- In this video I take three extreme ND filters out, to test their use at both the coast and in the urban environment. 6 stop, 10 stop and 15 stop neutral density filters all with their own advantage with particular subjects.

You make this look so easy. I have been to Salford Quays so many times and I can never get so many good compositions. You truly are a master Craig
You make it look so easy Craig, i'm forever chasing the little timings card when the wind blows it, so i taped it to the inside now. great video as ever.
The usual blend of humour, aesthetics and instruction. Great.
Chris Horner But not necessarily in that order! Thanks Chris
Perfect followup for the first installment on ND filters I watched. I agree with Sean from Ireland, the vids are worth the price of admission. Thanks.
Craig, your photos are stunning!Wow!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and tips with us. Love your videos! Thanks!
Cheers from Portugal.
i find your content so entertaining and as a fellow landscape photographer its nice to see something different from the norm of a sunset landscape photo (which i still love doing) but just seeing something a bit fresh helps me think more !
Josh Maguire Creative It would be very rare to see me do a sunset. I like more of a challenge.
Love the profile of the Antony statue. Deliberate? Funny!
I always learn something from your videos man - Sending love from Ireland - Sean
Beautiful images. Opened a new world of visual possibilities on gray days. Thanks!
Your vlogs are just great, Craig. I've been bingeing on them recently and learned a lot. Love to see you at work and build up teachable moments and practical examples. I shoot Olympus as well and like to see you on the job. Thanks for the inspiration.
I don't understand why those 14 people didn't like the video. I have learned interesting places to see and got inspiration too along the video. Thanks a lot e6 !
Very interesting video as I've only used the big stopper however just purchased the little stopper so it was good to see the differences thks for the video enjoy your videos each week
I love your work. I really like those of the old boats. Brilliant stuff.
Thank you for sharing your work. I've watched quite a few episodes (some more than once) and I especially appreciate the inclusion of your exif data.
Great images. Fun to watch
Your vids are so easy to watch and enlightening ... thank you for another brilliant one.
thanks Craig, enjoying your videos and humour. I am wading through all your blogs now and finding them so informative. Didnt think to use LiveTime. Will try that next. cheers Gill West Australia.
fantastic photos and fantastic video !!! Thanks
Craig, you make everyday scenes look great. Very inspiring, keep it up
Great simplicity and explanations of how to....really good thank you
I like your sense of humor, oh beautiful work as well
Excellent as usual, Craig. Thank you.
Comment that i learn a lot in composition with you, wish you the best and happiness for 2019 greetings from Lleida Spain
Really enjoyed this one Craig, many thanks for sharing.
Still love this vlog. Always inspires me to get down to the Quays. Heading there now
I froze while eating popcorn as soon as I saw the smashed filter!!!
Damn good images you got though.
The advantage of resin filters is that they rarely break when dropped and if they do
they only cost a little to replace.
Super video and shots Craig. I've just got s Seven5 system with a Big Stopper and 0.6 hard grad, can't wait to get out and see what I can create!
Great images :)
I am pleased that I found your channel! Looking forward to trying your many helpful tips! Thank you for the great videos!
Gorgeous. As always.
Modern Artist Cheers
great vlog Craig. What white balance settings do you use and software do you use for noise reduction. I always seem to get excessive noise on long exposures with the EM1
Great shots . Knowing how you felt with the broken filter, broke two lee grads, turned to get a fresh battery out of the bag. Gust of wind and over went the tripod
This just popped up on my homepage! Love your videos! I'm a student at the University of Salford (I study at Media city) and I'm getting more into long exposures, so your videos are a great help!
Sorry for the glass, that hurt me too to see it,great work real pro result, subscribed.
First time on your channel - love your B&W work hopefully see some more. Thanks for posting.
Another great video, Craig, love the super stopper shots, wasn't even aware there was a super stopper for the Lee Seven5 system. Also like the music tracks, too, great easy listening stuff.
great video, many uses of the ND filters.....can't wait until I get my good quality filters. Also I liked the video as it was enjoyable to see new places, sure looks cold.
loving the video !
Ah i grew up in Crosby, awesome to see it in one of your vlogs!
Very good. Can't wait to try mine again, thank you.
Really great and diverse video! Awesome images too :-) Thank you
Fantastic! You had me for the whole video. My heart broke a little with that Big Stopper. I will likely lose my cool for minute if that happens to mine 😳. You handled it very well. Thanks for a fantastic video
Morgan Nowland Thankyou. I just wish i hadn't been standing on the rocks when it fell. Would probably hav landed softly on the sand!
