you have been a great help in my reaching a higher octave, i'm registering a higher octave than before. I've been following your exercise for a week now.
Hey! Don't let that confuse you. They're just talking about breathing. See my video "Singing Lessons - Interactive Videos! (2 of 4)" which talks about that specifically.
I love the way he explains shit. Like it makes so much sense. I always tried singing high notes with my chest instead of my head and i always felt a strain. This is great!
At 49 years old I thought I had singing down, I've spent thousands on sing lessons only to get bits and pieces of what your singing program did for me. I found a new range and hitting notes that I cant believe with ease. By far the best money I've ever spent on singing lessons,THANK YOU SO MUCH
Mainly on the first exercise after the warm-up to ease you into your head voice, but anytime you want more resonance and a brighter sound, you can incorporate some of that 'front of the face' placement to achieve it.
As you consistently practice with targeted exercises, your range will naturally increase; especially so if you're managing the proper action of your vocal cords around your bridge points. However, if you develop the habit of forcing the high notes out with external musculature, you'll not only risk damaging your voice, but will also run into an abrupt limit of how high you can sing.
This lesson is like a Christmas present! I am finding your lessons are very productive and I like how you are using the "vocal fry" to get the notes started. I have really figured out that it is all in the vocal chords and not in neck tension. This is difficult to differetiate but the vocal fry is the way to get the correct feeling.
Galt, I love love love your lessons.. It is has been so perferct for my voice.. The problem I am having with my voice I think is still pitch.. I think I am improving.. but I cant stand to hear myself on cd sometimes because I am like so very critical of my sound , pitch. I dont want to be like a computerized fake pitch sound, yet i want to my pitch better than it is.
Mainly just practice, practice, practice. Also though, keep in mind that metal-style vocals ask you to put a lot of muscle behind your voice - but for 'clean' vocals, you want effortlessness. So really make sure you're not pushing too hard when you sing.
Oh my gosh.. I have searched high and low and here YOU are!! I just discovered you and did the interactive plus this lesson. Thanks a million, will get the tape and practice daily!!!!
i have been practicing with your videos for more than 6 months now and i tell you sir. its has been such a huugee part of my singing experience .. i hear my family friends used to tell me to just give up singing. but lately they have been telling me that my voice got waay more better and i sound really good now and i feel so happy thanks to you. :D
Thanks! And yes, that's precisely what you want to do. You'll develop bad habits if you force the notes out. Just work with the notes you can comfortably hit now while you develop solid technique, and the higher notes will come with time.
After your voice has changed, it can be a bit of a process learning to coordinate it all over again. It's not exactly like starting over, but you do need to practice a lot to explore your 'new' voice and get comfortable using it. Keep working at it and you'll be happy with your voice again soon :)
Each person's bridge points are different, but a tenor typically has a bridge point somewhere around F#. As for the second question, my singing lesson CDs will help to ensure that your vocal technique is solid. Check the link in the description if that sounds like what you're after.
Just wanted you to know, i have used alot of diffrent singing lessons and you are by far the best. been watching alot of your videos and noticed that i was doing alot of stuff wrong, i have learned more in these couple of hours then in the past year, so thank you very much ^^
Really great lesson, I've been trying to learn to sing high for weeks now. A few minutes on youtube singing lessons and I've progressed more than during all the time I tried myself. Proves that I shouldn't be so sceptic about these lessons :)
i've been singing only 2yrs,..i take lessons,..and truly consious off my speaking voice,...no nasal,...no nnnnnn's when practicing,..what i was told,..but the lessons u give are great....
OMG....I love your video! I have been outta practice a while and want to work on my head voice to hit higher notes...I love this!!!! Your a great teacher and explain things very well!
your singing lessons are very helpful. I don't know what I will do without you. :) Using all of your singing lessons really helped my voice. usually I have to try a little hard to get my voice the way I want it to be. Now I can sing with ease. Thank you!
WOW! This is really good! I love the last part most, because there you used the piano and you'r voice in a very special way! Thanks for your videos, they really help.
Hi there --I've been tuning in to your channel on and off --this past year --As I am also taking singing lessons--for a year now weekly... Today especially I got into this lesson---Thanks a lot --for the helpful tips and mini demonstrations ..5*****
base to what i heard is that for the boys.. head voice is the falsetto voice.. while the girls, its really their head voice.. i think the one he's using on this video is somewhat the belting voice i guess... the grumpy sound he uses in the exercises helps you to somewhat heat some high notes and you can use that for belting... just dont raise your head while doing this.. it will make your throat muscle become very tense.. i dont know bout you guys but this works for me...
Dude! i've never experienced my vocals improve so much after following you. what a great exercise. very practical and simple to follow. you did a superb job in demonstrating step by step. thanks..
I'm currently learning to play the guitar but my singing voice has never been very good. Your singing technique cd sounds like the best way for me to go. I'm looking forward to learning something new! All the best...Jon.
