oxypure , Shark 3-in-1 max / NeverChange etc) have a filter replacement indicator that is based the actual state of the filter, not just the time it's been on? If I understand correctly, Dyson did not score at the top in any category? @moderncastle

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  8 месяцев назад +1

      Dyson was on par with many of the models in this video in terms of performance.
      However, they are significantly more expensive at every coverage level.
      It just makes more sense to buy from other brands that have the same performance / features / quality, but are significantly less expensive than Dyson.

    Hold on here. Why does the baseline air quality change? Doesn't that make the specifications sort of meaningless?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  7 месяцев назад

      In an ideal world we'd have perfect control over baseline air quality. And while we have gained more control over the years, we still test in a home-type environment to create more of a real world use case.
      As a result, there is some variance in the baseline.
      That said, we conduct our tests with an exceedingly generous amount of time for the unit to purify what is a fairly small space. As a result, any variance that exists at the baseline has more than enough time to be a non-factor by the conclusion of the 1 hour test.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  10 месяцев назад +2

      Almost all of them are nothing more than marketing nonsense.
      There is no legally defined term for "surgical" or "medical-grade" when it comes to air purifiers.
      They still may be good air purifiers, but I don't read into any of those marketing terms.
