The p400 was in ww2 it was used at the battle of pearl harbor but only a few p400 type planes were up in the air because Japanese bombers bombed the airfields early and the pilots and others did not know about the attack because the Japanese bombers were flying at low altitude to stay out of the radar's range
I think you need to attack at a higher altitude when you initially spot a bogey so you can dive bomb using your built up momentum to perform an arial flank and I don't actually know what I am talking about
The tactic you used, or explained, is still BnZ (Boom and Zoom). But you just mean that BnZing is better at a higher altitude, which is correct. That's why in a P-400 (or American Aircraft, if the climb rate ain't great), *Side Climb.* Basically, you need to head away from the battle and climb. But of course, your whole team may just be decimated. So you have to decide. I preferably Side Climb when flying higher tier, as the pilots are more competent, but lower tier? It depends. The P-400 is very fast (450km/h at the deck), so I don't usually side climb. But around tier III (like P-47D-28) I start to side climb. It's stupid not to. But Tier II I guess it's still fine to not side climb, it's still kinda forgiving.
Niccaman, consider using flaps (F button) to your advantage. 7 minutes into the video, you're in attempt to turn and maneuver that would've been made easier with Flaps set to Combat. F sort of automatically chooses/toggles a setting for you, while the bracket buttons ] and [ let you cycle through all settings sequentially. You generally raise flaps (disable them) when you need high speed and low drag, and enable them when you need to maneuver or if you're at low speed and need lift (landing, takeoff, turning).
combat flaps are very bad in this plane ! you usually keep pressed WEP and always are around 300-400 km/h. but flaps rips at 420 km/h. even the wiki of war thunder advises never to turn, better extending and avoiding dogfighting. but usually yes you are completely right, flaps are very important
Hold O-key in a match to see the inside of your vehicle. With certain guns and suitable convergence, players can get kills at ranges of more than 1 mile (notably 50 cals at "No" convergence). Be alert whenever you're within a bit more than half a mile or so of enemies - they may be spraying stealth ammo. About vehicle eras, WT has continually worked toward modern vehicles - right now the developers are so tunnel-visioned on adding more vehicles that they leave many bugs and problems untouched

@@CMDR_Osas i play it the same way as the P400 tbh, just get to 3000 meters no more than that (the P39s and P400s are low alt fighters and lose a lot of engine power at higher altittudes), charge straight into the enemy planes, and just energy fight your way out of there in a p400, in a p39 you can do either that or outturn them as you are fucking awesome at turning in the P39 compared to the 109s, and everything else, well you are much faster than other planes! Alternatively, and by me preffered, i go off to the side, around 7km away from ground targets, equipped with the M8 rockets, when i am side on 7k away from ground targets i head straight to the ground targets, use up my rockets and my 37mm ammo if there are tanks as I don't shoot the 37 at fighters unless i am really really close, and then start dogfighting.
You played it right. That's one of my favorite planes and that br. I flew that plane alot in my early war thunder days. It's a great plane to practice boom and zoom to prepare for the upcoming plethora of boom zoomers ahead in that county. And yes that is a low to mid altitude fighter because control stiffness is an issue in high speed dives.

For a first timer you’re actually really good. One thing, flaps can help you turn, but you have to be careful. Too fast, they rip off and too slow they make you hard to control.
You should definitely always zoom in while shooting. (RMB by default) Also I’d love to see you fly the P-39, the A-20 or the B-25. The latter two are great fun since they’re both bombers with primary armaments.
If an enemy attacks you from the back, turn left at a 45 degree angle then turn right as much as possible, then start firing, you should use Tracer bulllets.the P-400 is pretty fast so you might outrun the enemy. I used this move before and destroyed the enemy in 2 seconds
A little tip. When diving from high up,try to shut off your engine throttle. It'll help you from overspeeding or compressing and the sound of your engine will be minimized,which means enemies can't hear you diving on them.
Nicca You gotta try the other rear engine planes p-39 and p-63 with the 37mm nose gun and show side climbing isn't the only option for the Americans PS the p-400, p-39, and p-63 all turn into bricks above 4km due to not having turbo chargers
Best strat is diving and mimicking the bogey’s movements and when it starts to go up or down strafe it and it’ll go up into flames after that just leave it for a few seconds and it’ll lose it wings and fall towards the earth for an easy kill
Just starting in WT and at first i thought i was the one who was making the p-400 do slow manuevers, the i lookes it up and it was naturaly bad at turning. And i tried fighting a bf-109 with it, Almost raged quit.
Optimal climb is based off indicated airspeed, or IAS. At low altitudes that might be ~20 degrees, but as you climb you will have to gradually lower your nose to maintain that indicated airspeed.
You're already doing really well. I think playing with people like PhlyDaily has really helped out, I can already see you being very calculating with your flying, such as going for a high yo-yo when turning with an enemy that is slower than you. however, a word of advice for when attacking larger two to four engined aircraft, aim for the wings, you'll end up taking them down faster.
P-400 is the export version of the Bell P-39 Air Cobra. Powerful Allison V-12 engine but no turbocharger for high altitude performance. Army Airforce brass envisioned them performing ground attack against Japanese landing craft invading American soil. P-400 variant has a reliable 20mm cannon as opposed to the so so 37mm cannon on the P-39. High wing loading means it doesn't turn so well but has good energy retention and was one of the fastest fighters of its time. Never exceed speed: 525 mph (845 kph)!
if you want to turn faster, use the F key for flaps, just make sure to press F again when you climb or straighten up to build up speed, there is 3 settings for flaps, press G wait for gears to drop, then F will give you landing flaps, another is just flaps and another is extended flaps, all do different things, play around with the flaps in the test flight to know what each planes capability is with height and speed. have fun, it may get you out of trouble ;-)
from what I know the P-400 works better towards the ground but will work higher up. its really up to whichever the user is more (comfortable) (must of spelled that wrong) with. and do make this a series, you should get alot of attention as war thunder is moving past supersonic jets now.
Whether or not your plane is considered a "boom and zoom" fighter depends on what you're facing. For example, a P-40 facing a Zero should definitely stick to BnZ. However, a P-40 facing a FW 190 can bait the 190 into a turning fight. Air combat is extremely dynamic and complex, but as a GENERAL rule, If you are in a faster but less maneuverable than your opponent you should BnZ them and never give up your E-advantage. If you bleed your energy to the point where you cannot BnZ them anymore, or if you start off at a lower altitude than your opponent, then just run/dive away and "drag n bag" for your teammates. Usually the faster plane also has better dive acceleration and top speed in a dive.
The p-400 is simply put as a p-39 with a 20 mm cannon insted of a 37 mm. The p-400 is honestly easier to use because the 20 mm has more ammo, and fires faster so you have more chances. The p-39 is meant to take out bombers however it cant fly high enough to attack them.
Nic i'm so glad you're enjoying war thunder! Try the A36 Apache if you liked the p400, it's very similar to this plane but with airbrakes and possibility to carry a payload (which i wouldn't recommend in Air RB). Super super fun plane, and an early prototype of the p51 Mustang ;)
Tip: Bind low and high caliber guns to different mouse buttons to conserve your heavy caliber ammo until you get the kill shot Also use flaps to turn faster.