The order doesn't matter too much since both the series and this have warm-ups, but I would definitely do both as they work different aspects of the voice.
It sounds like you're referring to your falsetto which, you're right, is probably not preferable to use if you can help it. As you consistently practice vocalizing, especially in a way that reduces tension (as in this video), you'll find easier access to higher notes in your natural voice. This just takes some time...and you really have to be careful not to develop the habit of forcing notes out as that will be counterproductive in the long run. If it ever feels strained, relax!
You're very good. Back when I used to sing, I would listen to a song, and I could copy the voice. If the song was another language, my accent even changed. I hit the high notes fairly well, but I think if I'd had a teacher who was more like you and less like the one I had, maybe I'd still be singing now. I used to love it. Now . . . I don't know. Someday I may take it up again.
I love this vid. I have used a lot of different excersises and they all are very similar in technique. I found these to be somewhat different and could feel the note placement much better. Never felt I fully developed my head voice, feel like I'm trying to force my chest voice to reach the higher notes which forces a huge glottal attack to try and control the note which is actually counter-productive to control. my goal is to sing high "soft" notes. great stuff galt, i'm a subscriber.
glad i found this video :) thanks! i really needed this, because im singing a song next week at my school where there was a part in it that i was worried about cracking when i sing the high part. now i know to relax my voice a little more. thanks!
Wow, thank you so much! Like other people have said, I've also been out of practice for a while, but I just signed myself up to do a performance in a few months, and I thought it was going to take me forever to get my range back. Well, I'm sure I'm not yet as high as I was, but I think I got at least an octave or more out of this with good quality! Thanks so much! :)
Keep practicing, but don't push it. If it cracks or hurts, back off and don't go quite as high. As you practice with proper technique, you'll develop the access to the higher notes.
Most people generally have to switch, "voices" to hit higher notes. It's just a different range that you get by switching from your chest voice to your head voice; generally it sounds more babyish in younger people, but as you get older it will either stop sounding babyish and start just sounding high, or you will lose it completely.
Monsieur, thank you.... during the no no ih ih excercise, your chords are so beautiful asnd relaxing that I "forget" to be tense, qand thus I can reach high notes easier!!! MERCI!
Start playing an instrument other than your voice (I reckon that's an instrument too). I play both guitar and some piano and have done so for many years and by that I have developed my "musical ear" allowing me to hear very clear wether or not I hit the right notes (high or low) when singing. That has helped me alot when trying to learn how to sing.
wow this is amazing i dont have to go to a singing lesson because i can practice in my house because of this two thumbs up im a big fan now and at the same time im a student of yours already tnx.....
I am going to be listening and learning from your video for a long time. This was amazing. Have a great Night and I hope you have a fabulous New Year. God bless you and your family. Please share more.
Well teoretically speaking by using falsetto (head voice) you can reach notes close to or in excess of those sung by a Soprana or by Castrati. I myself am a baritone and can so far hit an A5 in my head voice and a D4 in chest voice. It all comes down to practicing , just sing scales with proper breathing and technique , the rest comes naturally. The vocal chords are muscles if you thinkg about it , they need exercise to become stronger.
It's called your "break", everyone has one and everyone hates it. You can't eliminate it but you can make the notes around more similar to make the transition smoother. Do some "siren wails" (up and down smooth scales) right around where you feel the change and soon it will fade and you will hardly notice a difference.
This video encourages me to try and reclaim what i've thought i've lost. I know i can sing and this video makes it a lot easier to understand, what i've been doing wrong. BTW - You really have a wonderful voice, but i can't feel any enthusiasm in Your video. (except in the end, which was just beautiful) With great hugs, a girl from far away...
@finalsojourn depends on what ur high c is, I assume your high c is tenor high c which is C5, so C above high c is C6. Of coz, it cant possibly be c above soprano c, which is C7. That note was a D6. a d above tenor C.
this is exercise is actually working to relax my vocal chords. Excellent! I was always wondering why i can sing higher notes (in the car) when i wake up in the morning, and then as the day goes by, my voice can't do it anymore. (in the car)
thank u so much! i have been practicing in my room everyday (when me parents aren't home ; ] ) to get to a high not and this video made me go up so high!!!! it was amazing, i couldn't believe it was my voice =D
Thank u very much, I'm waitin' for more videos. It's a little bit strange when we talk about syllables, because I don't speak english, so... It's a little bit different from what i'm used to.
God bless you brother this is awesome
It's harder up high but try to make sure the vocal chords get full closure - that's where the 'grumble' helps out.
We do this sort of thing for warm ups in my concert choir. It's fun. Especially when we go super high.
First soprano all the way! :)
Definitely! Your usable range will expand with regular practice and proper technique.
you have been a great help in my reaching a higher octave, i'm registering a higher octave than before. I've been following your exercise for a week now.

