I've been falling asleep to your podcasts since last summer, when I first stumbled across one of your vids after going on a youtube search on some philosopher in order to save up time instead of reading about him. This channel is like a secret treasure no one knows about - like the Fight Club, but for intellectuals. 😎
It's fake philosophy if you want money for it, unless you do as Diogenes of Sinope did: he in principle said straight to people's faces that they were idiots following the conventions of society, which gave him the moral right to beg for his living. Schopenhauer had his books printed at his own expense and he was a philosophy docent fluent in 7 languages and a genius at expressing himself in all of them.
I think it was Wittgenstein who said, something like: "There is no way for the fly to get out of the fly bottle, so just forget about it." Something like that...
I had a friend who was deep into Gurdjieff. I used to say "goatcheese" He, like most gurus, was in it for the chicks. It's so obvious. It's like the redheaded guy running sperm bank. All the kids have red hair. What's going on here?
I guess my view on meditation is I personally stop doing it. I think I need to read to look at the neurological literature and form a consensus on its utility. I read somewhere that meditation activates certain parts of the mind, and lowers other aspects. I think fundamentally, for me at least reading and building a system, helps me at least more than meditation. Things like detachment, from emotionally evasive narratives, using reason for a reason to deconstruct overly theatrical narratives, and developing a sense of openness. I have a multitude of intellectual strategies, for me growing roots, and being a cynic, works for me. My belief is a shelter, to form structure, security, detachment, openness, routine, so in a way, I'm playing it safe. I personally don't believe in a one shoe fits all approach.
Salvation is transcendence of self through an understanding of the nature of existence. For Spinoza this is intellectual and not as one might interpret it in eastern traditions.
Been listening daily since 2018. What will our Corporeal Fantasy Podcaster say when hallucinogenic drugs revolutionize the field psychiatric treatment? Perhaps none of us will be around to see it but that day will come. To compare it to some obvious manifestation of our animal instinct isn't quite right. However, Martin is spot on 99% of the time. Can't deny that.
This is one of my favorite videos of yours. I know you reluctantly use the terms higher and lower. But, I like the use of these terms, because I have read some Schopenhauer, and at present anyway, I am more influenced by the dualist Schopenhauerian way of looking at life. I appreciate the remark you made about tantric sex. I thought perhaps I just didn't understand how such a thing could be elevated to the holy. Your remarks are clarifying.
Regarding your priest friend at the 2:00 minute mark: 1 Timothy 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the *husband* of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 1 Timothy 2:11-13 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I *suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man,* but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and *one mediator between God and men,* the man Christ Jesus; 1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, *a royal priesthood,* an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Suffice to say, me thinks your priest friend has imagined something. Firstly, she is not a he. Secondly, she is not a mediator between God and Men: Jesus Christ is our high priest, and _all_ believers are priests, who have direct access to God (see Hebrews 10:19-22). The scriptures are supposed to be the standard that the Christian must adhere to, to _avoid_ imagining God. In the old testament, God was jealous of his image (because his _true_ image, Jesus Christ, would later come to earth), and was constantly reproving his people for creating idols that they thought represented God. (see Exodus 32) Our hearts, as John Calvin said, are constant idol factories. We make idols of ourselves every waking moment. Think about your thought life, how you puff yourself up in conversations you entertain in your mind, how you replay conversations that didn't go so well, in order to carve out the imperfections. Then when we're satisfied with our little idol of ourselves, we protectively carry it with us to the next day: and when someone tries to smash our idol, we are ever so defensive of it, even if it's not truly us. The only reason why you are not a depressed mess, drowning in the waters of sorrow, is because you stay afloat by puffing yourself up. This is just one aspect of sin, of which we are already condemned for, for death is the wages of sin; and which we will be judged for on the day of judgement. Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

I just stumbled upon this. Nice hearing from you again and seeing your face. Great wisdom as always.
How wonderful. I envy your ability to map out these texts into actual, really experienced life.
Emotional content, explains why Dr Phil and Jerry Springer and Jeremy Kyle are so successful.
I'm kinda sad that all the old videos are gone :(
It's on his patreon channel.
Thanks for sharing your work Martin
Every video should start with
"Dunno if it's wise or not"
Otherwise it's fake philosophy

@@francisdec1615 ah well
I love laughing with you Martin.
Yes, of course, usefulness, or "fitness value", in the more modern vernacular, always trumps "truth". Whatever that may be, "truth" that is.
Looking forward to the continuation of Spinoza's ontology, Martin. Also interested in any sort of 'anti-natalist' style video.

What happened to the rest of your videos sir
Awesome, I have the princeton version and the penguin version of The Ethics. Which would you recommend?
Thanks so much!

Interesting, what is meaning of “ love for something higher” from this video??
What does Spinoza mean by Salvation? Unity of mind and nature? In other words, complete awareness and acceptance of nature?
Salvation is transcendence of self through an understanding of the nature of existence. For Spinoza this is intellectual and not as one might interpret it in eastern traditions.

How many other videos do you have archived?
About 400
