creep could be the best thing to happen to them. getting a hit instantly they were able, and forced, to focus on making solid works and writing loads of great songs, not looking for making it but rather getting away from it, a much better creative approach. see the results
The problem with Creep is that its popularity became a double edged sword. People were going to Radiohead shows to only hear Creep- then leaving afterwards. If the band hadnt survived and rebounded the way they did with The Bends and OK Computer, they would've become a one-hit wonder.
CarSeat Headrest has that potential. Bands don’t get supported anymore; the industry gives all its time quite literally *grooming* young individuals for pop stardom like Disney did with its TV kids. A monstrous gatekept corporate formula with fragile egos, data and shareholders who would never yield to the personalities and artistry of bands, singer/songwriters, or even pop pioneers. The rise of the managerial class, data, trite nostalgia, and looping congealing dehydrated bland ignorance. Can you imagine puffed up executives and producers putting up with musicians, techs, writers, and artistic directors who came up from streets, trailers, bungalows, suburban pre-fabs, apartments and garages, making music that tells the current institutions of power they’re the problem with everything? Someone would call the manager. So now they just book their friends’ perfectly beautiful wealthy kids. Who’ve been afforded the exorbitantly costly tools, instruments, copyrights, and software, who’ve learned at university how to copy art, and are able to intern for free. . Because it costs too much now to survive to leave any time or pennies left to pursue your gifts organically, and it wouldn’t matter anyway because there aren’t any clubs or platforms for youth to express themselves, absent of invasive and constant institutional observation.

So weird. In my head this is still what they look like. Poor Thommy, he really is one of the few truly good-hearted people out there.
When the guy said “hook up with the band” at 0:29, I really regret taking that expression to always mean just meeting up and talking. I’ve embarrassed myself so many times asking people to hook up with me smh
Maybe these guys can transcend Creep, but their 3rd album would have to be really fucking special. I'm talking about an album that will top best albums of all time lists a year after it comes out. An album that people will still be talking about decades from now. Can the band that wrote Creep do that?
ol Toby! That actually brings on more nostalgia than seeing young Radiohead. (Probably because I've continued to watch Radiohead things for the past 20 years, but haven't seen his little mug in quite some time.