Yes, it will help you become a better singer - in control of your voice all around - so I'd recommend it for any genre, including metal.
Oh my gosh.. I have searched high and low and here YOU are!! I just discovered you and did the interactive plus this lesson. Thanks a million, will get the tape and practice daily!!!!
@bammer180and1 Yeah, it goes very high -- though guys and girls alike can hit the top notes by accessing whistle register
i have been practicing with your videos for more than 6 months now and i tell you sir. its has been such a huugee part of my singing experience .. i hear my family friends used to tell me to just give up singing. but lately they have been telling me that my voice got waay more better and i sound really good now and i feel so happy thanks to you. :D
for the whistle tones just diminuendo to pianissimo, and feel the note just gently 'shivering' at the back of your throat. Very relaxed.
not as a book, but I do have the lessons as a download (see the link in the sidebar).
Thanks!

Proves that I shouldn't be so sceptic about these lessons :)
In that case, I'd recommend my technique CDs. They go through the various vocal ranges so if you'd like to know what yours is- they will work handily.
hey, where can I find your CD?
@FlowerPowerMeisje Yeah, sounds like you've got it! Wind instruments are great for developing breath control.
I have to comment every time I use these. Best singing lessons ever. Almost as the real thing.
i've been singing only 2yrs,..i take lessons,..and truly consious off my speaking voice,...no nasal,...no nnnnnn's when practicing,..what i was told,..but the lessons u give are great....
loved the ending on the piano bit
thanks for the lesson!
The beauty (or not) of a voice is born, technical expertise is made.
Thanks! I'm happy to ship the CDs anywhere in the world.
OMG....I love your video! I have been outta practice a while and want to work on my head voice to hit higher notes...I love this!!!! Your a great teacher and explain things very well!
the tune in the last exercise is just beautiful
your singing lessons are very helpful. I don't know what I will do without you. :) Using all of your singing lessons really helped my voice. usually I have to try a little hard to get my voice the way I want it to be. Now I can sing with ease. Thank you!

I'm going to an audition today, and I've been using your vids to warm up with. Great stuff, thanks for posting!

OMG this is amazing! I went so high over my usual range! I was surprised I could go so high with out feeling strain. Thank you.
You remind me of my singing instructor. The way you teach is very similar. You have one of the best voice lessons I seen so far on youtube. =)
base to what i heard is that for the boys.. head voice is the falsetto voice.. while the girls, its really their head voice.. i think the one he's using on this video is somewhat the belting voice i guess... the grumpy sound he uses in the exercises helps you to somewhat heat some high notes and you can use that for belting... just dont raise your head while doing this.. it will make your throat muscle become very tense.. i dont know bout you guys but this works for me...