You are awesome. Love your approach. Very helpful. Thank you.
6:55 i use old CDs or DVDs placed under the tripod feet, very cheap solution for tripod sinking ;)
Wow! Great to see you in New Brighton. Perch Rock is just down the road from me and a great place to photograph on a stormy day.
I should really invest in some ND grads. It's just a bit expensive to invest in. Is there any decent starter kits for mirrorless?
Ash Ohare A screw-in type ND may be cheaper and was how i first used these filters
Another great video Craig, ive recently switched over to Micro 4/3 and the lee holder has fell off at least 3 times in the last couple of months, i never had the problem with the full frame set up, will just have to be more careful. keep up the good work.
Love your vlogs Craig.
Philip Nixey Thankyou

great video....! and very informative
I keep returning to this video, Craig, its one of my favourites, great choice of music, too, you should be a DJ as a second job! ;)
Thanks Kenny. Of course, there are as many that would disagree, as agree with you on the second point, but you can't please everyone I suppose!
Beautiful work as well as, it like. Thank!
Very informative videos. Thank you for inspiration!
Great images .... thanks for uploading
Love your work, Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. Good video
Another great video! I've personally never smashed an ND filter, due to the fact that I'm a skin flint and only buy cheapo plastic ones!
Hey Craig, thanks for taking us along on your ND journey. I thoroughly enjoyed the ND shots. Great scenery, The Lee filter smashed 'Ouch' not fun at all. Im not as fortunate to own any Lee filters, only use polycarbonate lens you can get off Amazon so I can totally get just how expensive they are. Anyway I look forward to your other videos due course. Trev
Great filming give me more inspiration to few new sites, thanks
Great session👏👏👏👏
great video..useful thanks
Gorgeous,great video!!
really enjoyed this vlog, thanks
Great video 👍
a nice video I love the images and the tips that you gave us.Too bad about the smash of the filter
I did the same thing with a Solar Eclipse filter a week before the total eclipse here in August. I feel your pain.
Nice one, but I feel your pain with the Big Stopper. I once managed to drop my Nikon D800 on one. Camera survived, but obviously the filter was left in many pieces. One of those stomach-churning moments.
I joined the club this week, too and accidentally smashed a Lee Seven5 little stopper as it fell off the filter holder in which the spring clip had come apart. :(
Nice
nice video, very informative and educational , thanks
@16:25 I turned down the colour on my tv so that there was barely any colour left, just a feint hint on the bridge and the buoy and it looked fantastic!
That's a brilliant tutorial. I have a set of (very cheap) Cokin-P square filters. They give a very strong magenta tint to all the photos. Please advise a couple (or more) ways to deal with white balance during the preshoot and in postprocessing.
Thank you very much for your time.
1. Adjust white balance in post until the cast is removed. 2 Alternatively, convert to black and white instead
e6 Vlogs Thanks. I was afraid that you might scold a viewer for buying cheap stuff and not the real stuff. Apparently all filters alter the white balance...some more...some less.
Wouldn't dream of it. I started off with Cokin many years ago. I know how expensive these filters can be and yes, even the LEE filters need post adjustment to clear the colour cast they have. Not tried them myself, but I believe the Formatt Firecrest ones are more neutral. but again, not cheap. 90% of mine get converted to B&W, so it's never an issue.
This is something I do with all my ND and Polar filters.
1. Shoot RAW with camera WB set to Daylight
2. Set up a target that has a calibrated neutral density patch to it. I use the Colorchecker Passport, but a simple gray card in the scene will work well also.
3. Set up your base exposure without a filter, checking for proper exposure.
4. Take the money shot with you filter on, adjusting for the ND effect over base exposure.
5. Bring the money shot into Lightroom.
6. In the Develop module, choose the white balance selector (eye dropper) and click on the neutral gray object in the image. This will correct/neutralize the color balance.
7. Save this correction as a User Preset. Name it something like CND3 (Cokin ND 3 stop).
Now, whenever you use that filter, simply apply the preset to adjust out the cast. Stacking filters can something of a problem, so in that case I simply apply the preset for the most "offensive" filter and then manually make the final WB adjustment to taste. Good luck.
so as a landscape photographer , ND filters are a bit important . specially when we need to take photos that water is in our composition . am I correct ?
sorry for bad English .