Well the p-400 is a nice plane Nicca as your turning use your landing flaps and that will help you turn much sharper and get inside those easy zones lol. Thats how i use the 400 low alt energy fighter with the use of flaps its really good! You need to select "Hold Key to WEP" in controls options in UI , as you are overheating all the time / the P400 mid engined fighter was known IRL for it and in game it suffers the same consequence @Niccaman
Probably the reason you didn't kill that il2 is because it can take a lot of shots to take it down or when you were shooting it you were bad with your shots

yeah, most Americans are BnZ fighters, and the p-400 is a low alt fighter. Of you like BnZ, give the fw190 series try. Amazing roll rate but terrible horizontal maneuverability. I'd recommend the Fw 190a4. Really lead those mg151's and Mg FF's.
The tactic is pretty decent vs russians, as there planes dont really do well at alt, so they stay low. But vs germans for example, you want to side climb for a bit and join the battle a bit later
I play customs with a friend and I have shot him down he was flying a f-5c I was flying the p-400 it’s amazing I also have flown it with half my wing on both sides
@@bericv4219 True, German air teams are rarely bad. Instead the US teams are always the ones filled with players who don't keep to the discipline of their specific aircrafts.
@@darren.s3404 its not only that though. My theory on the low skills of allied teams is the diversity of the aircraft you can find enemies at all alt while in german teams most are comparable in performance thus allow swarms and better teamwork.

Actually, the momentum from a dive allows you to mimic a pelican and it really helps spread the good word of your channel

If you upgrade your pilot by right clicking on the plane in hanger, you can upgrade the g-tolerance and vitality to sustain more pilot damage
Max Cochran Also stamina so your pilot doesn’t get fatigued as quickly (the longer you play the fewer Gs he can take)
Also Russian pilots get a bit of stalinium so makes them resistant to 8 shots from the 88mm cannon

The P40, P400 and F2A are some of the best lower-tier American Planes. I’ve had a lot of fun with them
P-36 is certainly close to that level, despite it's poor stability at high speeds.

I climb at 20° pitch, try it out it optimizes the fighters climb rate. (Press change view button to toggle HUD view)

Was originally a high altitude bomber intercepter then into ground attack because of the Canon in the nose works great against tanks

I made my brother player this game he is a pilot in the RAF he said you did a good job of teaching people

Try the p51 its a low tier monster
The P 63 C you will enjoy if you like the P400 (tier 3 bright yellow one in tech tree )

That looks more like a an air cobra. The prop shaft actually ran through the legs of the pilot under a box.

While your climbing altitude, go in circles pitched upward instead of going straight up. You climb faster. Even in BFv

When you engage a bomber focus the shooting on wings and engines
I prefer using armour piercing for the heavy mg and canon to really destroy engines and pilots!

The tactic is pretty decent vs russians, as there planes dont really do well at alt, so they stay low. But vs germans for example, you want to side climb for a bit and join the battle a bit later

@@bericv4219 the early versions yes, but to me the g2-k4 versions are well matched against allied fighters.
@@darren.s3404 k4 versions yes on balanced but the g2 clubs at its b.r unless you have bad luck you will rarely lose as the germans.
@@bericv4219 True, German air teams are rarely bad. Instead the US teams are always the ones filled with players who don't keep to the discipline of their specific aircrafts.
@@darren.s3404 its not only that though. My theory on the low skills of allied teams is the diversity of the aircraft you can find enemies at all alt while in german teams most are comparable in performance thus allow swarms and better teamwork.