I'm currently learning to play the guitar but my singing voice has never been very good. Your singing technique cd sounds like the best way for me to go.

thanks for the new post. I've been practicing off of your 2CD set for over 2 months now ;-)
wow its so nice to find a free lessons here to achieve the high notes
This video is awesome. I had a lot of trouble doing it because I kept straining my voice and neck, but now i am doing much better thanks to you. :)
As you loosen up and become more comfortable on the high notes, the vibrato will come out more easily.
I love this vid. I have used a lot of different excersises and they all are very similar in technique. I found these to be somewhat different and could feel the note placement much better. It's a Yamaha P-90 (88 keys). I got it at Guitar Center :)
i've only done this for four or five days and my voice can already go higher than it ever has! thanks. :)
Yea ;] I've lots of new videos! There's a new one specifically on singing technique; if you go to my main channel, you should be able to find it.
glad i found this video :) thanks!
i really needed this, because im singing a song next week at my school where there was a part in it that i was worried about cracking when i sing the high part. now i know to relax my voice a little more. thanks!
the high notes tutorial i've ever seen, very very easy but at the same time very efffective!!!
@armansrsa In private lessons, I discuss all such things :)
Wow, thank you so much! Like other people have said, I've also been out of practice for a while, but I just signed myself up to do a performance in a few months, and I thought it was going to take me forever to get my range back. I can. Others can too. If you can't reach them yet, it's OK, just go as high as is comfortable for now :)
Best music lesson i ever had and probably will have.

i kan not wait to reseve your dvds lesson man u r good!!! should arrived within the next 3 or 4 days!!!
Thanks, I'm happy to help!
some people are just naturally gifted, but then you can always expand your range with practicing.
thanks for this man! i gotta do a gig this sat and im singing a high song as well as lead guitars this is helping alot thanks dude! :)
I am going to be listening and learning from your video for a long time. This was amazing. Have a great Night and I hope you have a fabulous New Year. God bless you and your family. Please share more.
@BonBonyta Glad to be a help :)

Ahh I missed this! Had to adjust my vocals and warmup with this too in choir! Thank you for this!
thanks a lot for this lesson,,,,I have a singing class,,,,but I was looking for more exercises to work on my head voice,,,thanks!
It's called your "break", everyone has one and everyone hates it. You can't eliminate it but you can make the notes around more similar to make the transition smoother. Do some "siren wails" (up and down smooth scales) right around where you feel the change and soon it will fade and you will hardly notice a difference.
thank you this really helps me warm up my voice although i cant go very high..still practicing!
Hey Shadow! I have plans for new ones...but for now my latest video is my song "Fallen on the Front Lines."
Thank you! it did work! my throat feels fine now and i'm hitting those high notes. Thank you so much, i really do appreciate it! :D
natural talent.. He just has amazing range which almost no one has
has this worked so far for anyone cuz this has taught me more than vocal ensemble in school!!!
This video encourages me to try and reclaim what i've thought i've lost.
I know i can sing and this video makes it a lot easier to understand, what i've been doing wrong.
BTW - You really have a wonderful voice, but i can't feel any enthusiasm in Your video. (except in the end, which was just beautiful)
With great hugs, a girl from far away...
thanks :) and yeah, England is no problem for shipping.
Your killin me dude. Great teacher.
That's a great idea. I'll send you a message to see what we can work out.
@Obsidix It could be a mixture of both newness and not warming up properly. I'd suggest a very efficient warm up and scale practice.
5:53 .... what a cute smile sbgalt ..loved your lesson it's very helpful
@finalsojourn
depends on what ur high c is, I assume your high c is tenor high c which is C5, so C above high c is C6. Of coz, it cant possibly be c above soprano c, which is C7.
That note was a D6. a d above tenor C.
@jhsnumba0 yes, thats why you use your diaphragm to sing. Its a muscle which pushes the sound out(air) instead of forcing your throat.
Thanks :) It's just something I improvised for this video
You're my new favorite person I needed to warm up but no piano =)
That's good ;]
Try transposing the melody up a 3rd and harmonizing; it'll train your ear and test your ability to sing even higher.
this is exercise is actually working to relax my vocal chords. Excellent! I was always wondering why i can sing higher notes (in the car) when i wake up in the morning, and then as the day goes by, my voice can't do it anymore. (in the car)
@Obsidix I just joined chorus too. I reccomend practicing a lot. But, it's also being new to singing. Just work on it. :)
It's just a local singing comp. Nothing major, but there are going to be some pretty good singers in it so I want to be on point.
;] you're most welcome Jas!
thank u so much! i have been practicing in my room everyday (when me parents aren't home ; ] ) to get to a high not and this video made me go up so high!!!! it was amazing, i couldn't believe it was my voice =D
Dunno why this video is on my recommend list but worth it
Thank u very much,
I'm waitin' for more videos.
It's a little bit strange when we talk about syllables, because I don't speak english, so... It's a little bit different from what i'm used to.