Brilliant video, it seems a long time since I saw one from you and you've come back with a bang. One of your best and that is saying something as all your videos are excellent. I'd love to do the boats at Fleetwood but with film on a long exposure, however, may not be the best place to go with poor mobility. Do you approach from the Fleetwood side of the Wyre or the Knot End side? It must have been a long journey from Fleetwood to Crosby to New Brighton to Salford Quays, and all in one day. I would have been really brasses off with a capital 'P' if that had been my Big Stopper. I've seen so many people have accidents with filters on RUclips that I've started carrying mine in a separate bag and putting the bag below the camera, then if anything falls it falls on to something relatively soft. But it's easy to carry extra bags on a mobility scooter.
Thank you Mark. It's the Fleetwood side. Oh and don't tell anyone, as it's a big secret, but this wasn't all shot on one day!
Nice informative, thanks for sharing
An inspiration
You are the man!
Great video, some nice shots & shame about your fiter. I have gotten some new ideas for places to photograph from this video, thanks.
Just an idea if its of use. Use a Ladies hair band around the filter system. it will hold the filters to the lens if it ever gets loose again and also stop any extra light getting into the lens
ubol sueathet Nice idea. This was my fault though. I was being careless!
Awesome video, I used to think I was a landscape photographer but wow do I have a lot to learn!! I have aNikon D800 with a 24-70mm 2.8. What filter system would you recommend that would not break the bank? I have bought most of my equipment used. Thanks
Great video with some cracking shots! - Great photography! - On a side note I find the Lee Filter holder (100 mm in my case) very fragile and easy to come off - hopefully I don't brake it just as you have :(
Hi Craig, very good video. I'm wondering why you used both your primes and your zoom lenses in circumstances where the weight and wider aperture advantages of the primes are less important? My impression is that the 12-40mm and 40-150mm are about as sharp and flare-resistant as the primes when stopped down.
Thanks in advance.
I like the restrictions of primes and feel my photography benefits from that sometimes. Zooms are sometimes just easier to use when videoing as well. I like primes for street photography, but also prefer them when shooting landscapes when I have more time.
Thank you!
How did you meter between water, sky and other objects to get the right balance of exposure?
How to decide on value of shutter speed when doing long exposure? is it trial and error?
Great video. You keep tempting me to try out an Olympus, but now super dark ND filters? You must be getting commission from my bank manager! 😁
Will Ha! Yes we have set a loan for you. Very um...competitive rates!
Heartbreaker.
Hi, very interesting, as usual if I may say. Question from france : I've got both E-M1 and E-M5 Markii and I have a ND1000 and a CPL, which combination would you consider best for long exposure in a lake with birds type of environment ?
Great video Craig, really loved Crosby beach. Would you (or anyone that knows) mind telling me the best place to park . I may go visit soon. Many thanks..
The beach car park is off Hall Road West
@@e6Vlogs Many thanks I will have a google.
Super.
2:45 surprised the epl5 outdoes the much more expensive em1 for long exposures!
2 questions 1. when you taking a city scrape from a low position ,how do you see whats in focus with a fixedlcd screen.2 when you use 10stop filters can you shot longer then the time which is worked out
1. You buy a camera with a flip screen! (though i did used to use a set-up using a small make-up mirror that worked well!). 2 Yes, but if I get your meaning, the shot will be overexposed.
Hi, Always love your vids, Thanks for posting. Can I just ask....What lens do you use for your street photography and have you tried the 25mm f1.2 Oly lens? Thanks.
Mainly the 17mm for street Andy, but no I only have the 25mm f1.8
Great vid, where abouts is this please?
Fleetwood mash's north east coast
Great.
Good video Craig, shame about your filter, your images was great like them a lot ,cheers for sharing .
Just bought a lee super nd. Shouldn’t have been my first lee filter but hey go big or go home. Anyway it’s dark....very dark..so I took a photo of the sun
Thanks for the inspirational video Craig, been thinking of purchasing a filter adapter system for the Olympus M Zuiko 7-14 f/2.8 by Phil Norton and the Nisi 70mm filters! Do you use the 7-14 if so what system adapter do you use? Kind regards Graham
Graham Harding
Thanks Graham. No, i use the 9-18mm as i use the Seven5 system, but would love a replacement for this. And it may be coming from Panasonic this year.
Thank you ~
Where did you get your angle view finder
Great informative video, thanks. By the way how did the filter get broken?
I (unusually), carried the camera still attached to the tripod and knocked the fitler holder off the lens.
e6 Vlogs sorry to hear that. I have been looking at investing in the Lee filter system. Looks amazing. Great videos!
nice subject yea
Loved this location had not seen this before. When you said Fleetwood Marshes is this the Fleetwood near Blackpool ???
yes
Thank you Craig fabulous location.
too bloody far for me to come from West Australia......shame looks a great shoot
