I love Elder Petersen. He was the first General Authority I met as a new convert to the Church in the summer of 1980. This message could be appropriately be given to us today as we are in the same predicament.

Excellent comment. I think we need a wake up call and absolutely decide which team we are on and stop straddling the fence. Mark E. Peterson came to visit my mission in Australia in the 1970’s. Great man. Great apostle. Great disciple of Christ.

I remember hearing talks like this one in my youth. Apostles of Jesus Christ quoting former United States presidents/polticians/authors calling then by name. Yet, not saying the name of the Book of Mormon prophets quoted near the end of his talk, like Nephi, or quoting few scriptures. The voices seemed loud and harsh. It was a critical, perilous time in the world--1960-70's. I lived it. I do love Mark E. Peterson's book, The Great Prologue. There were strong political divisions among the brethren. Such a different flavor and fervor. I recall people being critical of Benson being sustained as the President, saying I hope he's not political. Is "The Constitution a Heavenly Banner," or "Stand up for Freedom" political? Maybe we needed to be political to correct the course. Maybe that's why he said, we as a church are under condemnation for not reading and studying The Book of Mormon, which parallels our day and points out the enemies of Christ.

Without a doubt, the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon-which our Savior Jesus Christ personally reviewed when He visited the Nephites to ensure its completeness and accuracy-invite all believers in Jesus Christ to stand against evil. Today, politics has largely replaced religion, and this shift was deliberate. Ezra Taft Benson, having worked in politics, recognized the warning signs and urged everyone to study the Book of Mormon. Why? Because the ancient record contains the formula for overcoming the evils we face today, which are embodied in modern politics. This challenge must be met by faithful saints, as the Book of Mormon invites us to do.
The Church continues to face condemnation for forgetting the New and Everlasting Covenant, as outlined in the Book of Mormon. Despite the Book of Mormon being a second witness of Jesus Christ, this has not been enough to lift this condemnation. So, what exactly have we missed? I believe Ezra Taft Benson tirelessly sought to help us find the answer. - Watch the Video That Explores This Often Overlooked Purpose of the Book of Mormon - ruclips.net/video/jVm8HlBvgKE/видео.html

This was 56 years ago... and look where we are today. So much of our once great nation has gone completely and exactly the wrong way - away from God.
Were it not for the righteous people who still do turn to God, we would be totally screwed!

By turning to God and becoming spiritual one first needs to repent of one sins and of wicked ways . Once those things are idenified .......can people do it ? Yes ... will the nation do it ... probably not without a horrible financial greater depression and a nucear war 3.

Supporting a man who has broken all of God's commandments and doesn't feel he must repent, is surely the wrong person to be the President!

It’s crucial that we, as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, carefully consider the character and actions of any leader we support, especially in relation to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
We are taught in Matthew 7:20, "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." This principle invites us to evaluate leaders by their actions and the results of their leadership. If a person or political party promotes practices that are fundamentally opposed to the teachings of Christ-such as undermining the sanctity of life, family values, or religious freedom-we need to seriously consider whether they align with our values as disciples of Christ.
Doctrine and Covenants 98:10 further emphasizes the importance of supporting leaders who demonstrate honesty, wisdom, and goodness: "Wherefore, honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold." This scripture reminds us of our responsibility to choose leaders who uphold righteous principles.
Moreover, freedom and the rights of the people are paramount. Policies that protect and promote these principles should be sought above all. If a party or person has a track record of defending freedom and the rights of individuals, they should be given serious consideration when casting your vote.
If the current political landscape presents limited options that reflect our beliefs, it may be a call for more faithful individuals to step forward and run for political office. We need leaders who will uphold and promote principles that align with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Ultimately, our choices should be made after careful consideration, prayer, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Ghost. We must evaluate the fruits of those we support and remain open to the possibility that more faithful voices may be needed in the political arena. Our decisions matter greatly, and they should be made with a focus on upholding the principles of the gospel, promoting the well-being of all God's children, and safeguarding the freedoms that allow us to live our faith fully.
